CONFRONTING YOUR GIANTS - Whenever the Lord gives us a great “territory” to take, there will always appear to be insurmountable obstacles in the way. The problems we face may be bigger than us. But they definitely aren’t bigger than our Lord! Financial concerns… struggles in your family… a problem with your health or emotions… or fear of failure? Whatever your giant may be, you can overcome it. Be bold - no matter what kind of giant you may be facing, victory can be yours in Jesus’ name - God desires to bring His people into the Promised Land. He instructed Moses to send 12 spies to view the land. After 40 days, the spies returned and brought a mixed report. The first 10 spies reported that God had indeed given them a wonderful land of “milk and honey” and abundant crops. But they saw no way the Israelites could actually possess such a land, for it was inhabited by strong enemies and impregnable fortresses. You’ve heard about a fantastic place of victory and abundance that God has prepared for you, but the obstacles seem too great… the enemies too intimidating… the cost too high. Caleb and Joshua gave the people a much different report, which unfortunately was disregarded by the cowardly and unbelieving spies. God’s people were at the very brink of the Promised Land. They were poised to enter into their destiny. Yet they allowed fear and disobedience to keep them in the wilderness for 40 more years!

by Ben Cerullo

Numbers chapters 13 and 14 tell a sobering story of God’s desire to bring His people into the Promised Land.

He instructed Moses to send 12 spies to view the land before the rest of the Israelites entered it.

After 40 days, the spies returned and brought a mixed report:

“We went to the land where you sent us. It truly flows with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. Nevertheless the people who dwell in the land are strong; the cities are fortified and very large… There we saw the giants…and we were like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight” (Numbers 13:27-28, 33).

The first 10 spies reported that God had indeed given them a wonderful land of “milk and honey” and abundant crops.

But they saw no way the Israelites could actually possess such a land, for it was inhabited by strong enemies and impregnable fortresses.

Does this sound a lot like your life today?

You’ve heard about a fantastic place of victory and abundance that God has prepared for you, but the obstacles seem too great… the enemies too intimidating… the cost too high.

Caleb and Joshua gave the people a much different report, which unfortunately was disregarded by the cowardly and unbelieving spies:

“Then Caleb quieted the people before Moses, and said, ‘Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it.’”

“But the men who had gone up with him said, ‘We are not able to go up against the people, for they are stronger than we.’ And they gave the children of Israel a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, ‘The land through which we have gone as spies is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people whom we saw in it are men of great stature’” (Numbers 13:30-32).

God’s people were at the very brink of the Promised Land.

They were poised to enter into their destiny.

Yet they allowed fear and disobedience to keep them in the wilderness for 40 more years!

What Went Wrong?

How could the 10 spies get things so wrong?

They gave a “bad report” because the obstacles to their destiny seemed like “giants.”

Is that how your problems look today – enormous and overwhelming?

The story of the 10 spies who brought back a fearful and negative report provides a sobering warning for us today.

Instead of cowering in fear and intimidation, we must aggressively take the battle to the enemy.

You see, whether in the physical or the spiritual realm, passivity and accommodation never bring victory in warfare.

Jesus repeatedly spoke of the need to be on the offensive against the enemy: “From the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and the violent take it by force” (Matthew 11:12).

Remember: You will never “take ground” from the enemy or reach your destiny without a fight!

Checking Your Vision

The 10 cowardly spies had a “vision” problem.

They saw the obstacles (the so-called “giants”) as BIG and God as SMALL.

Do you see how foolish that perspective is? It will always rob us of obeying God and pursuing the dreams He has given us.

Whenever the Lord gives us a great “territory” to take, there will always appear to be insurmountable obstacles in the way.

Unless we clearly see God as BIG and the problems, in comparison, as SMALL, we will inevitably draw back and remain in the wilderness.

Unless we see God correctly… we won’t have faith.

Unless we have faith… we won’t be able to obey.

Without faith and obedience… we won’t be able to do battle and enter into the destiny God has for us (Hebrews chapters 3 and 4).

Notice that when the Israelites saw God incorrectly, they saw themselves incorrectly as well.

