TWO GARDENS - The Garden of Eden saw Adam hide from God. The Garden of Gethsemane saw Jesus embrace God. Adam succumbed to temptation, Jesus resisted temptation. By birth we belong to Adam. By new birth we belong to Jesus. Two representative human beings. Two destinies. Two gardens. Only one way back to God - “Here it is in a nutshell: Just as one person did it wrong and got us in all this trouble with sin and death, another person did it right and got us out of it. But more than just getting us out of trouble, he got us into life! One man said no to God and put many people in the wrong; one man said yes to God and put many in the right.” Human destiny has been decided in two gardens. In the Garden of Eden, the first human beings went off the rails and derailed the human race ever since. Their declaration of independence led to estrangement from God and a destiny away from the perfect presence of God. In the Garden of Gethsemane, one human being, Jesus, stayed on track and offered the human race a way to get back on track themselves. Jesus’ decision to obey God meant that estrangement would no longer be the case; that there was the possibility of life forever with God. Adam got it all wrong. Jesus got it all right. Each of us belongs either to Adam or Jesus. We share the destiny of Adam, which is estrangement from God, or the destiny of Jesus, which is friendship with God. The Garden of Gethsemane saw Jesus embrace God.

Human destiny has been decided in two gardens.

The Garden of Eden saw Adam hide from God.

The Garden of Gethsemane saw Jesus embrace God.

Adam succumbed to temptation, Jesus resisted temptation.

By birth we belong to Adam. By new birth we belong to Jesus.

Two representative human beings. Two destinies.

Two gardens. Only one way back to God.

Blessings

THE NUMBER 4 - There are 4 gospel accounts of Jesus' life and ministry. Each of these emphasizes a unique aspect of his sacrifice and ministry. Matthew's focus is on Christ being the son of David and a King. Mark highlights the suffering servant aspect of his ministry. John proclaims Jesus is the One and Only begotten Son of God. And Luke showcases him as the Perfect Man. The number 4 derives its meaning from creation. On the fourth day of what is called 'creation week' God completed the material universe. Meaning of Numbers in the Bible

The Meaning of Numbers: The Number 4

The number 4 derives its meaning from creation.

On the fourth day of what is called 'creation week' God completed the material universe.

On this day he brought into existence our sun, the moon, and all the stars (Genesis 1:14-19).

Their purpose was not only to give off light, but also to divide the day from the night on earth, thus becoming a basic demarcation of time.

They were also made to be a type of signal that would mark off the days, years and seasons.

Interestingly, the Hebrew word for 'seasons' in Genesis 1:14 is moed (Strong's Concordance #H4150), which literally translated is "appointed times" (divine appointments) in reference to God's festivals.

This is the earliest known allusion to what would later be called the Holy (or Feast) days (periods) of worship, which are seven in number.

The 4th of the Ten Commandments is to remember and keep God's holy Sabbath day (Exodus 20:9-11).

The Sabbath day is tied directly to the creation week.

God himself made the period between Friday sunset and Saturday sunset extra special when he rested on it after bringing everything into existence the previous six days (Genesis 2:1-3, Exodus 20:11).

Appearances of the number four

One of the top ten most frequently mentioned women in the Bible, Eve, is only referenced four times (Genesis 3:20, 4:1, 2 Corinthians 11:3 and 1 Timothy 2:13).

Psalm 107 is the only section or chapter in God's word that contains the exact same phrase four times (Psalm 107:8, 15, 21 and 31).

The apostle Paul was a man familiar with 4 major first century cultures. He was a Roman citizen, he was a Jew who spoke Greek as well as Hebrew, and he was a Christian.

The Garden of Eden had a river which parted into the headwaters of four other rivers. These rivers were the Pison, Gihon, Hiddekel and the Euphrates (Genesis 2:10-14).

After Jesus was nailed and hung on a cross, Roman soldiers divided up his clothes into four parts (one for each soldier - John 19:23).

The four witnesses of God on earth are miracles, wonders, signs and the gifts of the Holy Spirit (Hebrews 2:4).

The number of times rainbows are referenced in scripture are four (Genesis 9, Ezekiel 1:28, Revelation 4:3, 10:1).

