ON WINGS OF EAGLES - All other birds carry their young in their claws because they are afraid of high-flying predators that soar above them. But no bird flies higher than the eagle. The eagle only has to worry about men below. So it puts its young on its wings. The eagle places itself between its young and any danger. If anyone wants to take a shot from below, they will have to deal with the eagle first. Like an eagle, no one is higher than God. And like an eagle, He protects His children with love. - “You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.” Between June 1949 and September 1950, Israel ran a secret operation known as Operation Magic Carpet. During that time, 380 flights were made between Yemen and Israel, rescuing more than 49,000 Jews from Arab countries where they were being oppressed. When the Jews being rescued boarded the planes that would airlift them to Israel, they were sure that the Messiah had come. They had never seen planes before, and to them, these were the “eagles” prophesized about in the book of Isaiah: “They will soar on wings like eagles.” To the Jews of Yemen, those airplanes were God’s eagles that would carry them home. The Jews of Yemen weren’t completely wrong. Although they were still waiting for the Messiah, they were experiencing the miracles foretold by the prophets. The Jewish people were on their way home, and like eagles, they took flight.

Holy Land Moments

With Yael Eckstein

“You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.” — Exodus 19:4

Between June 1949 and September 1950, Israel ran a secret operation known as Operation Magic Carpet.

During that time, 380 flights were made between Yemen and Israel, rescuing more than 49,000 Jews from Arab countries where they were being oppressed.

When the Jews being rescued boarded the planes that would airlift them to Israel, they were sure that the Messiah had come.

They had never seen planes before, and to them, these were the “eagles” prophesized about in the book of Isaiah: “They will soar on wings like eagles” (Isaiah 40:31).

To the Jews of Yemen, those airplanes were God’s eagles that would carry them home.

And that’s how Operation Magic Carpet became more popularly known as Operation Wings of Eagles.

The Jews of Yemen weren’t completely wrong.

Although they were still waiting for the Messiah, they were experiencing the miracles foretold by the prophets.

The Jewish people were on their way home, and like eagles, they took flight.

The children of Israel who left Egypt for Israel went on “eagles’ wings,” too.

In these verses from Exodus chapter 19, God told them, “You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself.” — Exodus 19:4.

The children of Israel certainly didn’t fly on airplanes, so just what did God mean?

The Jewish sages explain that all other birds carry their young in their claws because they are afraid of high-flying predators that soar above them.

When God took the children of Israel out of Egypt, He placed the “Pillar of Cloud” between them and the Egyptians.

The Egyptians would have to get through the cloud if they wanted to reach the Israelites.

But God would not let them. He miraculously kept them safe from harm.

Today, God continues to bring His people back to their ancient homeland.

And He continues to do this “on wings of eagles” – with miracles, compassion, and love.

Here at The Fellowship we are part of that miracle, together with our Christian friends around the world.

Our aptly named ministry, On Wings of Eagles, helps needy and persecuted Jews around the world come home to Israel and create a new life.

DINOSAUR EGGS NOT BIRD-LIKE AFTER ALL - Mainstream secular science is trying to make dinosaurs into warm-blooded animals because they are trying to make them the evolutionary ancestors of birds. They need dinosaurs to be warm-blooded if they are going to argue ancestry between the two animal groups. It is difficult to have a warm-blooded descendant from a cold-blooded ancestor - mounting evidence continues to show that dinosaurs are less like birds and much more like modern reptiles. The Bible says that God created each animal to reproduce after their kind. And science again demonstrates that birds and dinosaurs represent two completely different creature kinds. Prevailing secular theory considers birds to be living dinosaurs, but new science is hatching to support the stark differences between these creatures. The data demonstrate dinosaurs were more likely cold-blooded like all modern reptiles. Dr. Gregory Erickson of Florida State University and his colleagues from the University of Calgary and the American Museum of Natural History recently published their findings on dinosaur incubation periods in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. They found that dinosaur eggs took roughly twice as long to hatch as comparable bird eggs. How did they determine the exact incubation times? The team discovered that embryonic dinosaurs had incremental layers of von Ebner gland protein in their developing teeth that formed growth lines, much like tree rings. But these rings developed during diurnal pulses of mineralization, giving a record of daily growth. These same teeth growth lines are present in today's reptiles and mammals but were never known from dinosaur fossils prior to this Erickson study.

