There is, certainly, a time to work -- and work hard -- in the service of the Lord. There are spiritual battles to be fought and races to be run. But when we have done the best we know how and still don't see the answer, there comes a time when we must simply sit still, and wait for the Lord. He would have us "be still, and know that |He is| God." - "Then said she, Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall: for the man will not be in rest, until he have finished the thing this day." - This was the instruction given to Ruth by Naomi in hopes that her kinsman, Boaz, would be willing to perform his family duty and marry Ruth, whose Jewish husband had died in Moab. He would have us "be still, and know that |He is| God."

"Then said she, Sit still, my daughter, until thou know how the matter will fall: for the man will not be in rest, until he have finished the thing this day." - (Ruth 3:18)

 

This was the instruction given to Ruth by Naomi in hopes that her kinsman, Boaz, would be willing to perform his family duty and marry Ruth, whose Jewish husband had died in Moab.

Ruth's behavior had been honorable, and she had done what she could to let Boaz know she was willing to be his wife, but now she could do nothing except to sit still and wait.

When the Jews were being invaded by the Assyrian armies and felt they needed an alliance with Pharaoh, God warned: "The Egyptians shall help in vain, and to no purpose: therefore have I cried concerning this, Their strength is to sit still. . . . In returning and rest shall ye be saved; in quietness and in confidence shall be your strength" (Isaiah 30:7-15).

Long before, when the children of Israel were in even more desperate circumstances, with the Egyptian armies pursuing them and the Red Sea in front of them, Moses had said: "Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the Lord" (Exodus 14:13).

Soon, the chariots of Pharaoh were at the bottom of the sea, just as, in due time, Boaz did marry Ruth, and as, 600 years later, the hosts of the Assyrians were slain by the angel of the Lord (Isaiah 37:36).

There is, certainly, a time to work -- and work hard -- in the service of the Lord.

There are spiritual battles to be fought and races to be run.

But when we have done the best we know how, according to the Scriptures, and still don't see the answer, there comes a time when we must simply sit still, and wait for the Lord.

He would have us "be still, and know that |He is| God" (Psalm 46:10).

Just before the invasion, allied commander General Dwight Eisenhower issued a now-famous letter to the 156,000+ soldiers that stormed the beaches at Normandy, the 13,000+ paratroopers dropped behind enemy lines and the naval officers on the 5,000 ships off the coast of France.

In his letter, Eisenhower stated, “You are about to embark on the Great Crusade toward which we have striven these many months.

“The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty-loving people everywhere march with you.

“In company with our brave Allies and brothers-in-arms on other fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.

“Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle-hardened. He will fight savagely.”

Eisenhower ended his letter stating, “I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full Victory! Good Luck!

“And let us beseech the blessing of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.”

Eisenhower expected victory … but he carefully warned his troops of the reality that it would not come easily because the enemy was savage!

C.S. Lewis once said, “There are two equal and opposite errors into which our race can fall about the devils. One is to disbelieve in their existence. The other is to believe and to feel an excessive and unhealthy interest in them. They themselves are equally pleased by both errors and hail a materialist or a magician with the same delight.”

Our daily battles may be subtle, obvious, or brutal; but for most of us they aren't easy, and luck will not figure into our success.

What we need will be the courage which faith inspires, and the perseverance which God will bless.

The word of God is our sword, along with the rest of the armor [Ephesians 6:11-18] needed to walk in His victory.

We simply must press on and press through… the glory of that D-Day victory will pale in comparison with ours, which will stand for eternity.

So be reminded this day … at the end of the Book, “We win!”

The believer’s standing in Christ is in the grasp of Jesus and the Father’s hands., Faith is only as strong as the object of their Faith, and that is Jesus Christ. It is up to the believer to take up the full armor of God and to do it before the enemy attacks. God will not put it on for us.

Have you ever felt like the more you do for Christ, the more you suffer in other areas of your life?

The enemy is most annoyed when we live a righteous life and he will do anything in his power to stop us in our tracks.

Thankfully for us, he doesn’t have any power over us when we know how to fight back the right way.

Here are four ways to fight your way through a spiritual battle…

The Shield of Faith

In preparing the Ephesian church for a spiritual battle, Paul wrote, “In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one” (Ephesians 6:16).

Why would Paul describe faith as a shield?

