CONFRONTING YOUR GIANTS - Whenever the Lord gives us a great “territory” to take, there will always appear to be insurmountable obstacles in the way. The problems we face may be bigger than us. Numbers chapters 13 and 14 tell a sobering story of God’s desire to bring His people into the Promised Land.

He instructed Moses to send 12 spies to view the land before the rest of the Israelites entered it.

After 40 days, the spies returned and brought a mixed report:

“We went to the land where you sent us. It truly flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. Nevertheless the people who dwell in the land are strong; the cities are fortified and very large… There we saw the giants…and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight” (Numbers 13:27-28, 33).

The first 10 spies reported that God had indeed given them a wonderful land of “milk and honey” and abundant crops.

But they saw no way the Israelites could actually possess such a land, for it was inhabited by strong enemies and impregnable fortresses.

Does this sound a lot like your life today?

You’ve heard about a fantastic place of victory and abundance that God has prepared for you, but the obstacles seem too great… the enemies too intimidating… the cost too high.

Caleb and Joshua gave the people a much different report, which unfortunately was disregarded by the cowardly and unbelieving spies:

“Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, ‘Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it.’”

“But the men who had gone up with him said, ‘We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we.’ And they gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, ‘The land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature’” (Numbers 13:30-32).

God’s people were at the very brink of the Promised Land.

They were poised to enter into their destiny.

Yet they allowed fear and disobedience to keep them in the wilderness for 40 more years!

What Went Wrong?

How could the 10 spies get things so wrong?

They gave a “bad report” because the obstacles to their destiny seemed like “giants.”

Is that how your problems look today – enormous and overwhelming?

The story of the 10 spies who brought back a fearful and negative report provides a sobering warning for us today.

Instead of cowering in fear and intimidation, we must aggressively take the battle to the enemy.

You see, whether in the physical or the spiritual realm, passivity and accommodation never bring victory in warfare.

Jesus repeatedly spoke of the need to be on the offensive against the enemy: “From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force” (Matthew 11:12).

Remember: You will never “take ground” from the enemy or reach your destiny without a fight!

Checking Your Vision

The 10 cowardly spies had a “vision” problem.

They saw the obstacles (the so-called “giants”) as BIG and God as SMALL.

Do you see how foolish that perspective is? It will always rob us of obeying God and pursuing the dreams He has given us.

Whenever the Lord gives us a great “territory” to take, there will always appear to be insurmountable obstacles in the way.

Unless we clearly see God as BIG and the problems, in comparison, as SMALL, we will inevitably draw back and remain in the wilderness.

Unless we see God correctly… we won’t have faith.

Unless we have faith… we won’t be able to obey.

Without faith and obedience… we won’t be able to do battle and enter into the destiny God has for us (Hebrews chapters 3 and 4).

Notice that when the Israelites saw God incorrectly, they saw themselves incorrectly as well.

The 10 fainthearted spies saw themselves and their countrymen as mere “grasshoppers” in comparison to the enemy “giants” in the Promised Land.

Just two of the spies, Joshua and Caleb, saw God instead.

What do you see when you look around you today?

Lots of believers are still locked in the “Grasshopper Syndrome,” failing to see who they are in Christ.

Sure, the problems we face may be bigger than us. But they definitely aren’t bigger than our Lord!

What’s Holding You Back?

Friend, is there a “giant” that has been keeping you out of your Promised Land God’s place of blessing and destiny for your life?

As you consider your life’s purpose and mission, is there something that is holding you back from truly entering in?

Financial concerns… struggles in your family… a problem with your health or emotions… or fear of failure?

Whatever your giant may be, you can overcome it in the same way David defeated Goliath.

The young shepherd boy faced a giant who was nearly 10 feet tall probably almost twice his size.

Yet David’s eyes weren’t on the size of his enemy, but rather on the size of his God!

No wonder David could have such audacious faith. His confidence was in the strength of the Lord, not in his own strength.

When taunted by his massive enemy, he fearlessly replied: “The battle is the Lord’s, and He will give you into our hands” (1 Samuel 17:45-47).

Be bold, my friend. No matter what kind of giant you may be facing, victory can be yours in Jesus’ name!

