RADICAL SURRENDER - One Foot in Front of the Other - As Christian parents, sometimes we’re afraid to be completely vulnerable about our fear and pain when it comes to our children. Sometimes it’s even harder to acknowledge that it’s really up to God to direct our child’s next steps. As parents, we all experience times of frustration, confusion and loss. But if we can trust that there is Something Bigger guiding the way, we can do amazingly tough things. Because then it isn’t up to us. It’s up to Him. And what incredible hope we have in that surrender. What incredible hope we have for the journey ahead.

Radical Surrender

“LORD, I know that people’s lives are not their own; it is not for them to direct their steps.” Jeremiah 10:23 (NIV)

She stood in front of the church, holding on to her two babies for dear life. It was supposed to be one of the most beautiful moments of her life.
But it was the most beautifully terrible moment she could ever imagine.
My friend Rachel ached to be a mother. Having suffered two devastating, later-term miscarriages, she walked this world heavy with grief.
When the state caseworker asked to place infant siblings with her, she believed God was replacing her load with joy.
God had seen her, and He had redeemed her pain with these two precious children.
She completely reorganized her life to parent them. She quit her job. She decorated their nurseries.
She battled fatigue and met the needs of two babies that had experienced more trauma in their short little lives than Rachel ever had.
For two years, it looked like she would get to be their mother permanently, as it seemed unlikely their birth mother would regain custody.
Rachel and her husband were the first choice as an adoptive family. They were so close to having the family they had dreamed of, until the caseworker called and said they were returning to court.
“The birth mother has sustained sobriety and wants her kids back. Her attorney is fighting for it, and the judge is favorable. You should prepare yourselves that the children will be returned home.”
Home? Weren’t these children already home? Wasn’t she the one who had snuggled them, fed them … a stable, nurturing woman who would raise them in the ways of Jesus?
Wasn’t she their mother?
And so, she stood in front of the congregation that day, holding her babies. A day so bright, so hopeful, but so awful.
Because it was Mother’s Day, and Rachel and her husband were dedicating these children to God as their parents — knowing that within the week, the caseworker would come to take them away.
Rachel knew it wasn’t for her to determine the steps of her children. But she also knew it wasn’t the caseworker’s path either.
As Jeremiah 10:23 says, “LORD, I know that people’s lives are not their own; it is not for them to direct their steps.
It was for God to direct her children’s path.
Rachel and her husband became forever parents to their children the minute they accepted the assignment from the Lord to parent them.
But they also knew their children weren’t theirs but rather God’s. So, they dedicated them back to God, even though their hearts were breaking. Even though they couldn’t see the end of their family’s journey.
What an incredible act of faith.
What an incredible act of surrender.
Have you ever had to radically surrender your children to the Lord?
Perhaps there was a scary diagnosis. You could be a frustrated stepparent, or perhaps there’s been a long season of miscommunication with a child.
As Christian parents, sometimes we’re afraid to be completely vulnerable about our fear and pain when it comes to our children.
We can trust that He is leading us somewhere good, even in our moments of deepest ache and loss.
Lord, I’m so thankful that You are the Something Bigger who gives me the grace and strength to face hard times as a parent. I trust in Your overwhelming love for me and my children. I trust in You to direct our next steps. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.

NO ONE IS IMMUNE TO TEMPTATION - The Lord tells us to rejoice when we fall into various trials because we are experiencing something unique. Temptation only happens to maturing Christians. Only true children of God can be tempted — sinners cannot. Temptation is not a sign of weakness or a leaning toward the world. Rather, it is a sign that God trusts us.

No One Is Immune To Temptation
GOD WANTS COMBAT-SEASONED WARRIORS
David Wilkerson

Temptation is an invitation or an enticement to commit an immoral act.
Right now, Satan is raging over the earth as a roaring lion trying to entice Christians toward immorality.
No one is immune and the closer to God you get, the more Satan will desire to sift you.
“My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations” (James 1:2, KJV).
The Lord tells us to rejoice when we fall into various trials because we are experiencing something unique.
Temptation is “training under combat conditions” and it only happens to maturing Christians.
God wants combat-seasoned warriors who can testify, “I was under fire! I’ve been in battle! The enemy was all around me, trying to kill me but God showed me how to take it all and not be afraid.”
Only true children of God can be tempted — sinners cannot.
Rain cannot touch a body already under water and sinners are already drowned in perdition.
As children of Satan, they do as he dictates and he teases them into deeper and darker pits of immorality.
Temptation is not a sign of weakness or a leaning toward the world.
Rather, it is a sign that God trusts us.
The Spirit led Jesus into the arena of temptation in the wilderness so that He could learn the secret of power over all temptation.
Actually, God was saying to Jesus, “My Son, I have given you the Spirit without measure and confirmed you before the world. Now I am going to permit Satan to tempt you so you will see how powerless he is. You will never once fear his dominion and you can go forth preaching the kingdom with faith that Satan is defeated and cannot touch you in any way.”
We are not tempted to teach us about ourselves or show off the power of the devil. No!
Temptation is allowed to teach us the limitation of Satan — to defang him and expose his weakness.
And to show the power of God to deliver!
Start glorifying the Lord and use your shield of faith against temptation in your life.

