OUR TIME IS SHORT, ETERNITY IS LONG - Our brief lives soon give way to eternal joy with Jesus - Every day that passes is God drawing the earth closer to its eventual and inevitable conclusion. And not only is this world finite, but our individual time on it is more limited still. Our life is like “mist,” here and then quickly gone. The Bible in fact repeatedly confronts us with the reality of our finitude. But the Bible never speaks of the brevity of our life just to make us feel sentimental, or morbidly focused on death, or to rob life right now of significance. In fact, quite the opposite is true. Our brief lives soon give way to eternal joy with Jesus. On one hand, death is “salvation” for believers in Christ! Our brief lives soon give way to eternal joy with Jesus. Every time we look in the mirror and see new wrinkles, or thinning hair, we should say to ourselves with a thrill in our voice, “My salvation is getting nearer!” The light of eternity shines through our temporary lives, infusing them with permanence and purpose! Living for Jesus Christ infuses our short, temporary lives with eternal significance.

Our brief lives soon give way to eternal joy with Jesus
Justin Huffman

“The appointed time has grown very short … For the present form of this world is passing away” (1 Corinthians 7:29, 31).

Image result for images Our Time Is Short, Eternity Is LongGod himself has set the bounds of this universe, and it will not last forever.
Therefore, every day that passes is God drawing the earth closer to its eventual and inevitable conclusion.
And not only is this world finite, but our individual time on it is more limited still.
As James reminds us, our life is like “mist,” here and then quickly gone.
The Bible in fact repeatedly confronts us with the reality of our finitude.
Image result for images Our Time Is Short, Eternity Is LongBut the Bible never speaks of the brevity of our life just to make us feel sentimental, or morbidly focused on death, or to rob life right now of significance.
In fact, quite the opposite is true.
Our brief lives soon give way to eternal joy with Jesus.
Paul writes in Romans 13:11, “The hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.”
On one hand, death is “salvation” for believers in Christ!
Our brief lives soon give way to eternal joy with Jesus.
Every time we look in the mirror and see new wrinkles, or thinning hair, we should say to ourselves with a thrill in our voice, “My salvation is getting nearer!”
Yet, the approach of death should still “wake” us out of a drowsy, sleep-walking way of living.
It should remind us that the light of eternity shines through our temporary lives, infusing them with permanence and purpose!
Living for Jesus Christ infuses our short, temporary lives with eternal significance.
What a bigness and richness this gives our seemingly little decisions, daily duties, and mundane tasks!
Every moment of waiting patiently for God, every sacrifice made in order to serve God, every labor expended in order to serve others in Jesus’ name — is a beam of God’s eternal glory breaking through into this temporary world.
We live our lives best when we live for eternity rather than for the temporary.
If you make your life all about chasing happiness, or avoiding pain, or getting more stuff — none of these can bear the weight of eternity.
We love our wife or husband best when we love them in light of eternity; we face grief best, and we enjoy joy the most, when we emote in light of eternity; we use material things best when we handle them in light of eternity.
None of these things are bad in and of themselves: marriage, or grief, or happiness, or possessions. But when anything temporary is made the foundation of your existence, your life will inevitably topple over in ruins.
Only the eternal kingdom of Christ is a strong enough foundation to hold everything else in your life up and in place.
Ultimately, life is not about being married or being single; it is not about seeking thrills or avoiding pain; it is not about obtaining things or giving up things.
It is about using the temporary gift of this life — with all its joys and sorrows and relationships and opportunities — to the glory of Jesus Christ.
Life is short! Every sunset is one less day we have here, so we dare not waste a single moment.
Yet, the light of eternity shines through our temporary lives on earth, each day that we live for Jesus Christ.

lyrics

Suntanned, windblown
Honeymooners at last alone
Feeling far above par
Oh, how lucky we are

While I give to you and you give to me
True love, true love
So on and on it will always be
True love, true love

For you and I have a guardian angel
On high, with nothing to do
But to give to you and to give to me
Love forever true

For you and I have a guardian angel
On high, with nothing to do
But to give to you and to give to me
Love forever true
Love forever true

BURN THE TAPE - Labels serve as traps and lock us within our beaten down comfort zones - To eliminate excuses from our lives we must first look at overcoming those voices of doubt that perhaps you have been told by people close to you that you couldn’t do something, you weren’t smart enough, or you didn’t have what it took to be successful. Thomas Edison, Winston Churchill, and Walt Disney all hurdled those same obstacles. Not only did Gideon save Israel they pleaded with him to become their king. We serve the God of the possible when we first scale our own walls. Jesus has much more for your life. As a result, you often fail to take the action necessary to achieve your goals and objectives that God has set up for you. If you don’t muster the courage to overcome the voices in your head, you will never really know what God is capable of. It’s not about you and your qualifications but simply your willingness to trust and obey. God has equipped you. You are good enough. God made you with a purpose. Stop holding yourself back.

