REGENERATING RIBS - Adam and that ‘missing’ rib - The periosteum contains cells that can manufacture new bone. Particularly in young people, ‘rib periosteum has a remarkable ability to regenerate bone, perhaps more so than any other bone’. Thoracic (chest) surgeons routinely remove ribs, and these often grow back, in whole or in part. A lot depends on the care with which the rib is removed; it needs to be ‘peeled’ out of its periosteum to leave this membrane as intact as possible. A major reason why the rib is the ideal situation for such regeneration is that the attached intercostal muscles provide it with a good blood supply. A head-on impact with a fully laden fuel tanker at highway speeds is an experience I would hope for none to share. The surprise was to have survived it — God clearly had other plans for me. During the 5½ months in hospital, and for years afterwards, I had a series of operations to reconstruct various parts of me, particularly the bones of my face. These operations often required using my own bone for grafting. I noticed that the plastic surgeon would keep going back to the right side of my ribcage, through the same horizontal scar, actually, to get more bone for these procedures. One day, I asked him why he hadn’t ‘run out of bone’. He looked at me blankly, and then explained that he and his team took the whole rib out, each time. ‘We leave the periosteum intact, so the rib usually just grows right back again’.

Despite having trained and practised as a family doctor, I was intrigued; I had never realised this before.

The periosteum (the literal meaning of this word is ‘around the bone’) is a membrane that covers every bone — it’s the reason you can get things stuck between your teeth while gnawing on a leg of lamb, for instance.

The periosteum contains cells that can manufacture new bone.

When the surgeon originally told me this, my immediate thought was — ‘Wow, that’s really neat, Adam didn’t have to walk around with a defect!’

In Genesis 2:21, referring to the creation of Eve, we read:

‘And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept. And He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh underneath.’

Surprisingly, some Christians have grown up believing that men have one less rib than women.

They have the same number, of course.

Some anti-creationists have used the fact that men don’t have any missing ribs today to mock a literal Genesis.

For years before my accident, when asked about this, I would give a reply something like this: ‘If your father had lost his finger in a circular saw, would you really expect all his children to have one less finger, too?

‘Or all of his sons, but not his daughters? Of course not. The DNA instructions that are passed on from parent to child are in the form of a code, like writing — removing a rib (or finger) would not change the instructions on the code, so all the offspring will have all their ribs (or fingers).’

While all that is still very true and pertinent, this information about rib regrowth adds a new and fascinating dimension.

God designed the rib, along with the periosteum. He would certainly have known how to remove the rib in such a way that it would later grow back, just as ribs still do today — without requiring any sort of special miracle.

Adam would not have had any permanent area of weakness in his rib cage, but would have had, for all of the hundreds of years of his life, the same number of ribs that you and I have today.

After 41 years of activity and prominence in the creation movement, the last 28 of them as the fulltime Managing Director of the ministry that eventually became Creation Ministries International in Brisbane, Australia, Dr Carl Wieland commenced a well-earned retirement from active creation ministry in early 2015.

His successor as Managing Director of CMI-Australia, head scientist Dr Don Batten, said at the time, “These are big shoes to fill, but one of the hallmarks of Dr Wieland’s decades of exemplary service was a commitment to making sure that CMI did not focus on individuals, personalities or ‘name recognition’, but rather on a team approach. One of his enduring legacies is the calibre of the CMI team that he helped to build. This consists of many talented and committed individuals worldwide in various roles, with younger scientists and speakers due to come on board in coming years, in more than one country in which CMI operates. This longstanding ethos will stand the ministry in good stead in both the medium and long-term future.”

BIBLICAL MYTHS? - Commemoration of the Exodus was primarily intended for Israel. They had fallen into cruel slavery in Egypt, yet had been delivered and molded into a great nation. Many Israelis and evangelicals deny this event actually took place. God had told them to remember, but many have forgotten. As with the Exodus, most Christian leaders today do not believe creation took place as Scripture records, and feel that they must twist or supplement or ignore the plain sense of revealed history. Throughout the Old Testament, God often reminded His children to remember His mighty acts on their behalf. Sometimes visible memorials were set up to facilitate their recall, such as the pile of stones taken from the middle of the Jordan River when God held back the waters to allow them to enter the Promised Land. This extraordinary event really happened, and God desired them to remember it forever. He based important commands on true events. But there were two greater events in history that God most often used as an impetus to praise, faith, and trust. These He expressly wanted us to remember. God had told them to remember, but many have forgotten. Only true events can be remembered. If God has based His commands on myth then they are not to be obeyed either. The time has come for Christian leaders to "remember" that they serve a God of truth.

"remember. . ."