THE GRASSHOPPER SYNDROME - When we are reluctant to battle the giants we face, we end up in wandering in the spiritual wilderness. Instead of running away from our giants, stay strong and face them - they are not greater than the One who lives in us. The giant you face today might be fear, depression, discouragement, loneliness, bitterness, weakness, health issues or financial problems - whatever it is, remember, it is not bigger than our God. He is Greater than everything. One of the great challenges in our life is to see things in God’s perspective and stop seeing it from our view. Each one of us has that challenge to visualize our life in line with God. And our decisions depend on how we focus on it and many times the decisions are crossroads. We need to get hold of our decisions seriously as we cannot reverse what we have taken. Today, let us look into the story of Israelites. They were brought out of the land of Egypt by God and they witnessed how God has been miraculously leading them to the Promise Land. And when they finally arrived at the border of the land, they faced a big challenge blocking their way into the Promised Land. God has already given the land of Canaan to the children of Israel. God has promised them and the only thing the people of Israel has to do is, go into the land and possess it. God knows already that these people living in Canaan were giants. He didn’t ask for the report. The problem is, they focused on themselves instead of focusing on the promises of God.
What was that?
We will learn from the story of the Israelites and how are we facing the same today!
Shammua, Shaphat, Igal, Palti, Geul, Gaddiel, Gaddi, Ammiel, Suthur, Nahbi… Have you ever heard these names before? Does it sound familiar to you?
No! Have you heard of Joshua and Caleb? Now you might relate to the people I am referring to.
Those were the names of the ten spies who got into the Canaan to spy the land.
Are Crickets to Blame for the Mysterious “Sonic Attacks” at the ...They came back with the negative report scaring the Children of Israel and influencing them to disobey God’s instruction to enter into Canaan and possess the land.
Only Joshua and Caleb came up with the positive report.
God has already given the land of Canaan to the children of Israel.
God has promised them and the only thing the people of Israel has to do is, go into the land and possess it.
They have to just claim the land which was already provided by the Lord.
“Then they told him, and said: ‘We went to the land where you sent us. It truly flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. Nevertheless the people who dwell in the land are strong; the cities are fortified and very large; moreover we saw the descendants of Anak there.’”
The ten spies first acknowledged that what God was about to give us is indeed a land of milk and honey. And their report followed a ‘but’ clause. But we cannot claim it as the people living in it were giants...”
In verse 33, the spies say, “we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.”
God knows already that these people living in Canaan were giants. He didn’t ask for the report.
The problem is, they focused on themselves instead of focusing on the promises of God.
They have seen the plagues in Egypt. They have seen the Lord bringing them out of Egypt.
Surprising Insights from the Grasshopper | ReformJudaism.orgThey have seen the Lord parting the red sea for them. They have seen God providing them food in the desert. But still…
And we too sometimes, fall into the same category. We have seen God leading us miraculously in our life.
But nevertheless, when we face a problem, we get discouraged seeing the giants before us and forgetting the God who is greater than others.
We sometimes get the ‘Grasshopper syndrome’ and we stop from proceeding further.
Have you ever been felt this way? Are there areas of your life where you have not yet lived by faith because you fear what seems difficult or impossible by your own abilities or resources?
In this incident, there were two persons who gave a positive report as they had faith in God.
“Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, ‘Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it.’” - (Numbers 13:30)
Caleb and Joshua focused on the words of God and had a desire to obey it and their confidence was in doing the God’s will. (Numbers 14:8-9)
There were two reports from the 12 spies and sadly, the Israelites murmured against God heeding their ear to the 10 spies who gave a pessimistic report.
This is what the grasshopper syndrome does. Many times, I have failed to carry out the task given by the God only because of the fear to face the challenge.
When God gives us a task to do, He has already prepared us for that task. But, unfortunately, we behave like the Israelites seeing the giants before us.
