BE GREAT? YES... - Jesus recognized desire and ambition for significance and accomplishment. He even affirmed them, and gave instruction how to direct these passions - but His perspective required an important reorientation. Desire and ambition should be intense, in the right expression, toward the right objective - because God is great, with great desires, so those whom He created reflect this characteristic. The critical element then, is not to kill desire but to sanctify it by yoking it to love for God and love for others, expressed by becoming a servant. Being great in God’s eyes comes from being great like Him, and in Him, who was the most exemplary servant ever. Jesus said that true greatness is achieved in servanthood. Jesus came from glory and lowered Himself from the heights of heaven - He taught us how to be great. The awesome paradox that the Son of God, entirely equal with the Father as His express image, became a flesh and blood human in order to die, is the quintessential act of loving servanthood. This qualified Him to receive the greatest Name above every name. Consecrate your passion, dedicate your desire, submit your ambition, by offering your body as a living sacrifice to God - His Holy Spirit will inspire your desire, fashion your passion, and condition your ambition, to bear the beautiful fruit of His Spirit for His Kingdom's sake. The greatest in the Kingdom will be the servant of all! Be a servant of His love, His compassion, and His grace. Exemplify Godly ambition!

“Then He came to Capernaum. And when He was in the house He asked them, ‘What was it you disputed among yourselves on the road?’ But they kept silent, for on the road they had disputed among themselves who would be the greatest. And He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, ‘If anyone desires to be first, he shall be last of all and servant of all.’” - Mark 9:33-35

Yet as believers, we often consider ambition to be a bad and worldly thing.

But Yeshua (Jesus) said, “He who would be greatest among you must be the servant of all.”

So think about it … did Yeshua say we shouldn't desire greatness?

No, to the contrary, He recognized desire and ambition for significance and accomplishment.

He even affirmed them, and gave instruction how to direct these passions. But His perspective required an important reorientation.

C.S. Lewis had something illuminating to share about this subject:

"If we consider the unblushing promises of reward and the staggering nature of the rewards promised in the Gospels, it would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased." (Excerpt from "The Weight of Glory").

Lewis agrees with the Lord that desire and ambition should be intense, in the right expression, toward the right objective.

Some people have great and passionate worldly desires and ambitions for wealth, power, fame, etc, and even these desires reveal an aspect of God's image which every man carries, because God is great, with great desires, so those whom He created reflect this characteristic.

The critical element then, is not to kill desire, as for example Buddhist religion demands, but to sanctify it... How?

Simply by yoking it to love for God and love for others, expressed by becoming a servant.

Being great in God’s eyes comes from being great like Him, and in Him, who was the most exemplary servant ever.

Yeshua said that true greatness is achieved in servanthood.

In this light, ambition, passion, and desire, under the unction of the Holy Spirit do not serve pride or vainglory, but are expressed in humility, servanthood and self-giving.

Yeshua came from glory and lowered Himself from the heights of heaven, and so He taught us how to be great.

The awesome paradox that the Son of God, entirely equal with the Father as His express image, became a flesh and blood human in order to die, is the quintessential act of loving servanthood.

This qualified Him to receive the greatest Name above every name.

Perhaps you have been seeking to beat down your ambition, squelch your desire, and quench your unquenchable passions.

Apart from being nearly impossible, short of becoming a self-flagellating monk, these energies ought rather to be redirected.

Consecrate your passion, dedicate your desire, submit your ambition, by offering your body as a living sacrifice to God [Romans 12:1-2].

His Holy Spirit will inspire your desire, fashion your passion, and condition your ambition, to bear the beautiful fruit of His Spirit for His Kingdom's sake.

The greatest in the Kingdom will be the servant of all! Be a servant of His love, His compassion, and His grace.

Exemplify Godly ambition!

JESUS TOUCHED THE UNTOUCHABLES - In Scripture the leper is symbolic of the ultimate outcast: infected by a condition he did not seek, rejected by those he knew, avoided by people he did not know, condemned to a future he could not bear… The touch did not heal the disease. It was the pronouncement and not the touch of Christ that cured the condition. The infection was banished by a word from Jesus. The loneliness, however, was treated by a touch from Jesus. Jesus touched the untouchables of the world. When Jesus came down from the hill, great crowds followed him. Then a man with a skin disease came to Jesus. The man bowed down before him and said, “Lord, you can heal me if you will.” Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man and said, “I will. Be healed!” And immediately the man was healed from his disease. I wonder… about the man who felt Jesus’ compassionate touch. He makes one appearance, has one request, and receives one touch. But that one touch changed his life forever…. In New Testament times leprosy was the most dreaded disease. The condition rendered the body a mass of ulcers and decay. Fingers would curl and gnarl. Blotches of skin would discolor and stink. Leprosy would numb nerve endings, leading to a loss of fingers, toes, even a whole foot or hand. Leprosy was death by inches. Considered contagious, the leper was quarantined, banished to a leper colony.

