GOD MOVES FOR US - Faith and obedience please God, and then God moves for us! A demonstration of faith will produce a God-sized result, and a God-sized result is greater than anything we could do on our own. When we are facing monumental situations in our lives, these examples from scripture remind us to stand firm in our faith, walk diligently in obedience, and fully trust that God is going to move on our behalf. - “But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. ~ Hebrews 11:6 - As I’ve been learning to walk by faith and obedience in my relationship with God, my examples have been many of the people in the Bible who exemplify what happens when we make a move of faith — God then moves for us. What do I mean by that? When we answer a call to faith and step out and make a move to demonstrate our faith, then God shows up. And when He moves, He does the supernatural. In Joshua 6, Joshua and the Israelites faithfully and obediently marched around the Jericho wall shouting and blowing their trumpets, and the wall fell flat. The wall that was wide enough for two chariots to pass on its top fell flat. No one blew it up — they blew trumpets. In 1 Samuel 17, David took a slingshot and five stones, and God sent that first stone in a deadly hurl straight into Goliath’s head. David didn’t have a super bionic arm. He had faith in an all-powerful God.

“But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him. ~ Hebrews 11:6

As I’ve been learning to walk by faith and obedience in my relationship with God, my examples have been many of the people in the Bible who exemplify what happens when we make a move of faith — God then moves for us.

In Judges 7, God told Gideon to downsize his army and gave him instructions on how to do so.

Gideon had obeyed God’s directive and started with an army of thirty two thousand, but God said, tell the ones who are afraid that they may leave, and the numbers quickly dropped to ten thousand.

Then God said, that’s still too many, and He dropped the numbers again to three hundred with a water-lapping test.

With these three hundred remaining men, the battle was won — with trumpets, pitchers, and torches, not traditional weapons of war!

These are only a few instances of many we read in the Bible, but the lesson is clear in all of them.

Faith and obedience please God, and then God moves for us!

As an inspirational writer I love to write about building our relationship with God, growing a strong faith walk, and living in the benefits of His abundant love, mercy, and grace in our everyday life.

For more than a decade I was a freelance writer in the Christian market for multiple publishers of Christian resources and publications.  I have written two devotional books.  First Breath of Morning: Where God Waits for You Every Day and CLAY: Reflections on the Life God Is Shaping in Us.

The devotions in First Breath of Morning have an emphasis on building our relationship with God through drawing near and getting to know Him and strengthening our faith as we grow a deeper walk with Him.

The devotions in CLAY reveal more vividly how our relationship with God is lived out as we grow and are changed by Him through His work in our lives and through our circumstances.

I have also written a short eBook called The Hope Collection: Portraying the Hope We Have in God, written for those who need a fresh dose of encouragement for whatever you are struggling with today. The inspirational messages in these 40 devotions will lift you up and give you hope for tomorrow as they portray the hope we have in God.

THE BIBLE’S BURIED SECRETS - Just as the discovery of the Dead Sea scrolls substantiated the accuracy of Old Testament writings, such as the book of Isaiah, other archaeological discoveries like the clay shard in Khirbet Qeiyafa are adding to the compelling case for the reliability of the Old Testament. And although a few scholars question Jesus’ existence, no great historian, Christian or non-Christian has drawn that conclusion. Yet as the evidence is discovered, the reliability of the New Testament continues to confound its skeptics - Has the discovery of an ancient pottery shard in excavations near Jerusalem, undone the sensational claims of a PBS documentary entitled, “The Bible’s Buried Secrets”? In that documentary, PBS shockingly concludes that the Hebrew Bible was written hundreds of years after Abraham, Moses, Joshua, and David. It cites scholars who state that the Bible couldn’t have been written until the 6th century BC because the Hebrew language hadn’t been developed until then. According to PBS, the late writing of the Bible means that the entire Old Testament is based on centuries of oral tradition that changed over time. Therefore, according to the documentary, the Bible’s stories are simply myths. As examples, it concludes: Abraham, Sarah and their offspring didn’t exist. There is no archaeological evidence of the Exodus. Monotheism was a process that took hundreds of years. But have the PBS documentary’s conclusions about the Bible been exposed as faulty by this new archaeological discovery? According to Hebrew expert, Professor, Gershon Galil of the Haifa University, the answer appears to be yes.

