What is the distinction between the intermediate (present) Heaven and the eternal Heaven (the New Earth)?

When a Christian dies, he or she enters into what theologians call the intermediate state, a transitional period between our past lives on Earth and our future resurrection to life on the New Earth.

Usually when we refer to “Heaven,” we mean the place that Christians go when they die.

When we tell our children “Grandma’s now in Heaven,” we’re referring to the intermediate Heaven.

By definition, an intermediate state or location is temporary.

Life in the Heaven we go to when we die, where we’ll dwell prior to our bodily resurrection, is “better by far” than living here on Earth under the Curse, away from the direct presence of God (Philippians 1:23).

Still, the intermediate Heaven is not our final destination.

Though it will be a wonderful place, the intermediate Heaven is not the place we are made for. It’s not the place God promises to refashion for us to live in forever.

God’s children are destined for life as resurrected beings on a resurrected Earth.

We must not lose sight of our true destination. If we do, we’ll be confused and disoriented in our thinking about where, and in what form, we will spend eternity.

Will we live in Heaven forever?

The answer to the question depends on what we mean by Heaven.

Will we be with the Lord forever? Absolutely.

Since Heaven is where God dwells, we’ll always be in Heaven.

But will we always be with God in exactly the same place that Heaven is now?

No. In the intermediate Heaven, we’ll be in Christ’s presence, and we’ll be joyful, but we’ll be looking forward to our bodily resurrection and permanent relocation to the New Earth.

It bears repeating because it is so commonly misunderstood: When we die, believers in Christ will not go to the Heaven where we’ll live forever.

Instead, we’ll go to an intermediate Heaven.

In the intermediate Heaven, we’ll await the time of Christ’s return to the earth, our bodily resurrection, the final judgment, and the creation of the new heavens and New Earth.

If we fail to grasp this truth, we will fail to understand the biblical doctrine of Heaven.

Everything hinges on the resurrection. God does not abandon our bodies, nor does he abandon the earth itself.

It may seem strange to say that the Heaven we go to at death isn’t eternal, yet it’s true.

“Christians often talk about living with God ‘in heaven’ forever,” Grudem writes.

“But in fact the biblical teaching is richer than that: it tells us that there will be new heavens and a new earth — an entirely renewed creation — and we will live with God there... There will also be a new kind of unification of heaven and earth... There will be a joining of heaven and earth in this new creation.”

Let me suggest an imperfect analogy to illustrate the difference between the intermediate Heaven and the eternal Heaven.

Suppose you lived in a homeless shelter in Miami.

One day you inherit a beautiful house, fully furnished, on a gorgeous hillside overlooking Santa Barbara, California.

With the home comes a wonderful job doing something you’ve always wanted to do. Not only that, but you’ll also be near close family members who moved from Miami many years ago.

On your flight to Santa Barbara, you’ll change planes in Dallas, where you’ll spend an afternoon.

Some other family members, whom you haven’t seen in years, will meet you at the Dallas airport and board the plane with you to Santa Barbara.

You look forward to seeing them.

Now, when the Miami ticket agent asks you, “Where are you headed?” would you say “Dallas”?

No. You would say Santa Barbara, because that’s your final destination.

If you mentioned Dallas at all, you would only say, “I’m going to Santa Barbara by way of Dallas.”

When you talk to your friends in Miami about where you’re going to live, would you focus on Dallas?

No. You might not even mention Dallas, even though you will be a Dallas-dweller for several hours.

Even if you spent a week in Dallas, it wouldn’t be your focus.

Dallas is just a stop along the way. Your true destination — your new permanent home — is Santa Barbara.

Similarly, the Heaven we will go to when we die, the intermediate Heaven, is a temporary dwelling place, a stop along the way to our final destination: the New Earth.

(Granted, the Dallas analogy breaks down big time, since being with Jesus and reunited with loved ones in the intermediate Heaven will be immeasurably more wonderful, to say the least, than a lay-over in Dallas! But hopefully you get the point.)