Ezekiel, prophecy and the number 4

In Ezekiel's well-known 'wheel in the middle of a wheel' vision (Ezekiel 1, 10) he sees four living creatures transporting a throne with four sides and four wheels.

Each of the living creatures (likely Cherubim, a class of angels) has four faces (the face of a man, lion, ox and eagle) and four wings (Ezekiel 1:6).

Later in the book that bears his name, Ezekiel is told to proclaim to Israel that an end is coming upon 'the four corners of the land' (Ezekiel 7:2).

In chapter 14 the prophet is told by the Eternal to ask Israel's unrepentant elders to repent or else four sore judgments will come upon Jerusalem.

They are the sword, famine, wild beasts or animals, and pestilence (Ezekiel 14:21).

Why did God make Eve from Adam’s rib? After all, if God had so desired, He could easily have formed Eve from the dust of the ground.
In fact, He made Adam this way, (Genesis 2:7), as well as “every beast of the field” and “every bird of the heavens” (Genesis 2:19).
So why did God make Eve differently?
Perhaps He wanted to instruct us not only about the roles of Adam and Eve, but also concerning that of “the last Adam”, the Lord Jesus Christ (1 Corinthians 15:45).
The first “not good” statement
Before God created Eve, He said: “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him” (Genesis 2:18).
Adam and Eve - creation.comIn the creation narrative, the reader should be jarred by this statement, because up until now, every time that God has surveyed His creation, He has pronounced it “good”, as we would expect it to have been before the Fall.
Man’s being alone is the first “not good” thing that required a solution.
So, God created Eve as “a helper fit for him” (Genesis 2:18b).
The term ‘helper’ (Hebrew ezer) does not indicate a lesser role or status, but rather function.
She was to be his counterpart, his complement.
Indeed, the term is used of God when He helps us, as in Psalm 33:20; 121:1–2.
In fact, this is the basis for the biblical name Azaria = God helped.
Adam’s words on being presented with Eve were: “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” (Genesis 2:23)
The significance of ‘one flesh’
But was it really necessary for Eve to be made out of Adam’s rib?
Adam and EveCalvin commented that “if the two sexes had proceeded from different sources, there would have been occasion either of mutual contempt, or envy, or contentions.”
And he went on to say that “something was taken from Adam, in order that he might embrace with greater benevolence, a part of himself. He lost, therefore, one of his ribs; but, instead of it, a far richer reward was granted him, since he obtained a faithful associate of life; for he now saw himself, who had before been imperfect, rendered complete in his wife.”
In a unique way, Eve was descended from Adam, because she was made from a part of him.
Eve also needed to be related to Adam — if she had been created out of the earth, she would be a completely independent creation.
But in a unique way, Eve was descended from Adam, because she was made from a part of him.
Eve’s descent from Adam is also crucial to the possibility of her salvation.
The prophet Isaiah wrote of the coming Messiah as being the “Kinsman-Redeemer” (Isaiah 59:20), i.e. one who is related by blood to those he redeems.
Hebrews 2:11–18 explains how Jesus took on Himself the nature of a man to save mankind, but not angels (nor hypothetical aliens for that matter).
Jesus entered Adam’s line to literally become our relative, to be a part of this one human family (Luke 3:23–38).
If all people are not descended from Adam, this vital kinsman-redeemer concept is undermined.
Or conversely, if there are people around today who are not descended from Adam and hence not related to Christ through Adam, they are not able to be saved.
Both situations are biblically unviable.
Responsibility
Adam, being the first human created, was and is the federal (or responsible) head of the human race.
If God used one of Adam's Ribs to make his Helpmate Eve, Wouldn't that have Made Eve a MALE clone? – Escaping Christian FundamentalismHe was thus the one whose attitude towards God determined the course of human history.
Eve, being made chronologically after Adam, as well as from Adam, is not assigned this responsibility in the Bible, even though she ate the forbidden fruit a few moments before Adam did (Genesis 3:6).
It was Adam to whom God had given the command not to eat (Genesis 2:16–17), and Adam was with Eve when she ate the fruit (Genesis 3:6).
However apparently, he did not restrain her other than to pass on the warning (Genesis 3:1–3).
Star Weekend Magazine :::Sin is basically the desire to live independently of and in rebellion against God.
The New Testament affirms not only that Eve was deceived (by the serpent), but also that Adam was not so deceived (1 Timothy 2:14).
It therefore appears that Adam made a deliberate choice to disobey God, i.e., the overt act expressed the sin that had already been committed within the heart (cf. Matthew 15:19).
