He Took Our Place
The Lord Jesus took Abraham's place and accomplished
what Abraham could not -- establish an eternal, unbreakable covenant. When Jesus took
the "walk of death" in our place, He became the guarantee of God's
promises. He took Abraham's place to secure the blessings of the covenant, and
He took our place at Calvary to secure our salvation. This is the great
exchange: When we come to Him, we exchange our death for His life; our disease
for His healing; our weakness for His strength; and our brokenness for His
wholeness.

“On that same day the Lord made a
covenant with Abram, saying, ‘To your descendants I have given this land, from
the river of Egypt to the great Euphrates River.’”
-
Genesis 15:18
The Hebrew word for covenant literally
means "to cut in pieces."
The ceremony required an animal to be
sacrificed and cut in half.
The parties to the covenant then made
"the walk of death" in a figure-eight pattern between the cut pieces,
symbolizing total commitment to their covenant agreement.
The implications were clear: If a party
broke the covenant, they understood the penalty could only be paid with their
life.
As a result, the participants then no
longer lived for themselves alone, but as was necessary to uphold the covenant.
However, God knew Abraham could never keep
his part of the covenant, so the Lord caused a deep sleep to come upon him,
preventing him from walking through.
God walked "the walk of death"
alone, symbolizing that this covenant would only be upheld through His own
life.
Of course, the Lord Jesus took Abraham's
place and accomplished what Abraham could not -- establish an eternal,
unbreakable covenant (Genesis
15:18).
When Jesus took the "walk of
death" in our place, He became the guarantee of God's promises (Hebrews 7:22).
He took Abraham's place to secure the
blessings of the covenant, and He took our place at Calvary to secure our
salvation.
This is the great exchange: When we come to
Him, we exchange our death for His life; our disease for His healing; our
weakness for His strength; and our brokenness for His wholeness.
Lord Jesus, thank you for upholding your covenant with
me.
I know that devotion to you in covenant transcends all
other relationships, and I make you Lord of my life.
Help me live a life worthy of your sacrifice and by
your Spirit, enable me to live according to your word and your way!
Amen!