Another analogy is more precise but difficult to imagine, because for most of us it’s outside our experience.

Imagine leaving the homeless shelter in Miami and flying to the intermediate location, Dallas, and then turning around and going back home to your place of origin, which has been completely renovated — a New Miami.

In this New Miami, you would no longer live in a homeless shelter, but in a beautiful house in a glorious pollution-free, crime-free, sin-free city.

So, you would end up living not in a new home, but a radically improved version of your old home.

This is what the Bible promises us — we will live with Christ and each other forever, not in the intermediate Heaven, but on the New Earth, where God — Father, Son (eternally incarnate) and Holy Spirit — will be at home with his people.

Of course, God will no more be confined to the New Earth than He is now confined to the intermediate Heaven.

God is everywhere present. But his special dwelling, what he regards as his home (and ours) will be on the New Earth, where He will dwell with His people.

Revelation 21:1-3 is explicit on this point: “Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth... I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God... And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Now the dwelling of God is with men, and he will live with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God’” - (Revelation 21:1-3).

Heaven, God’s central dwelling place, will one day be with his resurrected people, on the New Earth.

Based on the redemptive work of Christ, God will resurrect them. The fact that they are part of the first universe and that God called them “very good” means they will be part of the resurrected universe.

What Does the Bible Mean by the Term "New Heavens"?

What does the Bible mean by the term new heavens? And why is it referred to heavens (plural) but then switches to heaven (singular)?

Answer from Randy Alcorn:

The Old Testament uses no single word for universe or cosmos.

When Genesis 1:1 speaks of God’s creating “the heavens and the earth,” the words are synonymous with what we mean by universe.

Heavens refers to the realms above the earth: atmosphere, sun, moon, and stars, and all that’s in outer space.

Then in Isaiah, God says, “Behold, I will create new heavens and a new earth” (Isaiah 65:17).

This corresponds to Genesis 1:1, indicating a complete renewal of the same physical universe God first created.

Revelation 21:1-2 says, “I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away. . . I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God.”

Because “new heaven” (singular) is used here, some think it’s God’s dwelling place that passes away and is renewed.

But the present Heaven is described as unshakable in ways the physical universe isn’t (Hebrews 12:26-28).

The “new heaven” in Revelation 21:1 apparently refers to exactly the same atmospheric and celestial heavens as “heavens” does in Genesis 1:1.

It also corresponds to the “new heaven(s)” of Isaiah 65:17, Isaiah 66:22, and 2 Peter 3:13.

While some passages suggest that the universe will wear out and the stars will be destroyed, others indicate that the stars will exist forever (Psalm 148:3-6).

Is this a contradiction? No. We too will be destroyed by death, yet we will last forever.

The earth will be destroyed in God’s judgment, yet it will last forever.

In exactly the same way, the stars will be destroyed, yet they will last forever. Based on the redemptive work of Christ, God will resurrect them.

Earth is the first domain of mankind’s stewardship, but it is not the only domain.

Because the whole universe fell under mankind’s sin, we can conclude that the whole universe was intended to be under mankind’s dominion.

If so, then the entire new universe will be ours to travel to, inhabit, and rule — to God’s glory.

Do I seriously believe the new heavens will include new galaxies, planets, moons, white dwarf stars, neutron stars, black holes, and quasars? Yes.

The fact that they are part of the first universe and that God called them “very good” means they will be part of the resurrected universe.

When I look at the Horsehead Nebula and ask myself what it’s like there, I think that one day I’ll know.

Just as I believe this “self-same body” — as the Westminster Confession put it — will be raised and the “self-same” Earth will be raised, I believe the “self-same” Horsehead Nebula will be raised.

Why? Because as part of the present heavens, it will be raised as part of the new heavens.

Will the new planets be mere ornaments, or does God intend for us to reach them one day?

Even under the Curse, we’ve been able to explore the moon, and we have the technology to land on Mars.

