MULTIPLYING YOUR LITTLE BIT OF OIL - God often uses something we have in order to give us something we need. You may be tempted to think you have “nothing” to give the Lord today. But don’t forget about that little jar of oil! It could become the surprising key to your breakthrough. No matter what difficult situation you may be facing today, your miracle begins as you give God what you already have, believing Him to give you what you still need. He can transform your empty vessels into overflowing abundance - Second Kings, chapter four, tells the remarkable story of a woman who serves as a model for us on how to receive the supernatural provision of God. The woman’s husband had died and left her in debt as a single parent. Things were so bad that her husband’s creditor was coming after her, planning to take her two sons as his slaves. Thankfully, the prophet Elisha got involved in her situation. Knowing that God often uses something we have in order to give us something we need, the prophet asked her what resources she had on hand. Her reply is very interesting: “Your maidservant has nothing in the house but a jar of oil.” Like this distraught woman, you may be tempted to think you have “nothing” to give the Lord today. But don’t forget about that little jar of oil! It could become the surprising key to your breakthrough. Knowing that God wanted to turn things around for the widow, Elisha gave her instructions on how to get unstuck from her distressing circumstances.

Second Kings, chapter four, tells the remarkable story of a woman who serves as a model for us on how to receive the supernatural provision of God.

Tragically, the woman’s husband had died and left her in debt as a single parent. Things were so bad that her husband’s creditor was coming after her, planning to take her two sons as his slaves.

Thankfully, the prophet Elisha got involved in her situation.

Knowing that God often uses something we have in order to give us something we need, the prophet asked her what resources she had on hand.

Her reply is very interesting: “Your maidservant has nothing in the house but a jar of oil” (verse 2).

Like this distraught woman, you may be tempted to think you have “nothing” to give the Lord today. But don’t forget about that little jar of oil! It could become the surprising key to your breakthrough.

Knowing that God wanted to turn things around for the widow, Elisha gave her instructions on how to get unstuck from her distressing circumstances.

In obedience, she went into her community and gathered all the empty vessels she could find from her neighbors.

Then she took her little bit of oil and started pouring it into the empty vessels.

The Bible says she poured and poured, and the oil didn’t stop until she ran out of vessels.

When she sold the numerous vessels of oil, she was able to pay off all her debts. She even had money left over to retire!

If you learn the lessons from this widow’s story, you can receive God’s supernatural provision in a similar way.

No matter what difficult situation you may be facing today, your miracle begins as you give God what you already have, believing Him to give you what you still need.

He can transform your empty vessels into overflowing abundance!

GOD CAN RESTORE EVERYTHING - When premature death hits, when the famine strikes, when the storm comes... none of this can ultimately snatch us out of God’s hand or remove us from His care. In His good time, He can turn the death into life, bring abundance in the midst of famine, and restore everything we have ever lost. There is nothing too hard for Him, no obstacle too large to overcome, nothing impossible. As we continue to put our trust in Him, we will find that God can and will restore to us everything we have lost... and then, He’ll give us more. - The Shunammite along with her husband built a room in their home for the prophet Elijah. And, in order to repay their kindness, Elijah told the childless couple that they would have a son. This obviously delighted the woman, but it was clear that she didn’t want to get her hopes up. What I really loved about her, though, was what she did when her son died of a head injury several years later. The woman was upset that Elijah hadn’t left well enough alone. After so many childless years, the woman had learned to live without children. But to have one unexpectedly given to her... only to have him taken away... seemed cruel to her. Sometime after her son was resurrected, Elisha told the woman to take her family and live somewhere else because God had shown him that a severe famine would hit the land, and it would last for seven years. So, the woman took her family and moved to the land of the Philistines for seven years.

2 Kings 8

Since I didn’t end up commenting on her in chapter 4, I’m glad the Shunammite woman is back again.

You remember her: She was the gal who (along with her husband) built a room in their home for the prophet Elijah.

And, in order to repay their kindness, Elijah told the childless couple that they would have a son.

This obviously delighted the woman, but it was clear that she didn’t want to get her hopes up.

What I really loved about her, though, was what she did when her son died of a head injury several years later.

The woman went immediately to Elijah and said, "Did I ask you for a son, my lord? Didn’t I tell you, 'Don’t raise my hopes?'" (2 Kings 4:28)

In other words, the woman was upset that Elijah hadn’t left well enough alone.

After so many childless years, the woman had learned to live without children. But to have one unexpectedly given to her... only to have him taken away... seemed cruel to her.