The New Testament states that Adam was responsible for the coming of death into the world, cf. 1 Corinthians 15:21–22,
The First Man, a Bible story about Adam and Eve as told by Barbara Wilmerton Haas“For as by a man came death, by a man has come also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, so also in Christ shall all be made alive.”
This reminds us that, just as Adam was the head of the human race, the Lord Jesus Christ is the head of redeemed humanity (Romans 5:12–21,10 Ephesians 1:22–23; 5:23).
Roles of husband and wife in a Christ-centred marriage
One reason that marriage was set up by God is so that we would have a picture of what Christ’s love for the Church looks like.
Man and Woman - Chassidic ThoughtMonogamous marriage between one man and one woman serves this purpose in a way that a ‘marriage’ between two men, or two women, or any other arrangement cannot.
Indeed, when Jesus taught about marriage (Matthew 19:3–6, Mark 10:5–9), He cited the Creation account as real history (Genesis 1:27, 2:24).
Furthermore, the Bible sets specific roles for a husband and a wife within marriage.
The longest passage on this is Ephesians 5:22–33.
Husbands are told to “love their wives, as Christ loved the church and gave Himself up for her” (verses 25–27), “as their own bodies” (verses 28–30), and ahead of all other commitments (verses 31–33).
Wives are told to “submit to their own husbands, as to the Lord” (verse 22).
This does not contradict Paul’s assertion in Galatians 3:28 that “male and female… are all one in Christ Jesus.”
Note too:
Upon marriage, we are meant to leave our parents as if we had none (metaphorically speaking), because Adam and Eve (literally and historically) really did have none.
We are meant in marriage, at least ideally, to be as close to one another as if we were ‘one flesh’ (metaphorically speaking) because Eve really was (literally and historically) taken from Adam’s flesh.
A bride produced by a wound
When God made Eve from Adam’s side, Genesis 2:21–23 tells us that God put Adam into a deep sleep.
So, Eve the bride-to-be of Adam was (literally and historically) born from the wound in his side.
God Made Adam and Eve | Children's Bible LessonsWhen Jesus, the last Adam (1 Corinthians 15:45), died on the cross, His side was pierced by a spear thrust, in fulfillment of prophecy (John 19:34, 36–37; Zechariah 12:10).
This was just after His death — a death made necessary by the sin of the first Adam.
Flowing from that wound in the side of God’s Lamb (John 1:29), sacrificed for sin, was the precious blood (1 Peter 1:19) by which believers are cleansed from sin.
These believers will constitute Christ’s bride, the church.
So, metaphorically speaking, the church, Christ’s bride to be, was ‘born’ as it were from the spear wound in His side.
The heavenly Bride and Groom united
The Book of Revelation speaks of the ‘wedding feast of the Lamb’ at Christ’s return after the final defeat of death and evil (Revelation 19:6–9).
The Good News is that although all of us have sinned ‘in Adam’, the first husband, we can all be redeemed through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, the ‘last Adam’ and the Bridegroom of the Church, and through Him we can receive “the forgiveness of sins”, “the free gift of righteousness”, and pass “from death to life” (Colossians 1:14; Romans 5:17; 1 John 3:14).

THE TREE OF LIFE - The marvelous Tree of Life will be planted once again in the new earth which God will create some day - not just one Tree of Life as in the original Garden of Eden, but many such trees will be planted there with their beautiful and nutritious fruits, freely available to all who "do His commandments" - that is, to everyone in the holy city. The fruit will be different every month, but always "pleasant to the sight, and good for food." Furthermore, its leaves will also be of great value, since they are for "the healing of the nations." We can eagerly, yet patiently and fruitfully, look forward to enjoying the delicious, nourishing fruit of the Tree of Life in the holy city someday. The wonderful Tree of Life, discussed in the two "book ends" of the Bible, Genesis and Revelation, is one of the most fascinating (yet enigmatic) subjects in all the inspired word of God. It is first mentioned in Genesis 2:9: “And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.” The fruit of this tree was "good for food" and Adam was told that he could "freely eat" of it. He was not required to eat its fruit to stay alive! He was created by God to live without dying, with only one restriction - that is, he was not to eat of "the tree of knowledge of good and evil," for that would cause him to die. Later that same day, Eve was created, after Adam had first given names to each basic kind of animal - that is, specifically, only the "beast of the field" and the "fowl of the air" those that would be most likely to be in close proximity and possible fellowship with humans.

