AGING SUPERHEROES - They're sure hard to find, but when you do... The apostle Paul did promise that while "outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day." In this way, the tough and cross-molded apostle raised hopes that we could not just get older, but we could actually become better! You may be young. If you are, you will be old one day or suffer an alternative that is not so great. You may be "middle-aged" and uncertain what to do with the last half of your life. You may be aging and worry about your value in a world culture that chases youth. Rather than chase the latest fad in age prevention or age denial, let's embrace the opportunities the Lord has placed before us at every age. But where do we go to find aging heroes of faith? The Bible does have a few — like Moses, Joshua and Caleb — yet even in Scripture, those extraordinary heroes who are old are hard to find. My heart breaks to read of so many great servants of God who blew it when they grew old. So as the wise teacher's "days of trouble come" to me, I'm hungry to find heroes who served God and grew better with age. The Jesus Window

The wise teacher's words are as true as they are depressingly descriptive:

“Remember your Creator in the days of your youth,

before the days of trouble come

and the years approach when you will say,

‘I find no pleasure in them’ —

before the sun and the light

and the moon and the stars grow dark,

and the clouds return after the rain;

when the keepers of the house tremble,

and the strong men stoop,

when the grinders cease because they are few,

and those looking through the windows grow dim;

when the doors to the street are closed

and the sound of grinding fades;

when people rise up at the sound of birds,

but all their songs grow faint;

when people are afraid of heights

and of dangers in the streets;

when the almond tree blossoms

and the grasshopper drags itself along

and desire no longer is stirred.

Then people go to their eternal home

and mourners go about the streets.

Remember him — before the silver cord is severed,

and the golden bowl is broken;

before the pitcher is shattered at the spring,

and the wheel broken at the well,

and the dust returns to the ground it came from,

and the spirit returns to God who gave it.” -

(Ecclesiastes 12:1—7).

As my octogenarian mother repeatedly reminds me with the wag of her finger, "Just remember! Getting old isn't for sissies!"

The apostle Paul did promise that while "outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day."

In this way, the tough and cross-molded apostle raised hopes that we could not just get older, but we could actually become better!

Over the years, I've looked for modern heroes of faith who have done just that.

However, biblical heroes who demonstrate this promise are harder to find.

That's one reason why I am so thankful that in the stories of Jesus' birth we have the great heroes of Simeon and Anna (Luke 2:25-40).

Simeon and Anna were old; really old (Luke 2:25-26, 36)

They had lived devout and faithful lives before God. They were passionate for YAHWEH and the Almighty's promises to redeem his people.

They didn't quit because of discouragement, and they never gave up on God's promises even though their hopes had not been realized for decades.

Because of their faith, they didn't become sour, dour, or cynical despite the harsh political realities and religious failings all around them.

They continued to look forward to the day when God's promises would be answered.

They dedicated themselves to living by the power of the Holy Spirit and pursuing God daily in prayer.

Then, on a most unlikely and otherwise usual day, both had their dreams fulfilled and their hopes rewarded.

They got to meet baby Jesus, God's promised Messiah.

They were privileged to proclaim the dawning of God's salvation, the promised time of consolation for Israel and redemption of Jerusalem.

For me, five shared qualities in these two aging superheroes grab my attention and challenge me to step up my passion for the LORD.

These shared qualities give me a road map for how I want to live my life as I go forward and live the will of God. Anna and Simeon:

o  Sustained a vibrant faith through prayer, fasting, and the power of the Holy Spirit even though they lived in very difficult times (Luke 2:25-27, 37).

o  Looked forward to the future God had promised for his people, not at the current political circumstances in which they found themselves (Luke 2:25, 38).

o  Assured the parents of Jesus that the future was bright because of their child even though their lives would be touched with pain (Luke 2:29-32, 35, 38).

o  Gave thanks for the promised future that God was unfolding before their eyes and in their time (Luke 2:29-32, 38).

o  Shared the good news about Jesus with all who would listen to them (Luke 2:28, 38).

These shared qualities give me a road map for how I want to live my life as I go forward.

I don't know where you are in your journey through life.

You may be young. If you are, you will be old one day or suffer an alternative that is not so great.

You may be "middle-aged" and uncertain what to do with the last half of your life.

You may be aging and worry about your value in a world culture that chases youth.

However, I am convinced that these five qualities that we see in Anna and Simeon can add life to your years and value to any age.

Rather than chase the latest fad in age prevention or age denial, let's embrace the opportunities the Lord has placed before us at every age.

As we do, let's consider these five spiritual practices as life-giving and age-defying moves we can make that help us truly get better and not just get older!