Image result for Albert Einstein subnormalAlbert Einstein did not speak until he was 4-years-old and did not read until he was 7.
His parents thought he was “sub-normal,” and one of his teachers described him as “mentally slow, unsociable, and adrift forever in foolish dreams.”
He was expelled from school and was refused admittance to the Zurich Polytechnic School.
He did eventually learn to speak, read, and even do a little math but first he had to overcome the lies that he was told.
“Pardon me, my lord,” Gideon replied, “but how can I save Israel? My clan is the weakest in Manasseh, and I am the least in my family.” — Judges 6:15
Do you hear that recording of doubt replaying over and over in Gideon’s head?  “I’m from the weakest family in the smallest clan”“I’m too small for the job”“Why are you picking on me Lord?”
Gideon must have heard growing up that his family was labeled as being weak, small in number, and thus he was not going to amount to much.
To eliminate excuses from our lives we must first look at overcoming those voices of doubt that perhaps you have been told by people close to you that you couldn’t do something, you weren’t smart enough, or you didn’t have what it took to be successful.
Thomas Edison, Winston Churchill, and Walt Disney all hurdled those same obstacles.
We see later that not only did Gideon save Israel they pleaded with him to become their king. We serve the God of the possible when we first scale our own walls.
Jesus has much more for your life – burn the tape.
Labels serve as traps and lock us within our beaten down comfort zones.
As a result, you work within a smaller box and often fail to take the action necessary to achieve your goals and objectives that God has set up for you.
If you don’t muster the courage to overcome the voices in your head, you will never really know what God is capable of.
It’s not about you and your qualifications but simply your willingness to trust and obey.
God has equipped you. You are good enough. God made you with a purpose. Stop holding yourself back. Burn the tape – no more excuses.

EATING AND LEFTOVERS - Why the connection between Jesus and 'the leftovers' and why does the modern church not have the same relationships? – Jesus irritated the religious gatekeepers repeatedly because he fellowshipped, ate, and drank with those they considered marginal, unworthy, and sinful. They were the unwanted and undeserving leftovers of their religious society. These leftovers, however, were precious to Jesus. Jesus called them the last, the lost, and the least, who in his kingdom are now the first, the found, and the greatest. Look around the Lord's Table that we now share. Do you see many of the last, the lost, and the least? How many of the leftovers do you find at your holy meal? If you have a few of these precious leftovers, then give thanks. Many of our churches, small groups, and missional communities have people that look like us. We don't see many we might call the loose lug nuts and leftovers of society.

Eating and Leftovers
Why the connection between Jesus and 'the leftovers' and why does the modern church not have the same relationships?
by Phil Ware
Beyond Bread and Wine