Has the discovery of an ancient pottery shard in excavations near Jerusalem, undone the sensational claims of a PBS documentary entitled, “The Bible’s Buried Secrets”?

In that documentary, PBS shockingly concludes that the Hebrew Bible was written hundreds of years after Abraham, Moses, Joshua, and David.

It cites scholars who state that the Bible couldn’t have been written until the 6th century BC because the Hebrew language hadn’t been developed until then.

So, what’s the big deal about that, you might ask?

According to PBS, the late writing of the Bible means that the entire Old Testament is based on centuries of oral tradition that changed over time.

Therefore, according to the documentary, the Bible’s stories are simply myths. As examples, it concludes:

• Abraham, Sarah and their offspring didn’t exist.

• There is no archaeological evidence of the Exodus.

• Monotheism was a process that took hundreds of years.

But have the PBS documentary’s conclusions about the Bible been exposed as faulty by this new archaeological discovery?

According to Hebrew expert, Professor, Gershon Galil of the Haifa University, the answer appears to be yes.

On January 7th, 2009, Professor Galil publicly announced that he had deciphered a Hebrew inscription from a 15 cm X 16.5 cm trapezoid pottery shard carbon-dated to the 10th century BC, the time of King David.

The shard had been discovered earlier at an excavation in Khirbet Qeiyafa, 18 miles from Jerusalem.

Galil discovered that the inscription on the 3,000-year-old piece of pottery was inked in Hebrew, the language of the Bible.

As a result, he has since concluded that parts of the Bible were written hundreds of years earlier than suspected by the PBS documentary.

Galil writes,

“It can now be maintained that it was highly reasonable that during the 10th century BCE, during the reign of King David, there were scribes in Israel who were able to write literary texts and complex historiographies such as the books of Judges and Samuel.”

Just as the discovery of the Dead Sea scrolls substantiated the accuracy of Old Testament writings, such as the book of Isaiah, other archaeological discoveries like the clay shard in Khirbet Qeiyafa are adding to the compelling case for the reliability of the Old Testament.

Is The New Testament Reliable?

A host of scholars have also attacked the reliability of the New Testament accounts. Some go so far as to state that Jesus himself was a mythical person.

And although a few scholars question Jesus’ existence, no great historian, Christian or non-Christian has drawn that conclusion.

As with the Old Testament, attacks on the historical reliability of the New Testament have been rampant.

Yet as the evidence is discovered, the reliability of the New Testament continues to confound its skeptics:

• Jesus’ Family Tomb: A Discovery Channel documentary entitled, “The Jesus Family Tomb” speculated that the bones of Jesus had been discovered in a Jerusalem family tomb. If true, it would undermine the entire Christian message of Jesus’ resurrection. But the documentary distorted the evidence to the disdain of scholars.

(see “Jesus Family Tomb”)

• Nazareth: Several New Testament critics argued that the town of Nazareth didn’t exist at the time of Jesus. This assertion was argued in a book published by American Atheist Publishing. However, a 2009 archaeological discovery confirms that Jesus’ hometown of Nazareth did exist in the first century.

(see “Was Jesus Really From Nazareth?”)

• New Testament Documents: German higher critics of the New Testament and other liberal scholars have argued that its books weren’t written during the apostles’ lifetimes. If true, they couldn’t have been eyewitness accounts. However, textual critics have a wealth of manuscripts that support its early writing.

(see, “Are the Gospels Reliable?” )

• Archaeological Confirmation: Several skeptics pointed out that the names of key New Testament people hadn’t been discovered in archaeological excavations. They cited the lack of such facts as evidence that the New Testament accounts were invented. However, in 1962 archaeologists discovered an ancient stone inscribed with the name of “Pilate”, the governor of Judea who tried Jesus. And in 1990, the name of the Chief Priest, Caiaphas, was discovered on an ossuary.