Throughout the Old Testament, God often reminded His children to remember His mighty acts on their behalf.
Sometimes visible memorials were set up to facilitate their recall, such as the pile of stones taken from the middle of the Jordan River when God held back the waters to allow them to enter the Promised Land (Joshua 4:6).
Evidence of the Exodus? - Watch JerusalemThis extraordinary event really happened, and God desired them to remember it forever.
He based important commands on true events, not myths.
But there were two greater events in history that God most often used as an impetus to praise, faith, and trust. These He expressly wanted us to remember.
Commemoration of the Exodus was primarily intended for Israel, His chosen people.
They had fallen into cruel slavery in Egypt, yet had been delivered and molded into a great nation.
Often they were told: "Remember that thou wast a servant in the land of Egypt, and that the Lord thy God brought thee out thence through a mighty hand and by a stretched out arm" (Deuteronomy 5:15).
Unfortunately, many scholars today -- even Israelis and evangelicals -- deny this event actually took place.
Beyond the Sunday School - A Bible Blog by Jacob Cherian: Exodus 14 - 18The seeming disharmony of biblical history with secular Egyptian chronology as established by archaeology causes most scholars to fully discount Scripture.
At a recent archaeological convention, Jewish lecturers taught that the nation of Israel has no recorded history.
Attendees rightly asked, "If the Exodus isn't history, then who are we? What right do we have to exist?"
God had told them to remember, but many have forgotten.
Here's the dilemma. If the Exodus and Israeli history are mythological, how can they be remembered?
Bible is wrong: One mistranslation completely changes a Book of Exodus story | Weird | News | Express.co.ukOnly true events can be remembered. If God has based His commands on myth -- which are not to be taken as literal truth -- then evidently, they are not to be obeyed either.
Even many evangelical seminary professors, to their shame and the detriment of the church, teach that the Exodus did not actually take place as Scripture records, that it was allegorical at best.
Mainline denominations have long denied Israel's identity. Must literalists join them?
The second primary "remembrance" of Scripture involves creation.
Inscribed in stone, the fourth commandment reads "Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy… For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day" (Exodus 20:8, 11).
All of creation was commanded to set aside this day to remember.
Yet as a people and church we have forgotten, in direct disobedience to the Creator's command.
Revealed: The Exodus ;Facts that leave you questioning the exodus – Amaanbali's BlogAs with the Exodus, most Christian leaders today do not believe creation took place as Scripture records, and feel that they must twist or supplement or ignore the plain sense of revealed history.
Most leading evangelical seminaries today teach The Framework Hypothesis, which holds that Genesis only vaguely implies God's involvement and contains no true history.
Such teachers cannot rightly obey the fourth commandment for they consider the creation account to be merely figurative, and you can't "remember" an indefinite event.
The time has come for Christian leaders to "remember" that they serve a God of truth Who acted in true history, and not a mythological god of fantasy.

THE YOUNG EARTH - The Bible indicates that the creation of all things was accomplished in a six-day period just a few thousand years ago. The earth was created on Day One while the sun, moon, and stars were created on Day Four - since thousands is less than billions, the term "Young Earth" has come to describe the recent creation position - According to the mainstream Big Bang idea, our universe abruptly sprang into existence some 15 billion years ago, sending matter careening through space. After millions of years it had cooled enough to coalesce into billions of rotating proto galactic-discs, and much later into stars. Over the billions of years, some stars underwent super nova, spewing material back into space, which later coalesced into second generation stars, some of which likewise exploded, leading to third generation stars like our sun. The planets are comprised of left-over star dust which didn't fall into the sun. Even though our earth and its solar system is thought to be about 4.6 billion years old, it is much younger than the first and second generation stars, the galaxies, and sub-atomic particles shooting everywhere through space. Indeed, hardly anything is younger than earth. Conversely, the Bible indicates that the creation of all things was accomplished in a six-day period just a few thousand years ago. The earth was created on Day One while the sun, moon, and stars were created on Day Four. Only by comparing a few thousand years with over four billion years as the age of the earth we rationalize the idea that the earth is "young."

Arlo Moehlenpah – A Young Earth – Welcome to IBC PerspectivesThe earth was created on Day One while the sun, moon, and stars were created on Day Four.
Since thousands is less than billions, the term "Young Earth" has come to describe the recent creation position.
At a recent seminar, my friend, Mr. Tom Godfrey challenged me on the use of the term "Young Earth" for the following reasons:
First, according to our creationist perspective, nothing in all of creation is older than the earth, because it was created "in the beginning" (Genesis 1:1).
Consequently, if the earth is young, then everything else is as young or even younger.
According to the Big Bang idea, the universe itself is much older than the earth, so in their model the earth could be considered young in comparison.
So for them, the descriptor has real meaning.
How is BioLogos different from Evolutionism, Intelligent Design, and Creationism? - Common-questions - BioLogosOnly by comparing a few thousand years with over four billion years as the age of the earth in two distinct perspectives can we rationalize the idea that the earth is "young."
The validity of the term depends entirely on the existence of the two perspectives, both of which are assumed to be viable.
Second, consider a "new" building. Can we also call it a "young" building?
I do not think so.
A building can be old, but it cannot be young.
We reserve the term young for things that are alive and growing toward maturity.
Inanimate objects do not qualify, because they are at their best and full sized when first constructed.
So what term would be more appropriate than young?
Terms like new and recent avoid the second problem, but not the first.
If the earth is new, what can be old? What came into existence less recently from our perspective?
The creation of the earth is the least recent event in history.
A dilemma indeed.
I am not proposing we drop the terms young earth and old earth, for they are descriptive and well established.
Tom suggests we call ourselves "historic-earth creationists," not only because it is accurate, but it acknowledges the true history of Scripture.
Meanwhile, considering the term helps reinforce an important truth.