What will we be able to accomplish for God’s glory when we have resurrected minds, unlimited resources, complete scientific cooperation, and no more death?

Will the far reaches of our galaxy be within reach? And what about other galaxies, which are plentiful as blades of grass in a meadow?

We will expand the borders of righteous mankind’s Christ-centered dominion, not as conquerors who seize what belongs to others, but as faithful stewards who will occupy and manage the full extent of God’s physical creation.

THE TIME BETWEEN THE DEATH AND THE RESURRECTION - What Do You Believe About the Intermediate State? - If we are with Christ once we have died, then we continue existing. Paul speaks of this state as "very much better" than the present state. If we were suddenly unconscious at death until the resurrection, wouldn't it be better to remain in this life because at least then we would have conscious fellowship with Christ? We indeed do have souls which continue existing after the body dies. We not only continue existing between death and the resurrection, but that we are aware of our existence. Revelation 6:9 speaks of John seeing underneath the altar "the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God." These individuals are surely not in a state of soul sleep because in the next verse they cry out "How long, O Lord."

What Do You Believe About the Intermediate State?

The "intermediate state" is the time between the death and the resurrection.

Some have held that during this time we are unconscious or possibly even go out of existence. We do not think that this is biblical.

The biblical evidence is that our soul continues on after death and that we remain conscious in the intermediate state while awaiting our final destiny of resurrected existence in the new heavens and new earth.

First, Paul spoke of having the desire "to depart and be with Christ, for that is very much better" (Philippians 1:23).

Notice first of all that Paul speaks of death as a departure (from the body) not into temporary nothingness or unconsciousness but to be with Christ.

If we are with Christ once we have died, then we continue existing.

Second, notice that Paul speaks of this state as "very much better" than the present state.

It would be hard to say such a thing of a state of complete unconsciousness.

Particularly when we consider that Paul's passion was to know Christ, it would seem that the reason the state beyond death is better than this present life is because we are with Christ and know it.

If we were suddenly unconscious at death until the resurrection, wouldn't it be better to remain in this life because at least then we would have conscious fellowship with Christ?

Second, Paul also said that "while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord" and that therefore he would "prefer rather to be absent from the body and to be at home with the Lord" (2 Corinthians 5:6-8).

First, it is significant that he speaks of the possibility of being absent from the body.

This implies that we indeed do have souls which continue existing after the body dies.

Second, notice again that he speaks of this state as his preference, which indicates (as in Philippians 1:23) that we not only continue existing between death and the resurrection, but that we are aware of our existence.

Third, even though the thief on the cross has been used to prove about every point in Christian theology, his case is still relevant here: "And He said to him, 'Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in Paradise'" (Luke 23:43).

The Jehovah's Witness's New World Translation punctuates Jesus words as "Truly I say to you today, you shall be with Me in Paradise," giving the impression that "today" refers simply to the time of Jesus' statement.

But the context demands that the "today" refer to when the thief on the cross would be with Jesus in paradise, because Jesus is responding to his request in the previous verse: "Jesus, remember me when you come in your kingdom!"

The response, "Today you shall be with Me in paradise" can in this context only be taken to mean, "Not only will I remember you when I come in my kingdom, but already today you shall be with me in heaven."

Fourth, Revelation 6:9 speaks of John seeing underneath the altar "the souls of those who had been slain because of the word of God."

These individuals are surely not in a state of soul sleep because in the next verse they cry out "How long, O Lord."

Today’s Scripture: Revelation 22:1–5 (NIV)

Insight: The book of Revelation gives us a glimpse of what the future will be like when we exist together with God in eternity.

Chapters 21–22 list a variety of “new” things we’ll experience in the new heaven and new earth.

In today’s passage, we see the existence of two trees of life — or one tree that spans both sides of the river (Revelation 22:2).

Access to the tree of life was lost when Adam and Eve were banished from the garden (see Genesis 3:24).