Criticism of both the Old and New Testaments will certainly continue. Part of the reason for that is because there is so much at stake; the Bible speaks about our origin and our purpose.

However, both sides of the historicity of the Bible should listen to what the evidence says.

The discovery at Khirbet Qeiyafa is just one more piece of evidence supporting the case for biblical reliability.

Who was the real Jesus Christ?

Is it possible to view Jesus as simply a great moral teacher?

Oxford scholar, C.S. Lewis originally thought Jesus was a myth.

Then he investigated the evidence, and was astounded by Jesus’ radical claims.

Lewis believed that Jesus claimed to be God in the flesh.

Who did this great scholar decide Jesus Christ really was?

“So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife; and when he went in to her, the Lord gave her conception, and she bore a son.

“Then the women said to Naomi, ‘Blessed be the Lord, who has not left you this day without a close relative; and may his name be famous in Israel! And may he be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age; for your daughter-in-law, who loves you, who is better to you than seven sons, has borne him.’

“’Then Naomi took the child and laid him on her bosom, and became a nurse to him. Also the neighbor women gave him a name, saying, ‘There is a son born to Naomi.’

“And they called his name Obed. He is the father of Jesse, the father of David.” - Ruth 4:14-17

The story of Ruth expresses the heart of God for all His children — He is the God of redemption, restoration and grace.

He desires to fill all the empty places in our lives.

As we celebrate Mother’s Day this month, we can all be grateful for the mothers who gave us life.

But for some the day may be bittersweet, perhaps because of the loss a beloved mother or the loss of children.

Naomi was very familiar with loss. She had lost her husband and her two sons while dwelling in Moab, where her family had fled due to a famine in Bethlehem.

There, in a land not her own, Naomi cried, "Do not call me Naomi (which means pleasant); Call me Mara (which means bitter), for the Almighty has dealt very bitterly with me. I went away full, and the LORD has brought me back empty.” (Ruth 1:20-21a)

Her heart was broken and filled with grief from the loss of family. But little did she know that, in the midst of her bitterness, God was planning her fulfillment and restoration.

When Naomi heard that the Lord had provided food for his people, she decided to return home with Ruth and Orpah, the women her sons married while in Moab.

On the journey home, Naomi insists that the women return to their homeland and their families.

Orpah went back, but Ruth would not be separated from her mother-in-law, saying, “Your people will be my people and your God my God.”

In her unmatched loyalty to Naomi, Ruth the Moabite chose the God of Israel, through whom she came to find much grace. In finding that grace, Ruth was blessed and became a great blessing!

Ruth and Naomi arrive in Bethlehem as the barley harvest was beginning. This would have been during Passover, Israel’s constant reminder and promise of God’s redemption.

Ruth said to Noami, "Let me go to the fields and pick up the leftover grain behind anyone in whose eyes I find favor."

Ruth indeed found favor, as she was led by grace to the field of Boaz, who turns out to be a close relative — a “kinsman redeemer” of Naomi’s family.

Boaz treats Ruth with abundant kindness, allowing her to glean in his fields freely and without fear of harm.

Naomi directs Ruth, in the custom of the day, to humbly go and present herself to Boaz. She does this by lying at his feet during the night.

When Boaz awakens, Ruth requests that he spread the corner of his garment over her.

This was a culturally relevant way to say, “I am a widow. Take me as your wife and fulfill your role as kinsman redeemer.”

The years of bitterness and loss came to an end for Naomi! Through grace Ruth meets Boaz (her kinsman redeemer), and they are married and have a child named Obed.

This child becomes the father of Jesse, the father of David, and in the lineage of Jesus Christ.

Naomi goes from empty to full as her family life is restored to her!

You may be able to relate to Naomi, having lost those dearest to you.

You may be grieving even as you read this.

God can turn things around for you.

He can restore all the years that were lost, bringing you into a place of fulfillment and blessing.