MADE FOR ETERNITY - It is only natural to feel dissatisfied, tired and empty with what is on offer in this world. Sometimes we feel like nothing really offers the fulfillment we are looking for. And nothing in this world ever will. We are made for eternity and to be eternally in God’s presence. Until then we wait, with hope and with faith in God’s promise that He will return in full glory to take us with Him into eternal glory. Because we are loyal to God, we will often feel like strangers in a world that does not know Him. ‘He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end.’ - God has ‘set eternity in the hearts of men.’ This means that we can never be completely satisfied with earthly pleasures and pursuits. C.S. Lewis one said that ‘if I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.’ We are pilgrims passing through to a better, richer, more beautiful and more lasting place. We are indeed made for eternity. Because we are created in God’s image we have a spiritual thirst that physical entities will never satiate. We have eternal value in God’s eyes, were made for friendship with Him and nothing but being in the eternal God’s presence can fully satisfy us. Our hearts will be restless till they find their rest in Him.

‘He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the hearts of men; yet they cannot fathom what God has done from beginning to end.’ - Ecclesiastes 3:11 (NIV).

God has ‘set eternity in the hearts of men.’

This means that we can never be completely satisfied with earthly pleasures and pursuits.

C.S. Lewis one said that ‘if I find in myself a desire which no experience in this world can satisfy, the most probable explanation is that I was made for another world.’

We are pilgrims passing through to a better, richer, more beautiful and more lasting place (1 Peter 2:11).

God has built in each of us a yearning for the kind of perfect world that can only be found in His perfect rule.

He has given us a glimpse of the perfection of His creation.

But it is only a brief glimpse, the best is yet to come.

And every believer who longs to be with the Father, yearns for that day when He returns, and we will spend eternity with Him in that beautiful new creation (Revelation 21:1).

Prayer:

‘Heavenly Father, give me faith, hope and courage to live among a people who do not know you.

Help me to long for nothing on this earth as much as I long for your return and my eternal home with you.’

In Jesus’ Mighty Name,

AMEN!

Final Thoughts:

It is only natural to feel dissatisfied, tired and empty with what is on offer in this world.

Be Greatly Blessed!

BEWARE OF SEDUCTION - The last days will witness a great apostasy, a turning away from Biblical faith. We need to know our God and His Word! We need to understand Satan's schemes, and discern and expose them. The enemy is subtle and he knows how to mix lies into truth -- however our protection is truly knowing and loving Jesus, living in His Word, continuing in prayer, and being watchful. The days are evil and the Word even says if it were possible even the elect would be deceived! Don't be seduced; but stay close to the cross, for there is a strong delusion coming, and many will believe what is false!- “But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.” - In Ancient Greece, mythology and history were hard to distinguish. Tales of gods and demigods abounded. The chief god of Mount Olympus was Zeus. It is told that Zeus became enamored with the princess Europa and decided to seduce and ravish her. Zeus shape-shifted, transforming himself into a tame white bull. Europa, the daughter of King Agenor of Sidon, was picking flowers, when she saw the bull, and then climbed on his back. Zeus carried her away. The Romans later recounted the tale which became known as the "seduction of Europa", (with the Roman "Jupiter" replacing Zeus). It seems telling that modern Europe has adopted this story and symbol as an identifying emblem: a "Woman riding a Beast", known as "Europa".

“But I fear, lest somehow, as the serpent deceived Eve by his craftiness, so your minds may be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.” - 2 Corinthians 11:3

In Ancient Greece, mythology and history were hard to distinguish.

The symbol is depicted on Euro coins; sculptures of Europa adorn important European buildings, and the dual figure is in plain sight throughout the European continent.

Europe gave birth to the Enlightenment period, which emphasized reason and individualism.

Also in Europe the Bible was first translated and printed in different languages.

The small continent saw the birth of the Protestant Reformation which eventually gave rise to a new age of missionary activity unmatched since the time of the apostles.

The two streams of Faith and Reason have since competed in Europe, yet all the while Europa seems to have perpetuated her pagan influence in this region, notwithstanding the centuries of Christianity on European soil.

Can it be accidental that Europa, a powerful pagan symbol of lust and idolatry, epitomizes European culture and identity?

Has Europe been seduced by Greece?

And what about the church?

The author of Ecclesiastes repines, "There is nothing new under the sun."

The book of Exodus recounts YHVH's deliverance of the children of Israel with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, yet, Israel too was somehow seduced into idol worship of a golden calf through Egyptian religious influence which they carried out with them.

Do we think we are immune to seduction?

Our enemy has studied us and has been practicing his art for thousands of years.

An "angel of light" [2 Corinrthians 11:14], is how he disguises himself; a deceiving wolf dressed up in wool.

The last days will witness a great apostasy, [2 Thessalonians 2:3-4] a turning away from Biblical faith.

We need to know our God and His Word!

We need to understand Satan's schemes [2 Corinthians 2:11], and discern and expose them [Ephesians 5:11].

The enemy is subtle and he knows how to mix lies into truth -- however our protection is truly knowing and loving Yeshua (Jesus), living in His Word, continuing in prayer, and being watchful.

The days are evil and the Word even says if it were possible even the elect would be deceived!

Don't be seduced; but stay close to the cross, for there is a strong delusion coming [2 Thessalonians 2:11], and many will believe what is false!