In the new heaven, its fruit, seemingly meant to be consumed, will always be available. The tree of life underscores the idea that life in the kingdom is ongoing.

As the first immigrant to the US to pass through Ellis Island in 1892, Annie Moore must have felt incredible excitement at the thought of a new home and a fresh start.

Millions would pass through there afterward.

Just a teenager, Annie had left behind a difficult life in Ireland to start a new one.

Carrying only a little bag in her hand, she came with lots of dreams, hopes, and expectations of a land of opportunity.

How much more excitement and awe will God’s children experience when we see “a new heaven and a new earth” (Revelation 21:1).

We will enter what the book of Revelation calls “the Holy City, the new Jerusalem” (verse 2).

The apostle John describes this amazing place with powerful imagery.

There will be “the river of the water of life, as clear as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb” (Revelation 22:1).

Water represents life and abundance, and its source will be the eternal God Himself.

John says that “no longer will there be any curse” (verse 3).

How incredible to know that God, who loves His children and purchased us with the life of His Son, is preparing such an amazing new home — where He Himself will live with us and be our God (Revelation 21:3).

NEW HEAVEN AND NEW EARTH - Our earth and heaven as we know it now will pass away. In its place we will be getting a New Heaven and a New Earth. God will wipe away every tear. There will be no more death, sorrow, crying, or pain ever again. All of the old and former things will now pass away. Now God will make everything completely brand new!

Satan, all of his fallen angels and all of unsaved humanity have been cast into the Lake of Fire and Brimstone. There is now only one thing left.

God will now be giving the rest of saved humanity their final reward – the New Heaven and New Earth.

This will be our final abode and resting place with the Lord.

During the 1000 year Millennial Kingdom, Jesus Himself will rule our earth from the city of Jerusalem in Israel.

Here are some of the things that will happen in this New Heaven and New Earth:

1. Our earth as we know it now and our atmospheric heaven will pass away. 

In its place we will get a new earth and a new atmospheric heaven. There will no longer be any more seas. With all of the sea waters taken out, we will have more land space to accommodate everyone.

 2. There will no longer be any more night. It will be daylight all the time. There will no longer be any sun or moon to shine their light. The Bible says that we will no longer have any need of the sun or the moon because the glory of God will now be illuminating the earth!

3. There will no longer be any more death. The curse of Adam and Eve will finally be broken and completely done away with.

   (In the Millennial Kingdom, there is still going to be physical death for those humans who survive the Tribulation and enter into it physically. Though many of them will live long lives, they are still going to have to physically die.)

In addition to any kind of death being taken out, there will also be no more pain since we will all have brand new, glorified, spiritual bodies. The Bible says that all sorrow, pain, crying, and death will be fully taken away. Every tear will be wiped away.

There will be no more sickness or disease! Our new, glorified, spiritual bodies will no longer age, corrupt, die, or be subject to any kind of disease or illness ever again.

4. All things will be made brand new. Our imaginations can even begin to conjure up or imagine what this verse is trying to tell us.

5. God the Father Himself will come down to our earth to live and dwell with all of us forever and ever.

We will no longer need the temple that will be in Jerusalem, as both God the Father and Jesus Christ will now be the Temple Themselves!

The Bible says that the tabernacle of God will now be with men, that we will dwell with Him, that we will be His people, and that He will be our God forever and ever. 

6. Jesus will be ruling this entire earth from the city of Jerusalem. It will be God’s capital. However, in the New Heaven and New Earth, we will be getting a New Jerusalem.

The New Jerusalem coming down direct from heaven will be a square - its length will be as great as its width.

The Bible says that the tabernacle of God will now be with men, that we will dwell with Him, that we will be His people, and that He will be our God forever and ever. 

Bible scholars estimate that this city may literally be 1500 miles wide. It will be huge!

Its walls are constructed of jasper. The city will be pure gold like clear glass. The streets of this city will be pure gold.

