BE GREAT? YES... - Jesus recognized desire and ambition for significance and accomplishment. He even affirmed them, and gave instruction how to direct these passions - but His perspective required an important reorientation. Desire and ambition should be intense, in the right expression, toward the right objective - because God is great, with great desires, so those whom He created reflect this characteristic. The critical element then, is not to kill desire but to sanctify it by yoking it to love for God and love for others, expressed by becoming a servant. Being great in God’s eyes comes from being great like Him, and in Him, who was the most exemplary servant ever. Jesus said that true greatness is achieved in servanthood. Jesus came from glory and lowered Himself from the heights of heaven - He taught us how to be great. The awesome paradox that the Son of God, entirely equal with the Father as His express image, became a flesh and blood human in order to die, is the quintessential act of loving servanthood. This qualified Him to receive the greatest Name above every name. Consecrate your passion, dedicate your desire, submit your ambition, by offering your body as a living sacrifice to God - His Holy Spirit will inspire your desire, fashion your passion, and condition your ambition, to bear the beautiful fruit of His Spirit for His Kingdom's sake. The greatest in the Kingdom will be the servant of all! Be a servant of His love, His compassion, and His grace. Exemplify Godly ambition!

“Then He came to Capernaum. And when He was in the house He asked them, ‘What was it you disputed among yourselves on the road?’ But they kept silent, for on the road they had disputed among themselves who would be the greatest. And He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, ‘If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.’” - Mark 9:33-35

Yet as believers, we often consider ambition to be a bad and worldly thing.

But Yeshua (Jesus) said, “He who would be greatest among you must be the servant of all.”

So think about it … did Yeshua say we shouldn't desire greatness?

No, to the contrary, He recognized desire and ambition for significance and accomplishment.

He even affirmed them, and gave instruction how to direct these passions. But His perspective required an important reorientation.

C.S. Lewis had something illuminating to share about this subject:

"If we consider the unblushing promises of reward and the staggering nature of the rewards promised in the Gospels, it would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased." (Excerpt from "The Weight of Glory").

Lewis agrees with the Lord that desire and ambition should be intense, in the right expression, toward the right objective.

Some people have great and passionate worldly desires and ambitions for wealth, power, fame, etc, and even these desires reveal an aspect of God's image which every man carries, because God is great, with great desires, so those whom He created reflect this characteristic.

The critical element then, is not to kill desire, as for example Buddhist religion demands, but to sanctify it... How?

Simply by yoking it to love for God and love for others, expressed by becoming a servant.

Being great in God’s eyes comes from being great like Him, and in Him, who was the most exemplary servant ever.

Yeshua said that true greatness is achieved in servanthood.

In this light, ambition, passion, and desire, under the unction of the Holy Spirit do not serve pride or vainglory, but are expressed in humility, servanthood and self-giving.

Yeshua came from glory and lowered Himself from the heights of heaven, and so He taught us how to be great.

The awesome paradox that the Son of God, entirely equal with the Father as His express image, became a flesh and blood human in order to die, is the quintessential act of loving servanthood.

This qualified Him to receive the greatest Name above every name.

Perhaps you have been seeking to beat down your ambition, squelch your desire, and quench your unquenchable passions.

Apart from being nearly impossible, short of becoming a self-flagellating monk, these energies ought rather to be redirected.

Consecrate your passion, dedicate your desire, submit your ambition, by offering your body as a living sacrifice to God [Romans 12:1-2].

His Holy Spirit will inspire your desire, fashion your passion, and condition your ambition, to bear the beautiful fruit of His Spirit for His Kingdom's sake.

The greatest in the Kingdom will be the servant of all! Be a servant of His love, His compassion, and His grace.

Exemplify Godly ambition!

Peter Christian Lutkin (March 27, 1858 – December 27, 1931) was an American organist, choral conductor, and composer.

Peter Lutkin was born in Thompsonville, Wisconsin. His parents, Peter Christian and Hannah (Olivarius) Lutkin, emigrated to the U.S. from Denmark in 1844. He attended Chicago public schools and was a chorister and organist at St. Peter and St. Paul's Episcopal Church. At age thirteen he began formal music training, studying organ with Clarence Eddy, piano with Regina Watson, and theory with Frederick Grant Gleason.