The 10 fainthearted spies saw themselves and their countrymen as mere “grasshoppers” in comparison to the enemy “giants” in the Promised Land.

Just two of the spies, Joshua and Caleb, saw God instead.

What do you see when you look around you today?

Lots of believers are still locked in the “Grasshopper Syndrome,” failing to see who they are in Christ.

Sure, the problems we face may be bigger than us. But they definitely aren’t bigger than our Lord!

What’s Holding You Back?

Friend, is there a “giant” that has been keeping you out of your Promised Land God’s place of blessing and destiny for your life?

As you consider your life’s purpose and mission, is there something that is holding you back from truly entering in?

Financial concerns… struggles in your family… a problem with your health or emotions… or fear of failure?

Whatever your giant may be, you can overcome it in the same way David defeated Goliath.

The young shepherd boy faced a giant who was nearly 10 feet tall probably almost twice his size.

Yet David’s eyes weren’t on the size of his enemy, but rather on the size of his God!

No wonder David could have such audacious faith. His confidence was in the strength of the Lord, not in his own strength.

When taunted by his massive enemy, he fearlessly replied: “The battle is the Lord’s, and He will give you into our hands” (1 Samuel 17:45-47).

Be bold, my friend. No matter what kind of giant you may be facing, victory can be yours in Jesus’ name!

FIGHT ON THE HIDDEN BATTLEFIELD -- AND WIN! - Most of the battles we face are won or lost in the spiritual realm -- on a hidden battlefield where we wage war in our prayer closets. If there a spiritual Goliath facing you today remember where the battlefield lies, hidden – in your prayer life! Stand strong and firm in devoted prayer... and the victory will be won – fight on the spiritual battlefield, where the greatest victory of all, Jesus’ own triumph on the cross, has already prepared the way for yours - “But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.” - Have you ever heard of the Valley of Elah? It's the valley near Bet Shemesh where David defeated Goliath, yet this historic battlefield is virtually untouched in Israel. During the rainy season a brook runs through the midst of the valley, however it dries up during the summer. This brook is the one from which David chose his five smooth stones – one of which was used to kill Goliath. Yet, this historic place has no landmarks, no churches – people drive past it all the time unaware of its biblical or historic significance. The present "invisibility" of this battlefield causes me to reflect on the fact that David's battle with Goliath was also won in an "invisible" place... the place of David's faith. “But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.” - 1 Peter 4:7

Have you ever heard of the Valley of Elah?

It's the valley near Bet Shemesh where David defeated Goliath, yet this historic battlefield is virtually untouched in Israel.

During the rainy season a brook runs through the midst of the valley, however it dries up during the summer.

This brook is very likely the one from which David chose his five smooth stones – one of which was used to kill Goliath.

Yet, this historic place has no landmarks, no churches – people drive past it all the time unaware of its biblical or historic significance.

The present "invisibility" of this battlefield causes me to reflect on the fact that David's battle with Goliath was also won in an "invisible" place... the place of David's faith.

Isn't it true, most of the battles we face are won or lost in the spiritual realm -- on a hidden battlefield where we wage war in our prayer closets?

Spiritual victories in our prayer closets won't necessarily result in monuments marking them, but those victories will be well remembered in Heaven, and will leave dynamic memorials of faith in our hearts!

Is there a spiritual Goliath facing you today?

If so, remember where the battlefield lies, hidden – in your prayer life!

Stand strong and firm in devoted prayer... and the victory will be won – fight on the spiritual battlefield, where the greatest victory of all, Yeshua's own triumph on the cross, has already prepared the way for yours!

GOD DOES BIG THINGS WITH SMALL DEEDS - "Do not despise these small beginnings, for the LORD rejoices to see the work begin" - Begin. Just begin! What seems small to you might be huge to someone else. Just ask Bohn Fawkes. During World War II, he piloted a B-17. On one mission he sustained flak from Nazi antiaircraft guns. Even though his gas tanks were hit, the plane did not explode, and Fawkes was able to land the plane. Fawkes asked his crew chief for the German shell. He wanted to keep a souvenir of his incredible good fortune. The crew chief explained that eleven shells had been found in the gas tanks, none of which had exploded. Technicians opened the missiles and found them void of explosive charge. They were clean and harmless and with one exception, empty. The exception contained a carefully rolled piece of paper. On it a message had been scrawled in the Czech language. Translated, the note read: "This is all we can do for you now." A courageous assembly-line worker scribbled the note. He couldn't end the war, but he could save one plane. He couldn't do everything, but he could do something. So, he did it. God does big things with small deeds. And in contrast with sophisticated priests and powerful Roman rulers, a cross-suspended carpenter seemed nothing but a waste of life. Power to change history. In the hands of God, small seeds grow into sheltering trees. Tiny leaven expands into nourishing loaves. Small deeds can change the world.