The foundations of the walls will be adorned with all kinds of precious stones – the first foundation being jasper, the second sapphire, the third chalcedony, the fourth emerald, the fifth sardonyx, the sixth sardius.

The seventh foundation will be chrysolite, the eighth beryl, the ninth topaz, the tenth chrysoprase, the eleventh jacinth, and the twelfth amethyst. There are 12 foundations and each foundation is made with a different beautiful element. (Revelation 21:19-20).

There will be 12 gates, each gate being made of solid pearl. Each of the 12 gates will have an angel on it. There will be 3 gates each to the north, south, east, and west.

Since all of the bad and unsaved people will have already been taken out, there will be no one left that will be able enter into this holy city that will defile it, or cause any type of abomination in it. As a result, the gates to this holy city will always be open.

Summary

Our earth and heaven as we know it now will pass away. In its place we will be getting a New Heaven and a New Earth. There will be no more seas. (Revelation 21:1)

The tabernacle of God will be coming down from heaven to this new earth and God Himself will literally be dwelling with all of us. It says that He will be our God and that we will be His people.

God will wipe away every tear. There will be no more death, sorrow, crying, or pain ever again. All of the old and former things will now pass away. Now God will make everything completely brand new! (Revelation 21:3-5)

There will be no more temple because God and Jesus will now be the temple Themselves. We will no longer have the sun or moon because God Himself will be illuminating the earth with His glory. There will be no more night. The gates of the New Jerusalem will also be open to all of the nations. (Revelation 21: 22-27)

The curse from Adam will be no more. We shall be able to see the face of Jesus. We shall reign with God and Jesus forever and ever. (Revelation 22:3-5)

Conclusion

Things are going to get bad in the future, and possibly in the near future for all of us. Every Christian has to keep his eyes on the final end.

We will first be getting 1000 years of perfect peace in the Millennial Kingdom. Then we will receive the final and ultimate end which will be the New Heaven and New Earth – where God the Father Himself will come down to live with us forever and ever.

This New Heaven and New Earth is going to be beyond anything that our imaginations can even begin to conjure up. The Bible gives us only a partial vision and knowledge of what we are all going to end up with in this new heavenly environment.

The Bible tells us exactly what is in store for all of us in the future. When you put all of these verses together like you would pieces to a jigsaw puzzle, the knowledge and revelation comes through loud and clear.

Things are going to get bad, and really bad in the coming years!

God will win in the end. The Millennial Kingdom and the New Heaven and New Earth will be the final reward for all who hold fast to their faith in the Lord during these very trying times.

Keep your eyes on this final and glorious end with the New Heaven and New Earth.

Jesus has already told us in the Book of Revelation that the overcomers in this life will rule the nations of the world with Him in

these coming eras.

Do not ever lose sight of this fact if all of these end time events end up occurring in our lifetime.

Are you struggling with a big decision or wondering how your eternal future will play out?

Why not talk to the God of the universe and let Him work in your behalf?

He says, “I will instruct you and teach you the way you should go; I will counsel you with my eye upon you" (Psalm 32:8).

Ask God to show you what to do. Pray the following prayer:

“Heavenly Father,

I admit that I am a sinner and my sins have separated me from You. I now want to turn away from my past sinful life and begin a new life with You.

Please forgive me. I now receive your Son, Jesus Christ as my Savior, my Master and my Lord. I believe and confess that Jesus Christ died for my sins, was buried, and rose from the dead.

I want to receive all that Jesus Christ has provided for me as my Savior. Your Word says, ‘Whosoever shall call on the name of the Lord shall be saved’ (Romans 10:13).

I believe and confess that Jesus Christ is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and no man comes unto the Father, but by Him.

Lord Jesus, I pray and ask You, to come into my heart and be Lord of my life. I thank You that you have given me eternal life, and according to Your Word, I am born again.

Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of the Holy Spirit Who is in me now. I surrender my life to You. I promise to study Your Word – the Bible.

Use me for Your glory.

In Jesus’ Name. Amen.”