At age twenty-one, he became a piano instructor in the Conservatory of Music at Northwestern University. In 1881 he traveled to Berlin to study with Oscar Ralf (1881–1964) (sv), rl August Haupt]] (1810–1891), and Woldemar Bargiel (1828–1897). After a year he was admitted to the Royal School of Art in Berlin. He returned to Chicago to serve as organist and choirmaster, first at St. Clement's Protestant Episcopal Church and later at St. James Episcopal Church. He also served a three-year appointment on the faculty of the American Conservatory of Music in Chicago. He was a widely respected organist and helped found the American Guild of Organists in 1896. He married, on October 27, 1885, Nancy Lelah Carmen (1861–1949).

In 1891, he returned to Northwestern University, where he contributed to significant improvements in the Conservatory of Music. In 1892, the Conservatory became a department in the College of Liberal Arts. In 1895, a separate School of Music was formed and Lutkin was appointed its first dean. He remained in that position until he was named Dean Emeritus in 1928. While at Northwestern, he founded the Women's Cecilian Choir, the Men's Glee Club, and the A Cappella Choir (1906), the first a cappella choir in the U.S. The group was organized to illustrate a university lecture on the music of Renaissance composers. Shortly thereafter, F. Melius Christiansen established the St. Olaf Choir (1912), and John Finley Williamson organized the Westminster Choir (1920). By the middle of the 1930s, a cappella choirs had become a staple in choral programs in high schools, colleges, and universities across the U.S. Lutkin's Northwestern A Cappella Choir was widely recognized for its pure tone and exceptional balance—a result achieved by using no accompaniment, even during rehearsals.

Lutkin became a national spokesperson for a cappella singing. He appeared on programs of the Music Teachers National Association in 1909 (when his choir performed), 1916, 1917, 1923 and 1928. He directed the Music Supervisors Chorus of five hundred voices at their national convention in 1920, and the Northwestern University Choir sang for the Music Supervisors Convention in Chicago in 1928. In most of these appearances, he focused on the merits of unaccompanied singing and a cappella choral repertoire.

In 1918, the honor society Pi Kappa Lambda (ΠΚΛ) was established at Northwestern University, and the Greek letters chosen were based on Lutkin's name.

As a composer, Lutkin specialized in writing unaccompanied choral music, primarily for his own choir. He wrote at least thirty hymn tunes, numerous songs for children, and sixty-five choral anthems, some of which remain in print today. He co-edited a Methodist hymnal and was musical editor of the Methodist Sunday-School Hymnal. Generations of choristers likely were first introduced to his choral music through his benediction setting, The Lord Bless You and Keep You, with its famous concluding sevenfold amen.

In addition to his position as Dean and Director of Choirs at Northwestern University, he also served as Professor of Theory, Piano, Organ, and Composition in the School of Music, 1895-1931; Director of the School's Department of Church and Choral Music, 1926–28; and Lecturer in Church Music at Seabury-Western Theological Seminary. He was awarded an honorary doctorate in music from Syracuse University. He wrote several books including a history of the Northwestern School of Music.

Lutkin died on December 27, 1931, in Evanston, Illinois, after suffering a heart attack.

EYES OF GOD - “Behold, the eye of the Lord [is] on those who fear Him, On those who hope in His mercy, To deliver their soul from death, And to keep them alive in famine.” “For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of [those] whose heart [is] loyal to Him. In this you have done foolishly; therefore from now on you shall have wars.” “The Lord [is] in His holy temple, The Lord’s throne [is] in heaven; His eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men.” “For the ways of man [are] before the eyes of the Lord, And He ponders all his paths.” “The eyes of the Lord [are] in every place, Keeping watch on the evil and the good.” “The eyes of the Lord preserve knowledge, But He overthrows the words of the faithless.” “The eyes of the Lord [are] on the righteous, And His ears [are open] to their cry.” “[You are] great in counsel and mighty in work, for your eyes [are] open to all the ways of the sons of men, to give everyone according to his ways and according to the fruit of his doings.” “[You are] of purer eyes than to behold evil, And cannot look on wickedness. Why do You look on those who deal treacherously, [And] hold Your tongue when the wicked devours A [person] more righteous than he?” “And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things [are] naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we [must give] account.”

The Eyes Of God

A Look At The Eyes Of God

By Mike Riley
Throughout the Bible, there are many aspects of God’s eyes that are revealed to us.
The following are fifteen such aspects:
·    Grace-bestowing eyes: “But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord” (Genesis 6:8-NKJV).

