David fought a lion, a bear and a giant and he won
every time.
It all sounds rather extreme
until you add God into the equation.
David didn’t fight alone and
neither do you child of God.
We may live in peace where we
live but for the Christian there’s a constant war being waged.
The enemies of our soul, the devil and his army, our
old sinful nature, the allure of the world, they all come against us, each and
every day and the battle, although unseen, is real and fierce.
Paul tells us that…
‘we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against
principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this
world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.’
So how do we face these enemies?
In the same way that David did,
by acknowledging that…
‘the battle is the LORD’S,’
Friends, how easy it is for us to
go into battle in our own strength.
Just this last week I said
something I shouldn’t have said and then realised that I had fallen because I
wasn’t leaning on the Lord, I had, foolishly, thought I had learnt that lesson
and was trying to keep myself in my own strength and wisdom.
Friends, we CANNOT fight in our
own strength, the enemy IS greater than us BUT he’s not greater than CHRIST IN
US!
The ONLY way we can win is through Christ Jesus and
friends, this help isn’t something we can earn or ever deserve, it’s His free
gift, bought with the price of His own precious blood, the battle fought, the
victory won so that…
‘that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.’
We have to fight as David fought,
through Christ who, if you’re of His dear children, lives in you, and He’s in
you to help you….
‘Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of
hosts….’
That mountain of sin and guilt,
those temptations, all of those times that you’ve tried and failed Friend, it’s
not by might that we overcome, it’s not in our strength That we win, it’s by
the Spirit of Christ in us that we SHALL conquer…
‘Not by might, nor by power, but by my spirit, saith the LORD of
hosts. Who art thou, O great mountain? before Zerubbabel thou shalt become a
plain: and he shall bring forth the headstone thereof with shoutings, crying,
Grace, grace unto it.’
We can only win through Christ friends, it’s ALL of
His unending, free grace…
‘But thanks be to
God, which giveth us the victory THROUGH our Lord Jesus Christ.’
Those mountains of sin and guilt,
those giants of temptation, they cannot stand before Christ…
‘What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?
‘He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us
all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things.’
Friend,
He will, He’ll give you everything you need to fight and win the battle over
sin, if you’ll just trust Him and ask Him to help you, then through Him you
WILL conquer.
‘Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors THROUGH
him that loved us.
‘For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels,
nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come,
‘Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to
separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.’
Friends, let’s be asking God day after day to help us
pick up our swords, His word, and fight because the enemy CANNOT stand before
God’s word and the prize in this battle is your soul, so let the Saviour fight
for you.
Don’t try harder in your own
strength, instead, go forward, fighting only through the One who gives you and
is your strength.