Now, these are the symptoms of the ‘Grasshopper Syndrome’:
1. Doubted heart:
In spite of the God’s promised words to the Israelites, they always had a doubt in their heart always looking the positive as negative.
They had witnessed God’s doing in their physical eyes. They have been overshadowed by the cloud by day and warmed by the pillar of fire at night.
Besides seeing these things, they have a doubted heart. When things do not come out the way we hoped for, we start doubting and we lose our trust in God.
Hebrews 3:12 (NIV) - “See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.”
2. Double minded:
If you have noticed the Grasshoppers, they keep on hopping from one place to place rather than sitting in one place.
Category: Grasshoppers | curiousSCIENCEwritersAnd the same does our mind. It keeps wandering from place to place without being steady. Hence, it is easier for the devil to attack our mind if it is not kept steady.
When this syndrome affects us, we just can’t focus on the promises of God.
Though we see the things that God has done in our life, the next minute, fear fills our mind thinking about our future and the failures in the past.
When I was pregnant with my daughter, I was filled with happiness as God has promised us with so many things about her.
At times, I would be happy and suddenly, a fear would fill my mind thinking about the stillborn child in the previous pregnancy.
That’s how the devil plays with our mind trying to make us believe that, God’s promised would fail which is a total lie.
The Grasshopper syndrome causes us to doubt God’s word and His faithfulness.
Instead of acting like children of the king, we live as if we were paupers unable to fulfill God’s will. We lack faith, are double minded and unaware of who we really are in Christ.
James 1:6-8 - “but let him ask in faith, with no doubting, for he who doubts is like a wave of the sea driven and tossed by the wind.  For let, not that man suppose that he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.”
3. Inferiority Complex:
See what the ten spies said. They reported that “we look like grasshoppers”.
And that’s what the Satan does. He tries to convince us that we are unworthy and make us believe that he is stronger than us.
I remember the day when I started writing for God. The first thing that Satan tried to implant in my mind was, “my writings are not good and I am unfit to write”.
If I have heard those voices in my mind, I would have stopped writing and penning it down what God wants me to.
This syndrome will always make us feel inferior to others and try to destroy our self-image in God.
So, what should we do if we are affected by this syndrome?
First thing is we need to heed our ears to the positive reports from God as Joshua and Caleb did. Remember that they are the only two people from their generation to enter into the promise land.
The second thing is we need to remember that the battle starts from our mind. The areas of our thoughts are the main battleground. That’s why Paul asks us to renew our mind in God (Romans 12:2)
Thirdly, remember that God has already provided us the weapons to win on the battlefield. We need to just use our weapons to fight against the enemy instead of looking them as giants and staying out of the Promised Land.
So, what are these weapons? It is none other than the Word of God. Paul says about the armor of God in Ephesians.
We are instructed to ‘Take the sword of the spirit, which is the Word of God.’ - (Ephesians 6:17)
We know the outcome of the disobedience of Israel. Instead of entering into the Promised Land, they wandered in the wilderness for 40 years.
In our life as well, when we are reluctant and fail to battle the giants we face, we end up in wandering in the spiritual wilderness.
The Israelites, by running away from the giants, didn’t escape from them.
Once the generation of disobedience died, they came and stood at the same point to face the same giants to enter into the Promised Land.
So, friends, instead of running away from the giants we are facing, stay strong and face them and they are not greater than the One who is living in us.
Yes, we cannot win the battle alone. But when the Captain of our ship is our God, we are on the victory side.
Friends, I don’t know what giants you are facing in your life today.
It might be fear, depression, discouragement, loneliness, bitterness, weakness, health issues, and financial problems.
Whatever it is, remember, it is not bigger than our God. He is Greater than everything.
When you are on God’s side, you can determine who the grasshopper is!
Only thing is “The CHOICE is YOURS”. It is time for us to stand up and confront the giants and win the battle. God bless!

