“There are ‘friends’ who
pretend to be friends, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” Proverbs 18:24 Living Bible (TLB)
Proverbs 18:24 Meaning of Verse with Simple Commentary
Proverbs 18:24 - “One who has unreliable friends soon
comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.”
Explanation and Commentary on Proverbs 18:24
Those who we call
friends are those we trust and those we can run to for help.
Choosing the kind
of friends we want is necessary because the friends we have will determine the
kind of life we will have.
You are the average
of your five closest friends.
Friends that are
unreliable and are not doing the right thing will one day get into trouble and
it will affect you.
Psalm 1:1 - “Blessed is the one who does not walk in
step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the
company of mockers.”
This also means
that anyone who does not take ungodly people as friends is blessed. Such a
person would be free of ruin.
Whenever there are
troubles, those who keep unreliable friends will face the consequences. This is
the reason why we need to filter the kinds of friends we keep.
The second part of Proverbs 18:24 says “but there is a friend
who sticks closer than a brother.”
This is the real
friend who never leaves us. This friend sticks closer to you than even your own
family.
This friend will
sacrifice things for our sake. He has done it before and he will continue to do
it. This friend is Jesus.
We are not the ones
who begged to be His friends – going by our works and behavior, we are not
qualified to be His friend.
Jesus called you to
be His friend, and He was ready to sacrifice Himself for you out of love.
John 15:15 - “I no longer call you servants, because a
servant does not know his master’s business. Instead, I have called you
friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to
you.”
