by The Way

Have you seen the television commercials that show how a person can research their family history on the Internet with simply a few clicks of a button?

With the abundant resources online, even one bit of knowledge can lead to an exciting trail of discovery.

One man was surprised to learn that one of his ancestors lived next door to Orville and Wilbur Wright, those famous aviation pioneers!

While it may be interesting and even inspiring to search for one’s ancestral identity, there is even greater satisfaction in discovering our heritage as God’s children.

We can know who we are and what we have spiritually.

It is by God’s grace that we become His children.

When we are born again of God’s spirit, we receive the gift of Holy Spirit and have spiritual abilities that supersede our genetics, our education, and our experiences.

The record of God’s Word shows our spiritual background — from “dead in trespasses and sins” to “quickened… together with Christ.”

It shows a past of walking “according to the course of this world” and a life now of walking God’s way, “in the power of his might.”

We see our past in Ephesians 2:1-3:

“And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins;

“Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of disobedience:

“Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others.”

Ephesians goes on to show us the life we have now, since we’re born again.

Ephesians 2:4-6,8:

“But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us,

“Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;)

“And hath raised us up together, and made us sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.

“For by grace are ye saved through faith [the faith of Jesus Christ]; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.”

When we are saved by grace, we receive the gift of Holy Spirit (Acts 2:38), which is “power from on high” (Luke 24:49).

Acts 1:8:

“But ye shall receive power [inherent spiritual ability], after that the Holy Ghost [holy spirit] is come upon you….”

Now we can walk each day with power. We have God’s grace to walk in the power of His might!

Ephesians 6:10:

“Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.”

We can be strengthened in the Lord and in the exerted power of His might. And in our walk for Him, we can minister grace to one another.

I Peter 4:10:

“As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.”

As born-again believers, we have the gift of Holy Spirit. God gave us this inherent spiritual ability, and now we are stewards of God’s grace.

We can be strong in the Lord and use our spiritual ability to minister God’s grace so that our heavenly Father gets the glory.

How electrifying it was to my soul when I learned from God’s Word that I was saved by His grace and could walk by the power of His might rather than my own.

There is much we can learn in the Word of God about who we are and what we have spiritually. It’s an exciting trail of discovery.

We will see that when we recognize the grace of God that is available to us, receive this grace into our lives, and decide to act upon it, we are men and women who walk by God’s mighty power!

Our lives reflect the brilliance of God’s power in action in the world.

In order to walk powerfully for God, we first need to recognize the grace of God that is available to us. Let’s go back to Ephesians 2.

Ephesians 2:8-10:

“For by grace are ye saved through faith [the faith of Jesus Christ]; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

“Not of works, lest any man should boast.

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.”

We are saved by God’s grace, not by our own doing, or our own works.

Through the accomplished works of Jesus Christ, God has made us His workmanship, His masterpiece.

What comes to mind when you think of a masterpiece in music, art, or film?

It’s likely that you think of its uniqueness, its value, or the wonderment of how it came to be.

This is true of us as His masterpiece as well. The Book of Romans teaches us more about the grace available to us.

Romans 5:8 and 17:

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

“For if by one man’s offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ.”

Here we see that an abundance of grace is available to us. And not only that, we can reign in life by Jesus Christ….

LOVE IS PATIENT - “Wedding vows are under a vicious attack.” 1 Corinthians 13, the famous love chapter in Scripture, begins its list of attributes with the words “love is patient.” For the Christian celebrating decades of marriage — or just getting married — it’s not about passion and romance; it’s about patience in sickness and health, in wealth and want, for better or for worse. No matter how horribly depressing and difficult things are, cling to God’s grace moment-by-moment - “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.” If you’re shopping for an anniversary this month, you’ll find a large selection of beautiful, expensive cards describing your spouse as the most virtuous, fault-free, brave, and lovely person on the planet. But the truth is — can I say this in print? — it’s often difficult to love your spouse. This is precisely why 1 Corinthians 13, the famous love chapter in Scripture, begins its list of attributes with the words “love is patient.” For the Christian celebrating decades of marriage — or just getting married — it’s not about passion and romance; it’s about patience in sickness and health, in wealth and want, for better or for worse. What’s more, in any relationship, God asks you to show patience with other’s shortcomings, to display mercy toward them, to release them from meeting all your righteous expectations, to bear with their weaknesses, and to not be itching to correct them.