YOU CAN'T GET OUT OF HERE - An Oklahoma Ghost Story - He knew it was the devil, coming for him just like the preacher said, on account of him being the town drunk. The hole was very deep and inside it was pitch black. His eyes adjusted to the darkness after a few moments, and he made out a form sitting in the darkness with him. It called his name, and he scrambled away in fear, trying to climb out of that terrible grave. Then the figure spoke. "You can't get out," it said.

You Can't Get Out
An Oklahoma Ghost Story
retold by S. E. Schlosser

One dark, windy night, the town drunk was meandering his way home after the bar closed.
Somehow, he got turned around and ended up walking through the churchyard instead of taking the road home.
The wind picked up and he thought he could hear a voice calling his name.
Suddenly, the ground opened up in front of him, and he fell down, down into an open grave!
He could hear the voice clearer now, calling to him.
He knew it was the devil, coming for him just like the preacher said, on account of him being the town drunk.
The drunk gave a shout of pure terror and leapt straight up more than six feet. He caught the edge of the hole in his hands, scrambled out, and ran for home as fast as he could go.
Inside the open grave, his neighbor Charlie sighed in resignation. He'd fallen into the hole a few minutes before his friend and had thought that together they might help each other climb out.
Now he was going to have to wait until morning and get the mortician to bring him a ladder.

THE DIVINE VISITATION TO THE TEMPLE - When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, ‘Who is this?’1 The crowds answered, ‘This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.’ Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves. ’It is written,’ he said to them, ‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’ but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’

The Divine Visitation to the Temple

Prophecy: Malachi 3:1-6
“See, I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come,” says the LORD Almighty. But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner’s fire or a launderer’s soap.
3 He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then the LORD will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness,
4 and the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will be acceptable to the LORD, as in days gone by, as in former years.
5 “So I will come near to you for judgment. I will be quick to testify against sorcerers, adulterers and perjurers, against those who defraud laborers of their wages, who oppress the widows and the fatherless, and deprive aliens of justice, but do not fear me,” says the LORD Almighty.
6 “I the LORD do not change. So you, O descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.

Fulfillment: Matthew 21:10-13
10 When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred and asked, ‘Who is this?’
11 The crowds answered, ‘This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee.’
12 Jesus entered the temple courts and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves.
13 ’It is written,’ he said to them, ‘My house will be called a house of prayer,’ but you are making it ‘a den of robbers.’”

TRUSTING GOD'S MAPS - When we hear a call from God to do something, step out in faith and be obedient. Believe that God will be with us every step of the way. We don’t need to know every bend and twist in the road — simply trust Him as Savior and guide. Trust in God’s timing. Trust in God’s plans. God is also teaching us we shouldn’t make a list of all the reasons we think God made a mistake in choosing us. God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things. Listen. Leap one step at a time. Trust Him completely. God’s loving, non-digital voice will guide us through the traffic, over the bridges, and around each turn on this journey called Obedience.

Trusting God's Maps
Karen Tyner

"Turn right in 500 feet."
"Recalculating."
"Your destination is on the right."
I use a GPS device as a map, especially when traveling to a new place.
After I type in the address, the female voice starts navigating.
Of course, she first guides me down the driveway, then through my neighborhood, then out of the city. She starts one turn at a time.
I blindly trust the digital navigator to help me reach my destination safely and on time.
Why can’t I be that way with God?
I want God to show me His mapped-out plans for me in advance before I back the car out of the driveway and proceed on this adventure called life.
I must admit, sometimes I trust my GPS more than I trust God’s plans for me.
I don’t question the digital navigator, just God.
I don’t need to know which roads the GPS will take me on, but I want to know all the turns in advance from God.
Negotiate with the GPS? Rarely. Negotiate with God? Oh yes!
The Lord says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life, I will advise you and watch over you.” Psalm 32:8 (NLT)
“You can make many plans, But the Lord’s purpose will prevail.” Proverbs 19:21(NLT)
I read these and other verses; and I get it — God’s ways, plans, and thoughts for me are better than anything I could dream up.
But my brain just wants a little peek at the path God is taking me on. Okay, more than a little peek. I want to know every detail. Especially the ending.
In the Bible, we learn of two great men: Moses and Abraham. God gave each man an assignment, but their reactions to God’s requests were different.
God asked Moses to return to Egypt and free the Israelites. But Moses said he was inadequate so he asked God to send someone else (Exodus 4:1-17).
On the other hand, Abraham didn’t hesitate in responding to God’s command to sacrifice his son, Isaac. (Genesis 22).
Moses tried to negotiate with God, but Abraham did not.
I’m more like Moses — send someone else unless you can show me all the obstacles I’ll face and promise me there will be a happy ending.
I want to be more like Abraham. Listen, trust, obey.
What do we learn from these two men? Trust in God’s timing. Trust in God’s plans.
When we hear a call from God to do something, step out in faith and be obedient. Believe that God will be with us every step of the way.
We don’t need to know every bend and twist in the road — simply trust Him as Savior and guide.
God is also teaching us we shouldn’t make a list of all the reasons we think God made a mistake in choosing us.
Remember, God uses ordinary people to do extraordinary things. He chooses us because of our gifts and passions.
He wants those things to be used for His Kingdom, not kept locked inside our comfortable living room.
Listen. Leap one step at a time. Trust Him completely.
God’s loving, non-digital voice will guide us through the traffic, over the bridges, and around each turn on this journey called Obedience.
