HOW DOES GOD SPEAK TO US? - God speaks. Unlike the idols of the nations, which can neither hear nor speak, Israel’s God is the one who spoke to the patriarchs, spoke from the mountain and spoke through the prophets. In fact, the overarching narrative of the Bible begins and ends with God speaking. God’s words are powerful and effective, the agency by which he accomplishes his purposes. Against this background, it is not at all surprising that Jesus is described as “the Word.” As the eternal Son of God, he is the perfect expression of God’s character and purpose. It is highly significant that the words God speaks are addressed to men and women created in his image. God has no difficulty in communicating effectively with his creatures in a verbal way. The words he uses are human words. They can be understood by those to whom they are addressed. They are meant to be heard and heeded. His word stands judge over all human words. It bears God’s own authority. - One of the most fundamental characteristics of the God who created all things and who has definitively made himself known in Jesus Christ is that he speaks. God speaks. But how does God speak to us? “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son.” In fact, the overarching narrative of the Bible begins and ends with God speaking.

One of the most fundamental characteristics of the God who created all things and who has definitively made himself known in Jesus Christ is that he speaks.

God speaks.

But how does God speak to us?

“In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son.” — Hebrews 1:1–2

IDOLS DON’T SPEAK

Unlike the idols of the nations, which can neither hear nor speak, Israel’s God is the one

o    who spoke to the patriarchs (Genesis 12:1; 26:2; 31:3),

o    spoke from the mountain (Deuteronomy 4:12), and

o    spoke through the prophets (Daniel 9:6; Hosea 12:10; Jeremiah 10:5).

In fact, the overarching narrative of the Bible begins and ends with God speaking (Genesis 1:1–3; Revelation 21:5–8).

God’s words are powerful and effective, the agency by which he accomplishes his purposes (Isaiah 55:10–11; cf. Hebrews 4:12).

JESUS IS “THE WORD”

Against this background, it is not at all surprising that Jesus is described as “the Word” (John 1:1–18; 1 John 1:1–4).

As the eternal Son of God, he is the perfect expression of God’s character and purpose.

The writer to the Hebrews sums up God’s involvement in human history in a way that highlights his use of words: “In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son” (Hebrews 1:1–2).

It is highly significant that the words God speaks are addressed to men and women created in his image.

God has no difficulty in communicating effectively with his creatures in a verbal way.

The words he uses are human words. They can be understood by those to whom they are addressed. They are meant to be heard and heeded.

COMMUNICATING WITH GOD & ONE ANOTHER

Even the multiplication of languages after the Babel incident poses no obstacle to God’s effective communication.

Nevertheless, even in the Garden of Eden it proved possible for creatures to twist God’s words and resist their claim on our thoughts and wills.

Indeed, a refusal to let the words God has spoken shape our response to him and every aspect of life in his world is the essence of human sin (Genesis 3; Hebrews 3:7–19).

Whereas every human word must be tested because we know that we can all miscommunicate or mislead or perhaps both at the same time, God’s word stands firm as the good gift of a generous heavenly Father who wants us to know him, what he has done and what he is yet to do.

He wants us to learn from him how we should respond to him (Deuteronomy 12:29–32; John 4:19–26).

His word stands judge over all human words. It bears God’s own authority.

Only by seriously attending to these words will we become “wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus” (2 Timothy 3:15).

GOD IS JEALOUS - The Lord God is often named by His character qualities. He is the “King of Kings,” “Deliverer,” “Provider,” “Healer,” and “Redeemer”; the list goes on and on. Yet of all the names of God, there is one that seems out of place. Exodus 34:14 reads, “Do not worship any other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.” God is jealous for your heart, not because He is petty or insecure, but because He loves you. The reason why God has such a huge problem with idolatry is that His love for you is all-consuming. He loves you too much to share you… “You shall not make for yourself an [idol] in the form of anything… You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God.” — In Scripture, the Lord God is often named by His character qualities. God Is Jealous. Is That Good?

The reason why God has such a huge problem with idolatry is that His love for you is all-consuming. He loves you too much to share you…

.

The Lord God is often named by His character qualities. He is the “King of Kings,” “Deliverer,” “Provider,” “Healer,” and “Redeemer”; the list goes on and on. Yet of all the names of God, there is one that seems out of place. Exodus 34:14 reads, “Do not worship any other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.”

Kyle Idleman

“You shall not make for yourself an [idol] in the form of anything… You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God.” — Exodus 20:4-5

Wouldn’t it be interesting if people were not only called by their given names but also by their most dominant personality traits?

Wives, what would your husband’s name be?

Maybe something complimentary like sweet-talker or strong protector. Or maybe it would be something a little less complimentary.

In Scripture, the Lord God is often named by His character qualities.

He is the “King of Kings,” “Deliverer,” “Provider,” “Healer,” and “Redeemer”; the list goes on and on.

Yet of all the names of God, there is one that seems out of place.

Exodus 34:14 reads,

“Do not worship any other god, for the Lord, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.”

Jealous?

That word doesn’t seem very… well, positive.

It feels petty to me — like a couple of junior high girls who are both interested in the same boy; like a basketball player who avoids passing the ball to the teammate who keeps getting the high score; like a possessive high school boyfriend who becomes upset if his girlfriend makes eye contact with another guy.

Besides, what reason would God have to be jealous?

Doesn’t everything already belong to Him?

Is there anything that competes with His power or his greatness?

Of course not — at least not in reality. But what about in your heart?

God is jealous for your heart, not because He is petty or insecure, but because He loves you.

The reason why God has such a huge problem with idolatry is that His love for you is all-consuming. He loves you too much to share you…

And here’s what is said of God:

“For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.” — Deuteronomy 4:24

In the Bible, the words jealous and zealous are basically interchangeable — it’s the same Hebrew word in the original texts.

In English, we spell the two almost the same because they derive from the same Greek root.

We think of zeal as being intense enthusiasm.

That idea captures why God is so possessive about us: He is, as He says, a consuming fire of passion for us.

Do you remember falling deeply in love — how you burned with a deep passion for the love of someone, how you were consumed with these feelings?

That was only the barest shadow of the power of God’s love for you.

We need to remember, as we talk about God’s intolerance of idolatry, that everything comes back to a passionate love that is so immense, so powerful, that it burns hotter than a billion suns.

Your Turn

Has God’s title or label of “Jealous” been confusing to you?

How do you respond to the understanding that His jealousy is actually His zeal, His love, His burning passion for you?