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud.” - 1 Corinthians 13:4

If you’re shopping for an anniversary this month, you’ll find a large selection of beautiful, expensive cards describing your spouse as the most virtuous, fault-free, brave, and lovely person on the planet.
But the truth is — can I say this in print? — it’s often difficult to love your spouse.
This is precisely why 1 Corinthians 13, the famous love chapter in Scripture, begins its list of attributes with the words “love is patient.”
For the Christian celebrating decades of marriage — or just getting married — it’s not about passion and romance; it’s about patience in sickness and health, in wealth and want, for better or for worse.
What’s more, in any relationship, God asks you to show patience with other’s shortcomings, to display mercy toward them, to release them from meeting all your righteous expectations, to bear with their weaknesses, and to not be itching to correct them.
The fact is, when you love someone with patience, you love them as God loves you.
Lord Jesus, thank You for Your patient love for me through the years.
You love me when I am unlovable.
You watch over me when I am preoccupied with myself.
You forgive me when I commit the same old tiresome sins right after I have confessed them.
I don’t know how else to say it, but help me to love like You do.
Joni & Ken: An Untold Love Story
“No matter how horribly depressing and difficult things were, we clung to God’s grace moment-by-moment.” - Joni Eareckson Tada
Marriage and disability is no easy union. Approximately 90% of marriages affected by disability end in divorce, but after more than 30 years of marriage, Joni and Ken are breaking the odds. But that doesn’t mean Joni and Ken have not faced their fair share of troubles.
When Zondervan Publishing wanted Joni and Ken to write a book together and to call it Joni & Ken: An Untold Love Story, it was the first time Joni and Ken had ever written something together. Immediately they were motivated to share how God used their struggles against breast cancer, quadriplegia, depression, and chronic pain to deepen their intimacy with Him and with each other.
“Wedding vows are under a vicious attack.”
When asked “Why do you want to write this book?” Joni and Ken simply said: wedding vows are under a vicious attack today, and we want to help married couples grasp the sufficiency of Christ “in sickness and in health” and “for better or for worse.”
Joni & Ken: An Untold Love Story offers readers a rare and candid account of a marriage journey through quadriplegia, depression, pain, and cancer. The book is a testimony to all the grace and faithfulness found in God alone.
“Look, this is a book for guys; it’s a challenge to men to step up to the plate and make good on their vows.” - Ken Tada

GOD WROTE EVERY CHAPTER IN YOUR STORY - Just like with fictional characters, unexpected twists and turns and trials come into our lives, many of them being entirely out of our control. But the author always knows how the story is going to end before the characters do - We do not need to know everything we think we need to know. Thankfully I am not the author of my own personal story. Your story isn’t an autobiography either. Your story is a biography of wisdom and grace written by another. Every turn he writes into your story is right. Every twist of the plot is for the best. Every new character or unexpected event is a tool of his grace. Each new chapter advances his purpose. By God’s grace, I am learning that in these in-between chapters, character development takes place. He’s teaching me trust, patience, and how to wait on him through the unknown. Just like with fictional characters, unexpected twists and turns and trials come into our lives, many of them being entirely out of our control. When I fix my eyes back on Jesus, I recall that he is the author and finisher of my faith and will lead me to a beautiful destination — a destination that will bring him glory. I was always a curious child, and this curiosity gave birth to a bad reading habit.
When I was about a quarter of the way into a novel — about where I would start becoming invested in the characters — I would impatiently flip to the end of the book to find out how the story ends.
My eyes would quickly search for any clues that would reveal if the main characters would eventually survive or die, fall in love or find whatever it is they were searching for.
I wanted to know ahead of time how the mysteries would be solved, and if I could expect a happy ending or not.
After discovering how the story ended, I would flip back to where I left off. My curiosity assuaged, the anticipation gone.
How Will Your Story End?
I find that I do this less often with books now, but still attempt to treat life that way.
As a single woman at thirty, I wonder whether I will eventually get married, or if it is God’s will for me to remain single.
Not yet knowing the answer, I just want to flip to the right page to find out.
As my parents continue getting older, I wonder how much time I have left with them.
It would be great to know now if nonbelievers whom I love and have witnessed to for years will one day believe.
Prayer quotes:God is not punishing you, he us preparing you. Trust his plans not your pain.I find myself, like a detective, looking right and left for signs and clues for what will happen. How is this story going to end?
I just want to read the end of the book already, and avoid all of the in-between chapters that seem so long.
It’s as if, like Eve, I believe the enemy’s lie that God is withholding something from me that I “need.”
I need to know. I need just one bite. I need just one peek at the last few pages of the story.
The Point of Every Chapter
That’s not how it works, writes Paul Tripp. We do not need to know everything we think we need to know.
(New Morning Mercies)
By God’s grace, I am learning that in these in-between chapters, character development takes place.