In chapter 8, we learn — as Paul Harvey would have said — the rest of the story.

Sometime after her son was resurrected, Elisha told the woman to take her family and live somewhere else because God had shown him that a severe famine would hit the land, and it would last for seven years.

So, the woman took her family and moved to the land of the Philistines for seven years.

When she came back, she found that her family’s land had fallen into the hands of someone else, so she went to the king to see if she could get it back.

Not only did she get it back, but the king also decreed that she should receive "all the income from her land from the day she left the country until now." (verse 6)

Wow! What an incredible life’s journey this woman had lived with God! He worked a miracle to give her a son — to bring life where it seemed impossible.

Then, He worked another miracle to restore the life after it had been snuffed out.

Next, she experienced God’s intervention and sustaining grace in a time of severe famine. God provided a way of escape for her and her family when things were difficult.

And finally, God was merciful in restoring her property, possessions, and fortune.

Did you know that God can restore everything?

When premature death hits, when the famine strikes, when the storm comes... none of this can ultimately snatch us out of God’s hand or remove us from His care.

In His good time, He can turn the death into life, bring abundance in the midst of famine, and restore everything we have ever lost.

There is nothing too hard for Him, no obstacle too large to overcome, nothing impossible.

As we continue to put our trust in Him, we will find — as did the Shunammite woman — that God can and will restore to us everything we have lost... and then, He’ll give us more.

In the fall of 2007, my father was diagnosed with ALS. One day, shortly after, I asked him if he was scared. He didn't even hesitate; he looked right at me and said, "Kelley, God knows what He's doing."

God knows what He's doing.

My memory of that day ends with those words. But it wasn't long before I came to realize that they had not been spoken by accident. My father wasn't summoning some sort of faith-courage to help him weather the worst storm he'd ever faced. He was simply speaking out of the depths of an intimate friendship with God that had spanned decades.

There is a God. And He knows what He's doing.

The problem is, most of us don't really know Him at all. God is the most-talked-about, least-intimately-known Person of our time. Consequently, because we don't really know Him, we don't really know if we can trust Him. It's my mission to change that for as many people as possible, one person at a time.

2 Kings 8 English Standard Version

The Shunammite's Land Restored

8 Now Elisha had said to the woman whose son he had restored to life, “Arise, and depart with your household, and sojourn wherever you can, for the Lord has called for a famine, and it will come upon the land for seven years.” 2 So the woman arose and did according to the word of the man of God. She went with her household and sojourned in the land of the Philistines seven years. 3 And at the end of the seven years, when the woman returned from the land of the Philistines, she went to appeal to the king for her house and her land. 4 Now the king was talking with Gehazi the servant of the man of God, saying, “Tell me all the great things that Elisha has done.” 5 And while he was telling the king how Elisha had restored the dead to life, behold, the woman whose son he had restored to life appealed to the king for her house and her land. And Gehazi said, “My lord, O king, here is the woman, and here is her son whom Elisha restored to life.” 6 And when the king asked the woman, she told him. So the king appointed an official for her, saying, “Restore all that was hers, together with all the produce of the fields from the day that she left the land until now.”

THE POWER THAT WORKS IN US - Ephesians 3:20 - God is the source of our power - unlimited ability to supply all the power we need in order to manifest a superior spiritual quality of life. “Can do” communicates that nothing is too hard, no matter how big or tough the mission is. Our God is a can-do God! Anything that God has promised, He is able to perform, and He has given us hundreds of promises in His Word to claim. God wants us to clearly perceive the exceeding magnitude and excellence of the power He can exert for those of us who believe. He demonstrated this power when He raised Jesus Christ from the dead and placed him in a position of excellence far above any other power. As we reach out to others with God’s prevailing Word, we sometimes encounter challenges that seem overwhelming. We may wonder whether we can bring the same kind of deliverance to these situations that Jesus Christ was able to bring to those he encountered. At times like these, we must go to God’s Word to get the strength and encouragement we need. Ephesians 3:20 is a tremendous go-to verse in these situations. “Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.” This verse explodes with power and abundance! Strengthened with these truths, we can put our believing into action as we see it big, dare to do, and walk valiantly for God.

The Power That Works in Us

Ephesians 3:20

God is the source of our power - unlimited ability to supply all the power we need in order to manifest a superior spiritual quality of life

.