BY HENRY M. MORRIS, PH.D.

The wonderful Tree of Life, discussed in the two "book ends" of the Bible, Genesis and Revelation, is one of the most fascinating (yet enigmatic) subjects in all the inspired word of God.
It is first mentioned in Genesis 2:9: “And out of the ground made the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of knowledge of good and evil.”
The fruit of this tree was "good for food" and Adam was told that he could "freely eat" of it (Genesis 2:16).
tree of life new Jerusalem | Tree of Life Revelation, river of life going under. Twelve fruits, one each month. However, he was not required to eat its fruit to stay alive!
He was created by God to live without dying, with only one restriction - that is, he was not to eat of "the tree of knowledge of good and evil," for that would cause him to die (Genesis 2:17).
Later that same day, Eve was created, after Adam had first given names to each basic kind of animal - that is, specifically, only the "beast of the field" and the "fowl of the air" (Genesis 2:19), those that would be most likely to be in close proximity and possible fellowship with humans.
He could easily have accomplished this in a few hours.
Proverbs and the Tree of Life | OwlcationThen Eve was created and was given the same instruction about eating as Adam had received, for she referred to these instructions when the serpent tempted her some time later.
Despite God's clear warning, she and Adam both then rebelled against God's word and ate of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, and thus "sin entered into the world" (Romans 5:12).
As a result, death also came into the world when God - true to His word - told them that "unto dust shalt thou return" (Genesis 3:19).
Furthermore, God's Curse was pronounced on the very "ground" itself, out of which the bodies of both animals and men had been formed (Genesis 3:17; 1:24; 2:7), so that "the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now" (Romans 8:22).
Thus "by man came death," and "in Adam all die" (I Corinthians 15:21,22).
Then God cast Adam (with Eve) out of His beautiful garden, "lest he . . . take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever" (Genesis 3:22).
This seems to create a problem, possibly even an apparent contradiction in God's words.
God cannot contradict Himself, of course, so this is our problem, not His.
Many so-called "progressive" creationists, as well as theistic evolutionists, argue that Adam and Eve must already have been eating regularly of the Tree of Life in order to stay alive, even before they sinned.
Otherwise they would have died physically even if they had never sinned, or so the argument goes.
Then they argue that the death pronouncement by God on their sin was a "spiritual" death, not physical.
This idea, of course, contradicts the clear statement of God that they would die physically, as well as spiritually, with their bodies returning to the dust.
Furthermore, it makes a travesty of Christ's death on the cross for our sins!
Why would Christ have to die physically - and such a horrible physical death at that! - in order to atone for man's "spiritual" death?
But our accommodationist brethren are anxious to preserve the "old-earth" dogma of the evolutionists at all costs and so are willing to adjust Genesis and the gospel in whatever ways they need to do so in order to avoid conflict with modern scientism.
Bible Stories Explained: He Shall Be as a Tree Planted by the ...They insist that we must accept the evolutionary ages of geology with their billions of fossils and their billion-year spectacle of suffering and death before sin entered the world, in order to be acceptable to the intellectual community.
Nevertheless, the Genesis record - supported as literal history throughout all the rest of Scripture - is explicitly clear in teaching that physical suffering and death were introduced into the world only when Adam sinned.
Back To The Future Past?? · Mini Manna MomentsThus, even if Adam and Eve had continued to eat the delicious fruit of the Tree of Life after they had sinned, they would eventually have died anyway because God had said so!
However, this health-promoting fruit might have enabled them to live an inordinately long time before dying. Even as it was, Adam lived 930 years (Genesis 5:5).
The solution to our problem may well be that the Hebrew word olam (translated "for ever" in Genesis 3:22) could legitimately be translated "a very long time."
For example, in Isaiah 42:14 God says: "I have long time [olam] holden my peace." It is obvious that "for ever" is not warranted in this context, for God will not hold His peace forever!
