A Woman’s Worth
Ken
Weliever
Yesterday was
International Women’s Day. Their web site says it is “a global day celebrating
the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women.”
Their 2017 campaign theme
is #BeBoldForChange.
The ten values they claim
to espouse are: Justice. Dignity. Hope. Equality. Collaboration. Tenacity.
Appreciation. Respect. Empathy. And Forgiveness.
On the surface this all
sounds pretty good. However, much of what happened yesterday in the United
States had an underlying political agenda.
Marches and protests were
by many from the same group that marched on Washington the day after the
Presidential inauguration carrying obscene signs and shouting vulgar chants.
This group also promoted
“A Day Without Women” encouraging female workers to strike against their
employers.
This left several school
systems in at least 4 states in a bind and forced to close. It also left many
parents scrambling for day care for their children.
In addition, it was
apparent that many, if not most, in this movement were promoting abortion
rights.
My personal gratitude for
the worth of women begins with my late Mother, Mattie Weliever, and continues
with respect for my faithful, loving wife, Norma Jean.
Godly women have
encouraged me and added value to my life and ministry throughout the years.
So, I offer a tribute to
a woman’s worth based on Proverbs 31.
(1)
The worthy woman is priceless.
The wise man wrote that
her worth is “far above rubies.”
Our society often
measures value in terms of material things. But the noble character of God’s
woman is not determined by status, economic position or fashion.
Nor even physical
characteristics. “Charm is deceptive; and beauty is fleeting, but a woman
who fears the Lord she shall be praised” (verse 30).
(2)
The worthy woman is spiritually minded (verse 10).
She is called a woman of “noble
character.” This means virtuous or morally excellent. She possesses high
moral standards. She is not driven by the carnal values of a sensual society.
(3)
The worthy woman is committed to her family (verses 11-12).
This involves trust.
Helpfulness. And sacrifice. Her husband and her children can depend on her.
(4)
The worthy woman is a diligent worker (verses
13-19).
She is not lazy. And does
not “eat the bread of idleness.” She not only watches over her
household, but is involved in business and commerce.
(5)
The worthy woman possesses a compassionate heart (verse 20).
She cares for those less
fortunate. She has a generous spirit, a tender heart and selfless devotion to
the needs of others. Much in this world would not be accomplished without the
unselfish contributions of women.
(6)
The worthy woman provides wise counsel (verse
26).
As I think of Timothy’s
mother and grandmother who guided him during his formative years, I am reminded
of own mother whose godly wisdom shaped my values and gave me direction. Many
of us could echo the word of Abraham Lincoln who said, “All that I am or
ever hope to be I owe to my angel mother.”
(7)
The worthy woman receives a wonderful reward (verses 28-30).
Good men recognize and
honor the worth of a godly woman. Her husband, her children and those who
witness her works know she is to be praised. The legacy of God’s woman reaches
beyond this life into eternity.
So, while women march for
their “rights” and some dishonor their divine femininity, we call upon
righteous women to mold their lives after the model of the Proverbs 31 woman.
Be a woman of honor.
Nobility. Character. And spiritual worth.
And men, demonstrate to
these women your respect, admiration, and appreciation. They have earned it.
And they deserve it.