Scripture:
“Once again Jesus went out beside the lake. A large crowd came to him, and he began to teach them. As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector's booth. ‘Follow me,’ Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him.
“While Jesus was having dinner at Levi's house, many tax collectors and sinners were eating with him and his disciples, for there were many who followed him. When the teachers of the law who were Pharisees saw him eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they asked his disciples: ‘Why does he eat with tax collectors and sinners?’
“On hearing this, Jesus said to them, ‘It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners’" (Mark 2:13-17).
Reflection:
Jesus irritated the religious gatekeepers repeatedly because he fellowshipped (Mark 2:13-17), ate (Luke 19:1-10), and drank (Matthew 11:18-19) with those they considered marginal, unworthy, and sinful.
They were the unwanted and undeserving leftovers of their religious society.
These leftovers, however, were precious to Jesus.
Jesus called them the last, the lost, and the least, who in his kingdom are now the first, the found, and the greatest (Matthew 25:40, 45; Luke 9:48; Luke 19:10).
Let's take a moment and look around the Lord's Table that we now share.
Why not?
Have you ever wondered why the people who crowded around Jesus in his day are not the people we generally see in our communion services?
Why the connection between Jesus and "the leftovers" and the disconnect between them and our churches?
After all, when we take The Supper, aren't we recognizing that we are formed by grace into his bodily presence in the word? Paul said it this way:
“Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake of the one bread” (1 Corinthians 10:17 ESV).
When we read the story of Jesus, he repeatedly placed himself at a meal with these people. Do we?
Do we invite our lost friends to share The Table with Jesus like Levi invited his friends?
As we share in this bread and wine today, we want them to call us to something beyond bread and wine.
We want this meal to call us into the lives of the last, the lost, and the least.
We want our next celebration of this simple feast to be a celebration of Jesus' redeeming love for leftovers and loose lugs.
Why?
We want our next celebration of this simple feast to be a celebration of Jesus' redeeming love for leftovers and loose lugs.
Because we've been sent to reach and include the same folks at his Table in our day as he did in his day (Luke 19:10; John 20:21).
The Lord wants his eternal banquet to be filled with people such as these:
“When one of those who reclined at table with him heard these things, he said to him, ‘Blessed is everyone who will eat bread in the kingdom of God!’
“But he said to him, ‘A man once gave a great banquet and invited many. And at the time for the banquet he sent his servant to say to those who had been invited, “Come, for everything is now ready.”
“But they all alike began to make excuses. ... So the servant came and reported these things to his master. Then the master of the house became angry and said to his servant, 'Go out quickly to the streets and lanes of the city, and bring in the poor and crippled and blind and lame.'
“And the servant said, 'Sir, what you commanded has been done, and still there is room.'
“And the master said to the servant, 'Go out to the highways and hedges and compel people to come in, that my house may be filled'" (Luke 14:15-23 ESV).
The Lord wants his banquet hall to be filled with the last, lost, and least of us and our friends!
Prayer for the Bread:
Almighty God who became human flesh in Jesus, we recognize that as we share this bread, we are Jesus' body — his physical presence in the world.
We know he gave his body, enduring suffering and death so that your banquet hall of grace would be filled.
We now ask that you awaken us and convict us of our need to be your Son's presence in our world so that the last, the least, and the lost will want to join us at his Table of grace. In Jesus' name, we pray.
Amen.
Prayer for the Cup:
Loving Father, we know that Jesus purchased the church — all of us, his followers — at the cost of his own blood.
We now stand before you clean and pure at his expense and because of his gracious love.
Thank you for making such a gift possible for all of us who in our heart of hearts know that we are part of the last, the least, and the lost.
Because of his intercession and grace, we pray in Jesus' name. Amen.

THE SILENT CONSTRUCTION OF SOLOMON’S TEMPLE - In order to erect the magnificent temple of Solomon, every portion was so carefully fabricated, far away from the construction site, that the building could be completely erected in reverent silence. Here is a remarkable testimony to the engineering and construction skills of the ancients. The stones were not small and rough. "They brought great stones, costly stones, and hewed stones, to lay the foundation of the house" They were quarried from limestone beds beneath the city and had to be fabricated and brought to the temple site, all ready to be laid in place. In both its unique beauty and its silent assemblage, the temple is a striking type of the spiritual temple now being erected by the Holy Spirit. In this spiritual temple, each new believer is a costly stone, carefully cut from the world's dark quarry, then silently placed in the growing structure by the Holy Spirit on the foundation of Jesus Christ.

"And the house, when it was in building, was built of stone made ready before it was brought thither: so that there was neither hammer nor axe nor any tool of iron heard in the house, while it was in building." (1 Kings 6:7)

Image result for images temple 1 kings 5:17Here is a remarkable testimony to the engineering and construction skills of the ancients.
In order to erect the magnificent temple of Solomon, every portion was so carefully fabricated, far away from the construction site, that the building could be completely erected in reverent silence.
Furthermore, the stones were not small and rough. "They brought great stones, costly stones, and hewed stones, to lay the foundation of the house" (1 Kings 5:17).
They were quarried from limestone beds beneath the city and had to be fabricated and brought to the temple site, all ready to be laid in place.
"And Solomon's builders and Hiram's builders did hew them, and the stonesquarers" (1 Kings 5:18).
In both its unique beauty and its silent assemblage, the temple is a striking type of the spiritual temple now being erected by the Holy Spirit.
"Now therefore ye are . . . built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord; In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit" (Ephesians 2:19-22).
Image result for images temple 1 kings 5:17In this spiritual temple, each new believer is a costly stone, carefully cut from the world's dark quarry, then silently placed in the growing structure by the Holy Spirit on the foundation of Jesus Christ, "to whom coming, as unto a living stone, disallowed indeed of men, but chosen of God, and precious, Ye also, as lively stones, are built up a spiritual house" (1 Peter 2:4-5).
"Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?" (1 Corinthians 3:16).
