"And the house, when it was in building, was built of stone made ready before it was brought thither: so that there was neither hammer nor axe nor any tool of iron heard in the house, while it was in building." (1 Kings 6:7)

Here is a remarkable testimony to the engineering and construction skills of the ancients.

In order to erect the magnificent temple of Solomon, every portion was so carefully fabricated, far away from the construction site, that the building could be completely erected in reverent silence.

Furthermore, the stones were not small and rough. "They brought great stones, costly stones, and hewed stones, to lay the foundation of the house" (1 Kings 5:17).

They were quarried from limestone beds beneath the city and had to be fabricated and brought to the temple site, all ready to be laid in place.

"And Solomon's builders and Hiram's builders did hew them, and the stonesquarers" (1 Kings 5:18).

In both its unique beauty and its silent assemblage, the temple is a striking type of the spiritual temple now being erected by the Holy Spirit.

"Now therefore ye are . . . built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord; In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit" (Ephesians 2:19-22).

In this spiritual temple, each new believer is a costly stone, carefully cut from the world's dark quarry, then silently placed in the growing structure by the Holy Spirit on the foundation of Jesus Christ, "to whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house" (1 Peter 2:4-5).

"Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?" (1 Corinthians 3:16).

In our daily labors, we can catch a glimpse of the glory as we watch His image forming in ourselves and in those around us – but we can hardly begin to imagine the full splendor of His completed Bridal Temple! I'm sure there were times when the workers of Solomon's Temple felt weary after a long hard day of work – but those memories had to be completely erased when they finally beheld the Temple in its glory! So, if you're feeling weary and tired – just remember, you are building something magnificent, and the sacrifices of your labor today, will be returned a hundredfold by the generosity and joy of your Heavenly Bridegroom! “Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Can you imagine, as the Temple was under construction, what the craftsmen and the builders must have been thinking about this glorious house they were building?

Carpenters from Lebanon gathering cedar timbers, laborers moving building materials from Joppa, stonemasons cutting and honing stones – their imaginations must have been filled with expectation and wonder as the awesome heavenly plans given to King David materialized under their meticulous construction. 

Each of them had a part and a glimpse of its glory as he worked, waiting, anticipating... the final manifestation of the glory of the completed Temple!

Each of us is also a builder, but our building is a living Temple, and we are also living stones of this Temple of the living God.

“You come to him as living stones, a spiritual house that is being built into a holy priesthood” (1 Peter 2:5a GW).

God says that you are a priest. Depending on your background, that may be scary or confusing.

Peter is saying that the two benefits that priests have are now available to everyone who is a believer.

In the Old Testament, priests did two things:

1. They had the right, privilege, and responsibility to go directly to God. They could pray and talk to God, worship, and fellowship with God. Everybody else had to go through a priest.

2. The priest had the privilege and responsibility of representing God to the people and ministering to the needs of other people (serving).

Those are the very two things that are true of you when you become a believer.

You now have direct access to God.

You don’t have to pray through anybody else.

You don’t have to confess through anybody else.

You don’t have to fellowship with God through anybody else.

You can read your Bible, talk with the Lord, and fellowship directly with him.

The Bible says that when Jesus died on the cross, there was a veil in the Temple that separated the Holy of Holies, where God’s Spirit was, from where man was.

Only priests could go behind that veil once a year. When Jesus died on the cross, God ripped that veil — about 70 feet — from top to bottom, symbolizing that there is no longer a barrier.

You have also been gifted for ministry to serve other people.

Every Christian is a minister — not a pastor, but a minister.

Any time you use your talents and gifts to help others, you are ministering.

“It is he who saved us and chose us for his holy work not because we deserved it but because that was his plan long before the world began” (2 Timothy 1:9a TLB).

Why did God save you? So you could serve Him. A non-serving Christian is a contradiction.

How do you know what your ministry is? Look at your talents, gifts, and abilities.

When you use those talents and gifts to help other people, that’s called ministry — nothing fancy or scary about it. It’s just helping others.

Can you be a priest in a sales office? You bet you can.

Can you be a priest as an accountant? Of course.

Driving a truck? Sure.

Any time you’re helping other people in God’s name, you’re ministering.
