WHEN WE DON’T UNDERSTAND WHAT GOD IS DOING - A God of infinite majesty can’t be measured. A God who unleashes miracles can’t be contained. A God whose love is eternal can’t be explained. God sees more than we can see. He knows more than we know. He works in ways beyond our comprehension. And if we agree to follow Him only when we understand what He’s doing, we’ll always stop short of experiencing His wonders. We can let the mystery of God bolster our doubt or buoy our wonder. When you feel anxious about what you don’t understand, praise God for who you know Him to be. - “As you do not know the way the spirit comes to the bones in the womb of a woman with child, so you do not know the work of God who makes everything.” - God, I can’t figure out what You’re doing!” I cried after receiving a discouraging phone call on my drive home from the grocery store. God had invited me to trade my plans for His. He had whispered a promise to my heart and confirmed it through His Word, wise counsel and prayer. Believing His promise demanded faith, I had said “yes” and followed in obedience. At first, following God’s plan felt exhilarating. My prayer journal read like a grand tale of God’s greatness. Then, the journey began to look different than I’d imagined. The road was filled with more potholes than I’d anticipated, and as I let God direct my steps, it seemed He was leading me to the middle of nowhere, rather than in the direction of a promise fulfilled.

When We Don’t Understand What God is Doing

A God of infinite majesty can’t be measured. A God who unleashes miracles can’t be contained. A God whose love is eternal can’t be explained.

.

God sees more than we can see. He knows more than we know. He works in ways beyond our comprehension. And if we agree to follow Him only when we understand what He’s doing, we’ll always stop short of experiencing His inexplicable wonders.

.

We can let the mystery of God bolster our doubt or buoy our wonder. When you feel anxious about what you don’t understand today, praise God for who you know Him to be.

Alicia Bruxvoort

“As you do not know the way the spirit comes to the bones in the womb of a woman with child, so you do not know the work of God who makes everything.” - Ecclesiastes 11:5 (ESV)

God, I can’t figure out what You’re doing!”

I cried after receiving a discouraging phone call on my drive home from the grocery store.

Years before, God had invited me to trade my plans for His.

But then, the journey began to look different than I’d imagined.

The road was filled with more potholes than I’d anticipated, and as I let God direct my steps, it seemed He was leading me to the middle of nowhere, rather than in the direction of a promise fulfilled.

I didn’t doubt God’s presence, but I questioned His plans.

My enthusiasm waned. My confidence trembled.

On my good days, I felt optimistic and persistent.

On my bad days, I felt angry and confused. And on that evening when a phone call sunk my hope, I felt helpless and stuck.

Veering into an empty parking lot, I let my tears splatter onto the steering wheel. “Could You just show me what You’re doing, Lord?”

I begged.

I don’t know how long I sat there and waited for the Lord’s reply.

But I do know there was no flash of lightning illuminating God’s brilliant plan. No thundering voice explaining His mystifying methods.

Just a quiet thought impressed upon my haggard heart:

“Do you want a God you can explain or a God you can extol?”

Suddenly, through my haze of tears, I recognized an uncomfortable truth: A God of infinite majesty can’t be measured.

A God who unleashes miracles can’t be contained.

A God whose love is eternal can’t be explained.

Perhaps that’s why Ecclesiastes 11:5 reminds us: “As you do not know the way the spirit comes to the bones in the womb of a woman with child, so you do not know the work of God who makes everything.”

God sees more than we can see. He knows more than we know.

He works in ways beyond our comprehension. (Isaiah 55:8-11)

And if we agree to follow Him only when we understand what He’s doing, we’ll always stop short of experiencing His inexplicable wonders.

As I sat in that parking lot with a head full of questions and a heart frayed with disappointment, I realized we have a choice.

We can let the mystery of God bolster our doubt or buoy our wonder.

Abraham praised God beneath the stars — even though he didn’t understand how he’d ever become the father of nations.

David praised God in the wilderness — even though he didn’t understand why he was running for his life instead of sitting on the throne.

The Israelites praised God with a mighty shout — even though they didn’t understand Jericho’s wall would fall without a fight.

I began to praise God, too, because what I do know about Him is far more important than what I don’t:

I know God loves me, and He’ll never leave me. (John 3:16; Hebrews 13:5)

I know He is for me and not against me. (Romans 8:31)

I know God’s Word is true, and His heart is kind. (Psalm 33:4; Acts 14:17)

Lifting my head from the tear-stained steering wheel, I lifted my praises to heaven.