It might be because if the believer rightly understood their standing in Christ and that they are held firmly in the grasp of Jesus and the Father’s hands (John 10:28-29), then they might understand their faith is only as strong as the object of their Faith, and that is Jesus Christ.

Every believer is sealed by the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1).

The Breastplate of Righteousness

This “bulletproof” vest is the shield of righteousness and a shield that the enemy cannot penetrate.

Maybe you don’t even know you have one, but the fact is that 2 Corinthians 5:21 states we have the very righteousness of Christ: “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

If God is for you, what do you have to worry about if anyone is against you (Romans 8:31)?

The Sword of the Word

Satan and his minions most likely know the Word of God better than we do, as Satan quoted Scripture quite easily when He tempted Christ in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11).

Actually, Satan misquoted the Bible or took verses out of context, and today the subtle enemy is still doing it, even from behind a few pulpits.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise to the Christian since “even Satan disguises himself as an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14).

Therefore, we need to take up “the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:17).

If you memorize or hide God’s Word in your heart, it can help you resist temptation and possibly not sin, as the psalmist wrote, “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you” (Psalm 119:11).

The Helmet of Salvation

We Christians must use caution with what is allowed into the “eye gate” or into our minds because it can cause us to stumble into sin, which is why God gave us the armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18).

We want to protect what goes into our minds, so we must “take the helmet of salvation” and then put it on (Ephesians 6:17),

“for the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds.

“We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ” (2 Corinthians 10:4-5).

Overcoming your spiritual battles

I haven’t written anything new because the Bible gives us all we will need to prepare for and then engage the invisible enemy.

Ephesians chapter six equips the believer, but it is up to the believer to take up the full armor of God and to do it before the enemy attacks.

God will not put it on for us. “Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm” (Ephesians 6:13).

Without armor, or spear, or shield, and with only a sling and five smooth stones, David confronted the nine-foot champion of the pagan army in the name of the true God, and soon the giant lay dead with his face to the ground. The battle must always be the Lord's. We even have a mandate to attack the enemy in His stronghold. When the battle is going well, we must not boast, for the battle is the Lord's. When the battle is going hard, we must not despair, for the battle is the Lord's.

The Battle Is the Lord's

"And all this assembly shall know that the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD's, and he will give you into our hands." (1 Samuel 17:47)

These were the ringing words of faith uttered by young David as he faced the Philistine giant, Goliath.

Without armor, or spear, or shield, and with only a sling and five smooth stones, David confronted the nine-foot champion of the pagan army in the name of the true God, and soon the giant lay dead with his face to the ground.

The battle must always be the Lord's. 

"For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against . . . the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places" (Ephesians 6:12).

Spiritual battles are not won by bullets, nor by ballots, nor by any human means. 

"Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God" (Psalm 20:7).

"There is no king saved by the multitude of an host: a mighty man is not delivered by much strength. . . Behold, the eye of the LORD is upon them that fear him, upon them that hope in his mercy" (Psalm 33:16, 18). 

We even have a mandate to attack the enemy in His stronghold.

Christ taught, "Upon this rock (of faith in Christ as divine Savior) I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it" (Matthew 16:18)

It is easy, in trying to do a work for God, to rely on human abilities and devices, but these will fail, for the battle is the Lord's.

When the battle is going well, we must not boast, for the battle is the Lord's.

When the battle is going hard, we must not despair, for the battle is the Lord's.

He is our strength. "For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war after the flesh: (For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal, but mighty through God to the pulling down of strong holds)" (2 Corinthians 10:3-4). 

In this spiritual war, there are no fence-sitters – you are either on the Lords’ victorious army or with the wicked “Powers” of Satan.

Be sure you are listed with the victorious army of the Lord.  Settle that sin issue right now by saying this prayer:

“Father God, I confess I am a sinner and my sins have separated me from You.

I am truly sorry. I now want to turn away from my past sinful life and live a new life pleasing to You.

Please forgive me, and help me avoid sinning again.

I believe that Your Son, Jesus Christ died for my sins, was resurrected from the dead, is alive, and hears my prayer.

I invite Jesus to become the Lord of my life, to rule and reign in my heart from this day forward.

Please send Your Holy Spirit to help me obey You, and to do Your will for the rest of my life. Thank you, Lord, that according to Your Word, I am born again. I promise to obey You and study your Word – the Bible.

Use me for Your glory.

In Jesus' Name I pray. Amen.”