The scientists merely counted the growth lines in the fossil teeth to determine embryonic age, conducting their research on two species of dinosaur, Protoceratops andrewsi (a frilled dinosaur) and Hypacrosaurus stebingeri (a duckbill variety).

It has long been known that "In reptiles incubation is slow, whereas in birds it is remarkably rapid."

Because many secular scientists assume dinosaurs are similar to extinct birds, they readily infer dinosaurs also had rapid incubation periods.

These recent findings surprised the scientists. "Our results show unexpectedly slow incubation (2.8 and 5.8 mo[nths]) like those of outgroup reptiles."

If these dinosaurs were truly bird-like, they should have had incubation periods of about 40 days for Protoceratops and 82 days for Hypacrosaurus.

But the research team's results calculate out at 83 days and 171 days, respectively — over twice as slow as predicted.

Why was this so shocking? Because most secular scientists assume dinosaurs were warm-blooded like today's birds.

And they go so far as to say that dinosaurs are, in fact, birds.

"Birds stand out from other egg-laying amniotes [like reptiles] by producing relatively small numbers of large eggs with very short incubation periods (average 11-85 d[ays])."

In contrast, dinosaurs have been known since the 1920s to typically lay clutches of about 20-30 eggs — a number more in line with modern reptiles — far more than most modern birds.

And now we see that dinosaurs had long incubation periods, again quite unlike birds.

This latest embryonic research shows that dinosaurs are really more like modern reptiles, having a slower embryonic metabolism than birds.

And yet, the authors of this PNAS article seemed to completely side-step the metabolic implications for this discovery.

The scientific case for warm-blooded dinosaurs is not nearly as strong as many believe — the mounting evidence continues to show that dinosaurs are less like birds and much more like modern reptiles.

The conclusion I made in my book is further bolstered by this new research:

The unwritten side to this metabolism debate is what is truly fascinating. It is actually a war of worldviews.

Mainstream, secular science is trying to make dinosaurs into warm-blooded animals because they are trying to make them the evolutionary ancestors of birds.

They need dinosaurs to be warm-blooded if they are going to argue ancestry between the two animal groups. It is difficult to have a warm-blooded descendant from a cold-blooded ancestor.

The Bible says that God created each animal to reproduce after their kind.

And science again demonstrates that birds and dinosaurs represent two completely different creature kinds.

WANDERING ALBATROSS - Wide Wings on the Winds - With a wingspan of over three meters — the largest of any bird alive today — the wandering albatross can fly thousands of miles, even around the world, gliding for long periods in search of fish or squid. Due to their long wings, taking off from the sea surface is by far their most energetically demanding activity, requiring four times more energy than gliding flight. Since albatrosses are heavy birds, aerodynamic efficiency is even more critical to their success when flying over oceans. So, it is not surprising that God has providentially equipped them with continuous environmental tracking systems that adjust flight decision-making to current meteorological conditions, especially wind speeds and wind patterns. Wandering albatrosses have the largest wingspan of any living bird, so they live much of life soaring above the oceans. With their wings — and a lot of winds — it is no wonder that their use of wind-power would be studied by scientists, as a recent report illustrates. And, because albatross males are bigger, they need more wind. Wind plays a bigger role in their decision to take flight than previously thought, and due to their differences in body size (males are 20% bigger than females), males and females differ in their response to wind. So, it is not surprising that God has providentially equipped them with continuous environmental tracking systems that adjust flight decision-making to current meteorological conditions, especially wind speeds and wind patterns.