And gradually, my disappointments shriveled in the shadow of my swelling hope.

My tears dried, and I headed home.

Before me the road shimmered with an ethereal glow.

Above me, the sky melted into a stunning swirl of pink and orange. God was painting the sunset once again.

I don’t understand how He does it — scattering breathless beauty across the horizon every night — but I know this: It is wondrous. Just like He is.

Dear Jesus, You’ll never fit into my finite box of human understanding.

But You’ll always fulfill my infinite need for a Savior.

Give me faith to offer You praise even when I don’t understand Your ways.

In Jesus’ Name,

Amen.

WHERE IS REAL PEACE FOUND? - Peace is never found in trying to figure out the secret will of God. It’s not to be found in personal planning or attempts to control the circumstances and people in your life. Peace is found in trusting the person who controls all the things that you don’t understand and who knows no mystery because he has planned it all. How do you experience this remarkable peace — the kind of peace that doesn’t fade away when disappointments come, when people are difficult, or when circumstances are hard? You experience it by keeping your mind stayed on the Lord. The more you meditate on his glory, his power, his wisdom, his grace, his faithfulness, his righteousness, his patience, his zeal to redeem, and his commitment to his eternal promises to you, the more you can deal with mystery in your life. The One behind the mystery is gloriously good, worthy not only of your trust but also the worship of your heart. It really is true that peace in times of trouble is not found in figuring out your life, but in worship of the One who has everything figured out already. “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD GOD is an everlasting rock.” God is in control, and we really are at peace. We’re fully trusting the One who said, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

BY RANDY ALCORN

“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD GOD is an everlasting rock.” (verses 3-4)

Many thanks to those who have prayed for and left comments for Nanci and me after I shared about her then upcoming CT scan, which was done last Monday. At the follow up appointments, we received some challenging news about the results. Two different surgeons believe Nanci's cancer, which they saw no more sign of until recently, has spread to her lungs. (The suspicious spots can't be easily biopsied because they are too deep, and will need to be removed with surgery, and Nanci will probably need to go through more chemotherapy as well. You can read the full update on her CaringBridge page.)

While Nanci and I are disappointed, of course, we had talked beforehand and were prepared to accept this from the hand of a sovereign and loving God.

God is in control, and we really are at peace. We’re fully trusting the One who said, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world, you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world” (John 16:33, NIV).

Nanci and I have both found that great peace comes in meditating on the attributes of our God and His care for us.

Puritan Thomas Watson noted, “God the Father is called the ‘God of peace’ (Hebrews 13:20).

God the Son, the ‘Prince of peace (Isaiah 9:6).

God the Holy Ghost, the ‘Spirit… of peace (Ephesians 4:3).”

It’s really true that “The Lord gives strength to his people; the Lord blesses his people with peace” (Psalm 29:11, NIV).

A dear friend recently shared with us this excerpt from Paul David Tripp’s New Morning Mercies.

Paul’s words about how we can find peace really resonated with both Nanci and me.

These thoughts have been great for us right now, and are great for everyone facing challenging and uncertain circumstances:

Biblical literacy does not dispel all confusion and mystery from your life because while God reveals his will for you in the Bible, he does not reveal all the things he will do in your life for your good and his glory.

God surprises you.

So you ask, “Where is peace to be found?” This question is answered clearly and powerfully in Isaiah 26:

“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Trust in the LORD forever, for the LORD GOD is an everlasting rock. (verses 3-4)

This passage tells us where peace is found. It is never found in trying to figure out the secret will of God.

Why? Because you know the One behind the mystery is gloriously good, worthy not only of your trust but also the worship of your heart.

It really is true that peace in times of trouble is not found in figuring out your life, but in worship of the One who has everything figured out already.