The Author of Your Faith
When I fix my eyes back on Jesus, I recall that he is the author and finisher of my faith (Hebrews 12:2), and will lead me to a beautiful destination — a destination that will bring him glory.
I have no need to anxiously distrust him and fear what is written in my chapters ahead.
I can rely on his faithfulness as a Shepherd to guide me to the end.
I can depend on him, because I know that “for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28).
I desire to one day say with a thankful heart what John Piper once wrote: “In all these years, the grace of God had driven me deeper into God in desperation, rather than driving me away from God in anger” (Future Grace).
As my story continues, I want to testify through to the very last chapter that, even though impatience tried its best to take a hand at writing my story, all of the in-between chapters of waiting developed me and deepened my love and reliance for God, my Author.

CHRISTIANIZED KARMA - Unlike the Hindu system of karma and its effects, we know even our pain is used by a loving God - because of that, we have real hope for tomorrow – because our future doesn’t depend on us - no matter what trials we experience, we can rest in the knowledge that even when we are not good, God is - “…but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you…” Christians give really good hugs during trials and tragedy. The body of Christ has long arms to embrace those in need, easing the burdens of bad times. The church at work offers silent – and strong – evidence of grace when we pick each other up off the ground. Now, imagine for a moment that your community didn’t provide any support during a trial. Imagine that instead of offering encouraging words and providing meals or other support after a tragedy, the whole community pulled away. Imagine if they acted like you were a disease they didn’t want to catch while you shouldered the burden alone. And not only that -- they believed that your problems were your own fault, pure and simple. That’s karma at work. And it’s a lonely road. Christians rely on the promise that “all things work for the good of those who love God.” Like Job, we may never know the reason for our earthly suffering.

“… but sanctify Christ as Lord in your hearts, always being ready to make a defense to everyone who asks you to give an account for the hope that is in you…” – 1 Peter 3:15

Christians give really good hugs during trials and tragedy.
As my own family has experienced recently, the body of Christ has long arms to embrace those in need, easing the burdens of bad times.
♫ "Up from the grave he arose; with a mighty triumph o'er his foes; He arose a victor from the dark domain, and He lives forever, with His saints to reign. He arose! He arose! Hallelujah! Christ arose!." ♫The church at work offers silent – and strong – evidence of grace when we pick each other up off the ground.
A missionary couple recently visited our church before heading to London, where they planned settle in an immigrant community that’s mostly Hindu.
The wife expressed her desire to see people set free from the bonds of karma.
That caught my interest. I’d slipped into viewing karma through an Americanized lens, as a pseudo-Christian philosophy of reaping what you sow (Galatians 6:7).
Enlace permanente de imagen incrustadaFaithfulness and selfishness often have their rewards in this life, after all, and good deeds are often repaid with a smile and expression of gratitude if nothing else.
Karma may not be the full picture, but it seemed like an innocuous truism to me.
The missionary went on to describe the ugly side of karma, in which the community pulls away from its members who are suffering.
Lose a job? It’s a karmic effect – you must have cheated your employer or at least talked badly about him.
Did you – heaven forbid – lose a child? Somehow, that’s your fault too, as the universe balances out some evil you’ve done.
“But to the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep rejoicing, so that also at the revelation of His glory you may rejoice with exultation.” (1 Peter 4:13) “I conside…If such horrible things are somehow your fault, it would also make sense for people to pull away. That’s the bond of karma.
Christians rely on the promise that “all things work for the good of those who love God” (Romans 8:28).
We fight to believe that, while “no discipline seems pleasant at the time… later on it produces a harvest of righteousness” (Hebrews 12:11).

Like Job, we may never know the reason for our earthly suffering.
But we know that, because of grace, suffering is not a quid-pro-quo retaliation for our sins.
Even our suffering has been redeemed by God’s grace through Christ’s supreme act of love.
Intersecting Faith & Life: Unlike the Hindu system of karma and its effects, we know even our pain is used by a loving God.
Because of that, we have real hope for tomorrow – because our future doesn’t depend on us!
No matter what trials we experience, we can rest in the knowledge that even when we are not good, God is.
That’s mercy, and that gives hope.
Are you ready to give an answer for that hope?