"Do not despise these small beginnings, for the LORD rejoices to see the work begin" (Zechariah 4:10 NLT).

Begin. Just begin!
What seems small to you might be huge to someone else.
Mission Completed by Robert Taylor (B-17)Just ask Bohn Fawkes. During World War II, he piloted a B-17.
On one mission he sustained flak from Nazi antiaircraft guns. Even though his gas tanks were hit, the plane did not explode, and Fawkes was able to land the plane.
On the morning following the raid, Fawkes asked his crew chief for the German shell. He wanted to keep a souvenir of his incredible good fortune.
Out of Fuel and Safely Home by Robert Taylor (B-17 & P-51)The crew chief explained that not just one but eleven shells had been found in the gas tanks, none of which had exploded.
Technicians opened the missiles and found them void of explosive charge. They were clean and harmless and with one exception, empty.
The exception contained a carefully rolled piece of paper. On it a message had been scrawled in the Czech language.
Translated, the note read: "This is all we can do for you now."
A courageous assembly-line worker was disarming bombs and scribbled the note.
He couldn't end the war, but he could save one plane. He couldn't do everything, but he could do something. So, he did it.
God does big things with small deeds.
Against a towering giant, a brook pebble seems futile. But God used it to topple Goliath.
Compared to the tithes of the wealthy, a widow's coins seem puny. But Jesus used them to inspire us.
And in contrast with sophisticated priests and powerful Roman rulers, a cross-suspended carpenter seemed nothing but a waste of life.
Few Jewish leaders mourned his death. Only a handful of friends buried his body. The people turned their attention back to the temple. Why not?
What power does a buried rabbi have? We know the answer.
Mustard-seed and leaven-lump power. Power to tear away death rags and push away death rocks.
Power to change history. In the hands of God, small seeds grow into sheltering trees. Tiny leaven expands into nourishing loaves.
Small deeds can change the world.
Sow the mustard seed. Bury the leaven lump. Make the call. Write the check. Organize the committee.
Moses had a staff.
David had a sling.
Samson had a jawbone.
Rahab had a string.
Mary had some ointment.
Aaron had a rod.
Dorcas had a needle.
All were used by God.
What do you have?
God inhabits the tiny seed, empowers the tiny deed.
He cures the common life by giving no common life, by offering no common gifts.
Don't discount the smallness of your deeds.

CRAZY GOD-FAITH - This faith, works by love, which is passionate, fiery, and at times, a little crazy - Aggressive God-Faith is not for academics. They are too passive and indifferent for that. For them the things of God are an intellectual exercise – just something else to put down on paper. Paul says that the ‘merely intellectual person’ cannot know the things of the Spirit of God, for they are spiritually discerned. God is a spirit, and He put His Spirit into us so that we would have the power to overcome the world. Most theology is all talk and no action. Faith is relational and active. Faith takes a stand and does something. This kind doesn’t trust and try. It trusts and does. The God kind of faith doesn’t just try the things of God; it walks out in the open with nothing but the things of God. Those who trusted their God staked everything on Him. They were all in! Faith begins where the will of God is known. You have to know before you can go, and you have to know before you can do.

I love Bible doctrine, but most theology is all talk and no action.
Faith is relational and active. Faith takes a stand and does something.
Okay, so you can quote a bunch of obscure Old Testament verses, and you can throw out some pithy Bible statements.
Great, but can you cast out demons?
Can you heal the sick?
Will you go to the dangerous hard places?
Does your heart burn to turn the world right side up?
Does any of that even make sense to you?