BY JAMES J. S. JOHNSON, J.D., TH.D.

A new study of albatrosses has found that wind plays a bigger role in their decision to take flight than previously thought, and due to their differences in body size (males are 20% bigger than females), males and females differ in their response to wind.

With a wingspan of over three meters (about 9 feet!) — the largest of any bird alive today — the wandering albatross [Diomedea exulans] can fly thousands of miles, even around the world, gliding for long periods in search of fish or squid.

Birds search for prey in flight and capture it after landing on the sea surface.

Due to their long wings, taking off from the sea surface is by far their most energetically demanding activity, requiring four times more energy than gliding flight.

The recent 7-year-long study was published in the Journal of Animal Ecology on June 19, 2020.

That day is the inaugural “World Albatross Day,” a new conservationist holiday invented to promote awareness and concern for albatrosses of the world.

We have demonstrated in a soaring seabird that behaviour is adjusted flexibly to wind conditions, and that due to differences in flight morphology, males were more likely to modulate flight decisions to wind than females.

Their reliance on stronger winds for energyefficient flight may also explain the preference of males for windier habitats … where the greater availability of oceanic habitat promotes segregation between the sexes.

Because birds are heavier than air, they must practice successful aerodynamic take-off and flight movements to fly.

Large soaring birds are particularly welladapted to exploit a dynamic airspace, extracting kinetic energy from wind for soaring–gliding flight.

This substantially reduces time spent flapping, which is metabolically costly compared with gliding.

Their large wingspans and high wing loading (mass per unit wing area) enable rapid flight speeds through the air, and some species, particularly seabirds, travel vast distances in search of patchily distributed prey.

However, unfavourable or unpredictable winds can increase time and energy costs of movement.

Activities such as takingoff, which requires intense flapping flight, are energetically demanding in windless conditions, so individuals … modulate decisionmaking so that these activities are assisted by wind.

Accordingly, the research team investigated and quantified how male and female albatrosses make use of winds at sea.

Using GPS loggers, researchers tracked the flight patterns of over 300 albatrosses from two major populations in the Southern Ocean, one of the windiest areas on the planet.

By combining tracking data with computer modelling, they found that the seabirds wait on the sea surface for winds to pick up before attempting to fly again.

They also found that males, which are 20% bigger than females, wait for stronger winds to help them take off from the ocean surface and sustain their flight.

The study results were due to the “sexual dimorphism” of the albatrosses.

This is just a fancy way of saying that the birds’ physical appearances (in this case, relative physical size) differ according to sex.

University of Liverpool seabird ecologist and lead author of the study, Dr Tommy Clay, said: “Albatrosses are the oceans’ great voyagers and are well-known for their ability to glide on winds with barely a flap of their wings. Our study reveals that albatross behaviour is fine-tuned to the winds they encounter. In order to save energy, birds rely on strong winds for take-off, males more so than females.”

Specific findings included quantification of albatross flight decision-making (such as whether to rest in ocean water, versus take off for above-ocean soaring to forage for food), correlated to weather conditions, especially wind speeds.

Of course, the idea that heavy birds efficiently utilize air currents for launching into the sky, in order to minimize the energy spent getting aloft, in not new.

Even the Old Testament in Job 39:26-27 illustrates awareness of that ecological fact of avian life.

Rising hot-air currents routinely blow in from south of Israel, so hawks can “catch a ride” simply by stretching out their wings southward, just as sailors harness wind to power boats at sea.

Gliding and soaring on extended wings reduces air resistance as well as the hawk’s need to burn energy by flapping.

Likewise, when God commands wind to blow, eagles can “mount up” (literally, “cause to fly”) upon rising thermal air currents — as if they were elevators — and glide almost effortlessly until they spy food far below with their super-powerful distance vision.

Whether you observe an albatross near the Antarctic, or an Iceland Gull near the Arctic, the flight of birds is a marvelous display of God’s avian aero-engineering.