Similarly, note Deuteronomy 33:15: ". . . precious things of the lasting [olam] hills." The hills may last a long time, but not forever.
The Hebrew olam is translated "old time" in Joshua 24:2, and is applied to the "ancient landmark" in Proverbs 22:28 and the "ancient people" in Isaiah 44:7.
There are a number of other such examples. The word olam certainly does not have to mean "forever" unless the context so indicates.
Therefore, it would be legitimate to read Genesis 3:22 as follows: ". . . lest he . . . take also of the tree of life and eat and live an excessively long time."
The River of Life – afterdeathsite
There is thus no necessary indication in this verse that death was in the world before Adam brought sin into the world.
How long the Garden of Eden survived in the primeval world after the expulsion of Adam and Eve has not been revealed.
If not destroyed earlier, it was certainly carried away by the devastating waters of the great flood, when "the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished" (2 Peter 3:6).
But the marvelous Tree of Life will be planted once again "in the midst of the paradise of God" in the new earth which God will create some day and "they that do his commandments" will then "have right to the Tree of Life" (Revelation 2:7; 22:14).
And note its remarkable character! "On either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations" (Revelation 22:2).
Not just one Tree of Life as in the original Garden of Eden, but many such trees will be planted there with their beautiful and nutritious fruits, freely available to all who "do His commandments" - that is, to everyone in the holy city.
What is heaven like & where is heaven? | Bibleinfo.comThe fruit will be different every month, but always "pleasant to the sight, and good for food."
Furthermore, its leaves will also be of great value, since they are for "the healing of the nations."
This cannot mean that, without these healing leaves the people in these "nations of them which are saved" (Revelation 21:24) would otherwise become sick and die because God has assured us that in the holy city, "there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away" (Revelation 21:4).
The leaves will not be needed to heal sickness any more than the fruit of that original Tree of Life in Eden was needed to prevent death.
Explore the Tree of Life | BibleProject™It is significant that the Greek word translated "healing" in this verse (therapeia) is translated "household" in Matthew 24:45 and Luke 12:42, referring to the staff of servants employed in keeping the affairs of a great house running efficiently.
It is the source of our English word "therapy."
Thus, the leaves of the tree will be for the "therapy," or the effective services, of the nations in the new earth.
As the fruits of the tree will surely contain many nutrients for happy vigorous service by Christ's servants in the ages to come (Revelation 22:3), so its leaves will contain a complex of chemical substances useful in the occupations and general economy of those ages.
It is pointless to speculate as to the exact nature of the Tree of Life, for God has not told us, and there is no tree like it in the present world.
The same is true with reference to the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. God is well able to create any kind of tree He wishes, and we do well to leave it at that!
The City of God (Revelation 21:9-27) – Revelation Made ClearBecause of the marvelous nature of the Tree of Life, however, the writer(s) of Proverbs used it (under divine inspiration of course) as a symbol of four wonderful truths.
First, the true wisdom "is a tree of life to them that lay hold upon her" (Proverbs 3:18). That true wisdom can be none other than Christ (I Corinthians 1:30, Colossians 2:3).
Second, "the fruit of the righteous is a tree of life" (Proverbs 11:30).
Indeed, "the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth" (Ephesians 5:9). A life such as that will be like a tree of life to all who encounter it.
Third, "when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life" (Proverbs 13:12). That is, fulfilled hope, like true wisdom and righteousness is so vitalizing as to be a source of renewed vigorous life.
Fourth, "a wholesome tongue is a tree of life" (Proverbs 15:4).
Therefore, "let your speech be alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man" (Colossians 4:6).
We can eagerly, yet patiently and fruitfully, look forward to enjoying the delicious, nourishing fruit of the Tree of Life in the holy city some day.

Note the incidental reference to "months." Time had a beginning when God created it (Genesis 1:1), but it will have no end. The words "time no longer" in Revelation 10:6 are in the sense of "delay no longer."