“Can do” communicates that nothing is too hard, no matter how big or tough the mission is. Our God is a can-do God! Anything that God has promised, He is able to perform, and He has given us hundreds of promises in His Word to claim.

.

God wants us to clearly perceive the exceeding magnitude and excellence of the power He can exert for those of us who believe. He demonstrated this power when He raised Jesus Christ from the dead and placed him in a position of excellence far above any other power.

The Way Magazine

As we reach out to others with God’s prevailing Word, we sometimes encounter challenges that seem overwhelming.

We may wonder whether we can bring the same kind of deliverance to these situations that Jesus Christ was able to bring to those he encountered.

At times like these, we must go to God’s Word to get the strength and encouragement we need.

Ephesians 3:20 is a tremendous go-to verse in these situations.

“Now unto him that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that worketh in us.” - Ephesians 3:20:

This verse explodes with power and abundance!

But how do we tap into this power?

How do we unlock, unleash, and “upload” this power to a greater degree in our lives and in helping others?

Let’s focus on Ephesians 3:20 to engrave two great realities into our thinking:

(1) God can do, and

(2) we can do.

Strengthened with these truths, we can put our believing into action as we see it big, dare to do, and walk valiantly for God.

Like the believers in the first century, we can believe and utilize the superlative power God has freely given us to see His Word prevail, changing people’s lives for the better in our day and time.

First let’s focus on God can do. He is the source of our power.

“Now unto him [God] that is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think...” - Ephesians 3:20:

The first part of Ephesians 3:20 describes God’s unlimited ability to supply all the power we need in order to manifest a superior spiritual quality of life.

First, it mentions God “that is able to do.”

The Greek word translated “to do” means to make, form, or produce something tangible.

The Greek word translated “that is able” means to have (inherent and moral) power.

It is also translated “can” in the Bible.

I like to think of it as saying “God can do!”

To those of us with military backgrounds, “can do” communicates that nothing is too hard, no matter how big or tough the mission is. Our God is a can-do God!

How able is God?

What can He do?

Well, the Word tells us that with God, nothing shall be impossible (Luke 1:37).

Things that are impossible with men are possible with God (Matthew 19:26, Mark 10:27, and Luke 18:27).

Anything that God has promised, He is able to perform (Romans 4:21), and He has given us hundreds of promises in His Word to claim.

Ephesians 3:20 goes on to express the magnitude of God’s can-do ability as “exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think.”

Not just “above,” not just “exceeding above” — God can do “exceeding abundantly above” all that we ask or think, when we ask and think according to what He has promised in His Word!

This “exceeding abundantly above” can-do ability was demonstrated in Genesis 1 when God created the heavens and the earth.

Do you know how big the universe is?

No one knows for sure, but to give you an idea of its vastness, astronomers have calculated that the Andromeda Galaxy (a huge mass of stars in the northern sky) is 2.4 to 3 million light-years from earth.

A light-year (the distance light travels in a vacuum in a year) is almost 6 trillion miles (nearly 9.5 trillion kilometers).

If it is 3 million light-years away from us, then the Andromeda Galaxy is about 18 quintillion miles (almost 29 quintillion kilometers) from earth.

That’s the number 18 (or almost 29) with eighteen zeros after it!

This distance alone almost exceeds comprehension.

Yet, the Andromeda Galaxy is considered a local galaxy, only a fraction of the distance astronomers have observed into the universe.

The size of the universe God created is greater than we can comprehend. It is astronomical!

Within the universe, astronomers estimate there are billions of galaxies, many of which contain several hundred billion stars.

This demonstration of God’s power in creating the heavens and the earth shows us His can-do ability is exceeding abundantly above all we can ask or think!

Therefore, the power that He is able to supply to us is capable of accomplishing astronomically above anything we could ever want or need according to His Word.

Ephesians 1 also describes God’s can-do ability as follows:

“And what is the exceeding greatness of his power to us-ward who believe, according to the working [energeia, energizing] of his mighty power,

“Which he wrought [energeō, energized] in Christ, when he raised him from the dead, and set him at his own right hand in the heavenly places,

“Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:

“And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,

“Which is his body, the fulness of him that filleth all in all.” - Ephesians 1:19-23

God wants us to clearly perceive the exceeding magnitude and excellence of the power He can exert for those of us who believe.

He demonstrated this power when He raised Jesus Christ from the dead and placed him in a position of excellence far above any other power.

This tells us that there is no other power more excellent than God’s, and no authority on earth greater than the authority God has given us in the name of Jesus Christ….