·      Benevolent eyes: “For the land which you go to possess [is] not like the land of Egypt from which you have come, where you sowed your seed and watered [it] by foot, as a vegetable garden; but the land which you cross over to possess [is] a land of hills and valleys, which drinks water from the rain of heaven, a land for which the Lord your God cares; the eyes of the Lord your God [are] always on it, from the beginning of the year to the very end of the year” (Deuteronomy 11:10-12-NKJV).
·      Value-seeing eyes: “And indeed, as your life was valued much this day in my eyes, so let my life be valued much in the eyes of the Lord, and let Him deliver me out of all tribulation” (1 Samuel 26:24-NKJV).
·      Running eyes: “For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong on behalf of [those] whose heart [is] loyal to Him. In this you have done foolishly; therefore from now on you shall have wars” (2 Chronicles 16:9-NKJV).
·      Beholding eyes: “The Lord [is] in His holy temple, The Lord’s throne [is] in heaven; His eyes behold, His eyelids test the sons of men (Psalm 11:4-NKJV).
·      Guiding eyes: “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will guide you with My eye” (Psalm 32:8-NKJV).
·      Pondering eyes: “For the ways of man [are] before the eyes of the Lord, And He ponders all his paths” (Proverbs 5:21-NKJV).
·      All seeing eyes: “The eyes of the Lord [are] in every place, Keeping watch on the evil and the good” (Proverbs 15:3-NKJV; cf. Jeremiah 16:17-NKJV).
·      Preserving eyes: “The eyes of the Lord preserve knowledge, But He overthrows the words of the faithless” (Proverbs 22:12-NKJV).
·      Protecting eyes: “Behold, the eye of the Lord [is] on those who fear Him, On those who hope in His mercy, To deliver their soul from death, And to keep them alive in famine” (Psalm 33:18-19-NKJV).
·      Discerning eyes: “The eyes of the Lord [are] on the righteous, And His ears [are open] to their cry” (Psalm 34:15-NKJV; cf. 1 Peter 3:12-NKJV).
·      Remembering eyes: “They do not consider in their hearts [That] I remember all their wickedness; Now their own deeds have surrounded them; They are before My face” (Hosea 7:2-NKJV).
·      Judging eyes: “[You are] great in counsel and mighty in work, for your eyes [are] open to all the ways of the sons of men, to give everyone according to his ways and according to the fruit of his doings” (Jeremiah 32:19-NKJV).
·      Pure eyes: “[You are] of purer eyes than to behold evil, And cannot look on wickedness. Why do You look on those who deal treacherously, [And] hold Your tongue when the wicked devours A [person] more righteous than he?” (Habakkuk 1:13-NKJV).
·      Penetrating eyes: “And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things [are] naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we [must give] account” (Hebrews 4:13-NKJV).
Brethren and friends, knowing that God is the possessor of all of the above eyes, let us follow the inspired instructions of the apostle Paul in Ephesians 5:15-17:
“See then that you walk circumspectly [carefully], not as fools but as wise, redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Therefore do not be unwise, but understand what the will of the Lord is.” (NKJV)
Would you want to have a deeper relationship with God?
God has made it possible for you to know Him and experience an amazing change in your own life by receiving His Son, Jesus Christ, and have eternal life.
Say the following prayer:

“Father God, I confess I am a sinner and my sins have separated me from You.

I am truly sorry. I now want to turn away from my past sinful life and live a new life pleasing to You. I receive Your free gift of salvation.

Please forgive me, and help me avoid sinning again.

I believe that Your Son, Jesus Christ died for my sins, was resurrected from the dead, is alive, and hears my prayer.

I invite Jesus to become the Lord of my life, to rule and reign in my heart from this day forward. Thank You that according to your Word, I am now born again, has eternal life, and I am now Your child.

Please send Your Holy Spirit to help me obey You, and to do Your will for the rest of my life. I promise to study Your Word – the Bible.

Please use me for Your glory.

In Jesus' Name I pray. Amen.”

If you have just put your trust in Jesus Christ, you have been born into God’s family.
As a spiritual baby, you need to grow by feeding on God’s Word – the Bible (1 Peter 2:2).
You must have a good modern translation Bible and begin prayerfully reading it. Start in the New Testament, such as the Gospel of John or Paul’s letters to the Ephesians.
Also, you need to join a Christian fellowship where the Bible is taught and where God is truly worshiped.
God bless you as you begin your new life with Him!
