All is Vanity
Lessons from Solomon

“Vanity
of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.
What profit hath a man of all his labour which he taketh under the sun?” Ecclesiastes 1:2
Although King Solomon was a wise administrator, many of his
actions proved quite foolish.
He married hundreds of heathen wives who turned his heart away
from the Lord.
However, as we look through the book of Ecclesiastes which was
most likely written in Solomon’s later life, we can learn a whole lot from his
reflections as he looked back on his life.
Remember the famous words from Ecclesiastes
1:2-4? “Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities;
all is vanity. What profit hath a man of all his labour which he
taketh under the sun? One generation passeth away, and another generation
cometh: but the earth abideth for ever.”
The tone here is clearly a frustrating one.
Just like in Ecclesiastes 2:18,19: “Yea,
I hated all my labour which I had taken under the sun: because I should leave
it unto the man that shall be after me. And who knoweth whether he shall be a
wise man or a fool? yet shall he have rule over all my labour wherein
I have laboured, and wherein I have shewed myself wise under the sun.
This is also vanity.”
There is a credible lesson here for people who spend all their
time and energy pursuing money at the expense of their family, health and
relationship with God.
You aren’t going to take your possessions with you when you
leave this earth.
If all you care about is possessions, then you are to be pitied
because life is not a good rewarder. Hard work is good. Money is good. But
money is not everything.
You must learn to put your treasure where neither moth nor death
can destroy.
You must invest even more in the cause of the gospel than
anything else. You must rank eternity higher than possessions. Because just as
Solomon teaches us, everything you own or will own is vanity.