When Jesus came down from the hill, great crowds followed him.

Then a man with a skin disease came to Jesus.

The man bowed down before him and said, “Lord, you can heal me if you will.”

Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man and said, “I will. Be healed!”

And immediately the man was healed from his disease.  - Matthew 8:1-3

I wonder… about the man who felt Jesus’ compassionate touch. He makes one appearance, has one request, and receives one touch.

But that one touch changed his life forever….

I wonder about this man because in New Testament times leprosy was the most dreaded disease.

The condition rendered the body a mass of ulcers and decay.

Fingers would curl and gnarl. Blotches of skin would discolor and stink.

Certain types of leprosy would numb nerve endings, leading to a loss of fingers, toes, even a whole foot or hand.

Leprosy was death by inches.

The social consequences were as severe as the physical. Considered contagious, the leper was quarantined, banished to a leper colony.

In Scripture the leper is symbolic of the ultimate outcast: infected by a condition he did not seek, rejected by those he knew, avoided by people he did not know, condemned to a future he could not bear…

The touch did not heal the disease, you know.

Matthew is careful to mention that it was the pronouncement and not the touch of Christ that cured the condition.

“Jesus reached out his hand and touched the man and said, ‘I will. Be healed!’ And immediately the man was healed from his disease” (Matthew 8:3).

The infection was banished by a word from Jesus.

The loneliness, however, was treated by a touch from Jesus.

Jesus touched the untouchables of the world.

BY THIS WE KNOW LOVE - As we relish the goodness of God, let it naturally fill our lives and touch those around us as well. Let the healing balm of God’s compassion soothe all who are hurting. Let peace, forgiveness, and rest fill our hearts. Let favour replace hatred, blessings replace cursings, life replace death. All’s well when we dwell in God’s love. May His compassion reign. - ‘By this we know love, that He laid down His life for us’ - We love, because He first loved us - remember Jesus’ compassion today. He laid down His life and suffered on the Cross so that we may be saved and enjoy the blessings of God. And part of that blessing, is that we have also inherited a heart of compassion. If God’s people are to be living examples of one thing, that ought to be compassion. And yet our first response is often something else. They should know better than to make such a mess of their lives. Showing compassion will interrupt our comfort and security. It may be an inconvenience. But if we are to be people after God’s own heart, showing compassion should not be an option. Showing compassion is helping practically, giving sacrificially and loving without judgement or bias. It can be offering a meal, driving another when they have no fuel or sitting beside someone and crying with them in their soul-crushed state. Compassion begins where loud applause and cheering ends. In fact, the best acts of compassion will never be known to others. They are the kind acts we do in obscurity.

‘By this we know love, that He laid down His life for us’ - (1 John 3:16)

We love, because He first loved us.

Beloved, remember Jesus’ compassion today.

He laid down His life and suffered on the Cross so that we may be saved and enjoy the blessings of God.

And part of that blessing, is that we have also inherited a heart of compassion.

As we relish the goodness of God, let it naturally fill our lives and touch those around us as well.

Let the healing balm of God’s compassion soothe all who are hurting.

Let peace, forgiveness, and rest fill our hearts.

Let favour replace hatred, blessings replace cursings, life replace death.

All’s well when we dwell in God’s love.

May His compassion reign.

Be Greatly Blessed!

Prayer:

Father, God of all compassion, create in me a heart that is full of love for those who need help.

Show me, within the context of my own life, how I might show care and concern to those you direct me to.

Surround me with your presence. Fill me with your love, blessings and favour.

So that it may overflow and touch the lives of those around me.

In Jesus’ Mighty Name,

AMEN!

What is our first response when we see another in need? Judgement, criticism, anger or compassion?

If God’s people are to be living examples of one thing, that ought to be compassion.

And yet our first response is often something else.

How could that person have got themselves into this mess?

Why should I go out of my way to help?

Can’t someone else rescue them?

Our compassion is known only to the receiver and it is given with no thought of thanks or gain.

Compassion is a service done unto the Lord for His glory alone.

Genuine compassion takes risks.

Genuine compassion gives away what most people cling to and reaches out when most people would hold back.

Their caring brings them up close to feel the pain of others and genuine compassion is prepared to do whatever is necessary to demonstrate true concern.

Consider our response to the need of others today.

Or are we so removed from the needy that we don’t know how to respond?

Do we see those who are struggling, who require our help, as an inconvenience, or a threat to our own comfortable and secure lifestyle?

God’s heart goes out to the poor, the needy and the lost. Our hearts ought to ache for these people too.

But above all, remember God’s forgiveness and His love for you.

For those who have been forgiven much, love much. We love because He first loved us.

It is through understanding God’s love for us that we can develop the heartfelt response through the overflowing of His compassion in us.

So love freely, for you have already been loved completely.