THE SECRET TO FACING YOUR GIANTS – Giants remind us of how small and helpless we are. On our own, we can’t beat them. They outclass us in every conceivable way. The safer bet is to run, to hide. It’s easier to give up and give in before we get hurt. After almost half a century of waiting, Caleb’s faith was still strong. When it came time to seize what God had promised him, Caleb didn’t hesitate for a second. There were still giants roaming on Caleb’s mountain, but that didn’t matter. He was a few years from being 90 years old now, but that didn’t matter, either. In Caleb’s mind, if God had promised it, that was enough. The other factors were irrelevant. There are still giants to fight. Not all giants are made of flesh and blood. They come in many other forms. Addictions. Flaws. Shortcomings. Temptations. Blind spots. Trials. Anything bigger than us, stronger than us, faster than us — anything more powerful than us, anything we don’t have the skill to face on our own, anything with the potential to knock us down and beat us senseless — these are giants, too, often marshaled and commanded by Satan the devil, the eternal enemy of God’s people. Giants are standing between you and the future God has in store for you. Go drive them out.

The towering giants of the Bible may be ancient history, but God’s people today are required to do battle with a far more fearsome breed of giant.
The Secret to Facing Your Giants
Eighty-five is not generally a good age to begin fighting giants. Most people would consider it reckless, foolish and ill-advised.
Caleb, however, was not most people.
At 85, Caleb was spry and determined and ready to do the impossible. He had wandered through the wilderness for 40 years, motivated by a promise from God — and now, at long last, the time had come to claim it.
But we’re getting ahead of the story.
Forty-five years earlier, the fledgling nation of Israel had gathered at the border of the Promised Land.
God had freed them from the hand of their oppressive taskmasters in Egypt through wave after wave of earth-shaking, perspective-shattering plagues, each designed to showcase the omnipotence of the unrivaled and limitless God of the universe.
As the Israelites had journeyed toward Canaan, God proved Himself again and again by performing the impossible — bringing water out of rocks, bread out of heaven and quail out of the sky.
Image result for images Joshua and CalebGod protected and provided for His people every step of the way, and now here they were, at the very border of the land He had promised to give them.
Enter Caleb. He and 11 other men were selected to enter the Promised Land as spies, surveying the land and bringing back news of its inhabitants.
Upon their return, all 12 men agreed that the land “truly flows with milk and honey” (Numbers 13:27), but they couldn’t agree on what to do about it.
They had found more than milk and honey in Canaan — they had found a land filled with strong people, fortified cities and, worst of all, “the descendants of Anak” (Numbers 13:28).
Refusing the Promised Land
Giants. The descendants of Anak were giants. Israel fell to pieces. Clearly — clearly — the God who had shattered the might of Egypt and miraculously sustained them through a barren wilderness had done so only to kill them all with giants.
Only two of the spies, Caleb and Joshua, made a case for entering the land.
After quieting the people, Caleb insisted, “Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it” (Numbers 13:30).
The other 10 spies only added to the hysteria. “We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we,” they said.
Image result for images Joshua and Caleb canaan“We were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight” (Numbers 13:31, 33).
When the people of Israel started talking about turning around and returning as slaves to Egypt, Caleb and Joshua pleaded with their fellow countrymen.
“Do not rebel against the LORD, nor fear the people of the land, for they are our bread; their protection has departed from them, and the LORD is with us. Do not fear them” (Numbers 14:9).
Israel responded by crying out for Joshua and Caleb to be executed on the spot.
It never happened, of course. There’s a lot more to the story, but the short version is this: God refused to let Israel enter Canaan.
As punishment for their faithlessness, Israel was sentenced to 40 years of wandering.
The current generation would live and die in the wilderness, with Joshua and Caleb as the only exceptions.
Joshua would go on to lead the next generation into the Promised Land, while Caleb received a special promise from God: “My servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit in him and has followed Me fully, I will bring into the land where he went, and his descendants shall inherit it” (Numbers 14:24).
And so the Israelites wandered. And wandered. And wandered.
Days turned into weeks; weeks, into months; months, into years; and years, into decades.
One by one, the generation that refused the Promised Land died off, while the next generation came into its own.
Under the leadership of Joshua, no one was able to stand before the armies of Israel.
Territory by territory, God drove out the wicked inhabitants of Canaan, and the time soon came to divide up the land.
Claiming the promises
For Caleb, now 85, it was finally time to claim the promise God had made 45 years earlier.