Here are some more reflections from other Jesus followers about the peace Christ offers us:

“I know, perhaps as well as anyone, what depression means, and what it is to feel myself sinking lower and lower. Yet at the worst, when I reach the lowest depths, I have an inward peace which no pain or depression can in the least disturb. Trusting in Jesus Christ my Savior, there is still a blessed quietness in the deep caverns of my soul.” — Charles Spurgeon

“Just think: Every promise God has ever made finds its fulfillment in Jesus. God doesn’t just give us grace; he gives us Jesus, the Lord of grace. If it’s peace, it’s only found in Jesus, the Prince of Peace. Even life itself is found in the Resurrection and the Life. Christianity isn’t all that complicated… it’s Jesus.” — Joni Eareckson Tada

“There is no true or solid peace to be enjoyed in the world except in the way of reposing upon the promises of God.” — John Calvin

“All your security, freedom, rest, peace, and happiness consist in the goodness and love of your Maker towards you.” — Wilhelmus à Brakel

“Peace is not the absence of trouble but the presence of Christ.” Sheila Walsh

“Our Lord says to you, ‘Peace, child, peace. Relax. Let go. I will catch you. Do you trust me so little?’” — C. S. Lewis

“Jesus was napping in a boat when a storm came. Jesus’ friends, the disciples, woke him because they were terrified… Then Jesus looked out at the storm and said, ‘Peace, be still.’ And it was. … He didn’t say, ‘If you follow me, you’ll never have problems,’ because even Jesus faced big problems. … Jesus was always getting himself into trouble. Eventually he got killed. Peace doesn’t come from finding a lake with no storms. It comes from having Jesus in the boat.” — John Ortberg

WHO’S HOLDING YOU? - There are days when we don’t feel confident, and yet, we can be. There are days when we don’t feel like serving, and yet again, we can. Because of Who He is in our life and His indwelling presence residing in each of us, we can be more. We can do more. We can have more. It all starts with today. Day by day, step by step.. There is so much hurt and disappointment in the world today. So many people’s hearts are crying out for relief. Be encouraged that God Almighty, no matter what you are going through today, is holding you in the palm of His hands! GOD IS HOLDING YOU TODAY! “Thou art my servant; I have chosen thee, and not cast thee away. Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. Behold, all they that were incensed against thee shall be ashamed and confounded: they shall be as nothing; and they that strive with thee shall perish. Thou shalt seek them, and shalt not find them, even them that contended with thee: they that war against thee shall be as nothing, and as a thing of nought. For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.” - It is easy to go along with each day fulfilling the status quo. That’s the road most traveled for the majority. But, to dare to journey down another path, walking on the road less traveled takes courage that many are not yet ready to wield.

Who’s Holding You?

.

There are days when we don’t feel confident, and yet, we can be. There are days when we don’t feel like serving, and yet again, we can. Because of who He is in our life and His indwelling presence residing in each of us, we can be more. We can do more. We can have more. It all starts with today. Day by day, step by step. That’s all it takes.

Word For Life

There is so much hurt and disappointment in the world today.

So many people’s hearts are crying out for relief.

These verses were laid heavily on my heart to send out as a spiritual S.O.S. to someone somewhere.

I have clung to these in my own times of personal trial and I hope they help you also.

Be encouraged that God Almighty, no matter what you are going through today, is holding you in the palm of His hands!

“Thou art my servant; I have chosen thee, and not cast thee away. Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.

“Behold, all they that were incensed against thee shall be ashamed and confounded: they shall be as nothing; and they that strive with thee shall perish.

“Thou shalt seek them, and shalt not find them, even them that contended with thee: they that war against thee shall be as nothing, and as a thing of nought.

“For I the Lord thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.” - (Isaiah 41:9b-13).

GOD IS HOLDING YOU TODAY!

Have you ever awakened in the morning and think to yourself that today has to be different? The same old, same old isn’t going to cut it anymore. There’s a freshness in the soul that needs to be satisfied. There’s a longing that just won’t let go of the idea that there has got to be more to this life for me. It’s a stirring that is ready to step beyond the norm of the day to capture the essence of what we can be today.

It is easy to go along with each day fulfilling the status quo. That’s the road most traveled for the majority. But, to dare to journey down another path, walking on the road less traveled – to stretch oneself out of their comfort zone, and decidedly be more than the day before – takes courage that many are not yet ready to wield. “But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people . . .” (1 Peter 2:9a, KJV), in other words, you and I are called to live in a special way each and everyday. In a way that will “shew for the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light,” (1 Peter 2:9b, KJV).

We are not trying to do the impossible, but what we are doing is reclaiming today.

This online devotional seeks to help. Everyday is not the same. Everyday needs its own help to make it through, and prayerfully, by the grace of God, we will make it through. Start today! Take back today! What everybody else is doing is not okay for me. See what God’s “Word For Life Says. . .” to you today and get ready to make a change.