He told Joshua: “I am as strong this day as on the day that Moses sent me; just as my strength was then, so now is my strength for war, both for going out and for coming in. Now therefore, give me this mountain of which the LORD spoke in that day; for you heard in that day how the Anakim were there, and that the cities were great and fortified. It may be that the LORD will be with me, and I shall be able to drive them out as the LORD said” (Joshua 14:11-12).
He, like Sarah and many of the Bible’s other heroes, “judged Him faithful who had promised” (Hebrews 11:11).
Image result for images Joshua and Caleb canaan
So, what does that mean for us?
Just this: There are still giants to fight.
Modern-day giants
Not all giants are made of flesh and blood. They come in many other forms. Addictions. Flaws. Shortcomings. Temptations. Blind spots. Trials.
Anything bigger than us, stronger than us, faster than us — anything more powerful than us, anything we don’t have the skill to face on our own, anything with the potential to knock us down and beat us senseless — these are giants, too, often marshaled and commanded by Satan the devil, the eternal enemy of God’s people (Revelation 12:9-10).
.
New Call-to-action
Giants remind us of how small and helpless we are. On our own, we can’t beat them. They outclass us in every conceivable way.
The safer bet is to run, to hide, to surrender before the battle even starts. Why bother trying? It’s easier to give up and give in before we get hurt, because winning is impossible.
That’s the approach the Israelites took thousands of years ago, and it’s still the easiest route to take today.
The problem is, when we surrender to a giant — especially one of the modern-day variety — we give up more than just a fight.
We give up control over our own lives, handing the reins over to Satan himself. When we decide beforehand that we can’t win these battles, we forfeit any hope of growth, of overcoming and of breaking free.
Choosing not to fight means embracing stagnancy and accepting defeat as a lifestyle.
Can you afford to live that way? Can anyone?
Israel’s 12 spies all walked the same land, all saw the same giants, but only two of them saw a battle they could win.
Why?
The strength of faith
The key difference isn’t what these men saw; it’s how they saw it. The spies looked at the giants and saw wicked men standing in the way of God’s plan.
Image result for images Joshua and CalebMost of the spies saw the giants and knew there was no way they could win. Caleb and Joshua looked at the giants and knew there was no way God couldn’t win.
The giants in your life are standing in the way of God’s plan for you, and how you look at them is going to change how you deal with them.
They’re bigger than you, yes. They’re stronger than you, absolutely. They could grind you under their feet like dust and not think twice.
But are they bigger than God? Are they stronger than God? Could they last even a moment in an arena with the Almighty?
Caleb and Joshua knew the answer. They could both look back at the miracles God had performed in their lives — in the lives of all of Israel — and know, beyond the shadow of a doubt, that God was able to give them every victory, no matter how improbable, unlikely or, yes, even impossible.
That’s why Caleb could tell his brethren to go up and seize the land, “for we are well able to overcome it.”
That’s why he could wander for 40 years, trusting God to make good on His promise. That’s why, at 85 years old, he was ready and willing to work with God and toss some giants out of his mountain.
.
I don’t know what miracles God has performed in your life.
I don’t know what seas He’s parted for you or how often He’s rained down bread from heaven to give you exactly what you needed, exactly when you needed it — but I do know this:
God cares for you (1 Peter 5:7).
He’s not some impartial observer with no vested interest in the battles you fight. He wants you to win.
He wants you to grow and overcome; and what’s more, He gives you the equipment and the strength to make it happen (2 Corinthians 10:4-5; Philippians 4:13).
You are a potential son or daughter of God Most High (2 Corinthians 6:18), and He wants you to succeed.
You’re going to face giants. You’re going to have to take a stand against enemies far too powerful for you to handle on your own, but you’re not alone.
That’s what Caleb understood and Israel continually failed to grasp.
In your toughest battles, in the middle of fights where you find yourself out of your depth and over your head, you can be “confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good work in you will complete it” (Philippians 1:6, emphasis added).
You are a good work in progress. That is God’s plan. That has always been God’s plan; and no opponent, no enemy, no impossible giant is strong enough to stand in the way.
Every giant is different, and there’s no one-size-fits-all solution.
But the core, underlying principle never changes: If God led you to this fight, He can lead you to victory.
If you’re willing to put in the time and the effort and look to Him for guidance, God will get you where you need to be.
Right now, giants are standing between you and the future God has in store for you. They’re intimidating, but with God’s help they’re far from invincible. Can you see them? Do you understand what’s at stake?
Then what are you waiting for?
Go drive them out.

He particularly enjoys writing on Christian living themes—especially exploring what it looks like when God’s Word is applied to day-to-day life. In addition to writing blog posts, he is also the producer of the Life, Hope & Truth Discover video series and regularly writes for Discern magazine.
